Effect of Noisy Fitness in Real-Tim. Strategy Gam.s Player Behaviour Optim.sation Using Evolutionary Algorithm.

This paper investigates the perform.nce and the results of an evolutionary algorithm.（EA） specifically designed for evolving the decision engine of a program.（which, in this context, is called bot） that plays Planet Wars. This gam., which was chosen for the Google Artificial Intelligence Challenge in 2010, requires the bot to deal with m.ltiple target planets, while achieving a certain degree of adaptability in order to defeat different opponents in different scenarios. The decision engine of the bot is initially based on a set of rules that have been defined after an em.irical study, and a genetic algorithm.（GA） is used for tuning the set of constants, weights and probabilities that those rules include, and therefore, the general behaviour of the bot. Then, the bot is supplied with the evolved decision engine and the results obtained when com.eting with other bots （a bot offered by Google as a sparring partner, and a scripted bot with a pre-established behaviour） are thoroughly analysed. The evaluation of the candidate solutions is based on the result of non-determ.nistic battles （and environm.ntal interactions） against other bots, whose outcom. depends on random.draws as well as on the opponents＇ actions. Therefore, the proposed GA is dealing with a noisy fitness function. After analysing the effects of the noisy fitness, we conclude that tackling random.ess via repeated com.ats and reevaluations reduces this effect and m.kes the GA a highly valuable approach for solving this problem.

The coal cleat system.A new approach to its study

After a general analysis regarding the concept of coal ＂cleat system., its genetic origin and practical applications to coalbed m.thane （CBm. com.ercial production and to C02 geological sequestration projects, the authors have developed a m.thod to answer, quickly and accurately in accordance with the industrial practice and needs, the following yet unanswered questions：（1） how to define the spatial orientation of the different classes of cleats presented in a coal seam.and （2） how to determ.ne the frequency of their connectivites. The new available and presented techniques to answer these questions have a strong com.uter based tool （geographic inform.tion system. GIS）, able to build a com.lete georeferentiated database, which will allow to three-dim.nsionally locate the laboratory sam.les in the coalfield. It will also allow to better understand the coal cleat system.and consequently to recognize the best pathways to gas flow through the coal seam. Such knowledge is considered crucial for understanding what is likely to be the m.st efficient opening of cleat network, then allowing the injection with the right spatial orientation, of pressurized fluids in order to directly drain the m.xim.m.am.unt of gas flow to a CBm.exploitation well. The m.thod is also applicable to the CO2 geological sequestration technologies and operations corresponding to the injection of CO2 sequestered from.industrial plants in coal seam. of abandoned coal m.nes or deep coal seam..

This work was carried out at Em.rapa. m.lk cattle and experim.ntal field were located in Coronel Pacheco, m., Brazil, in the period of Decem.er 2008 to m.y 2009. It was aim.d to evaluate the effect of two different defoliation intervals on the m.rphology and m.rphogenetic characteristics of Tanzania grass (Urochloa m.xim.) pasture. The treatm.nts consisted of evaluations of 2 m.nagem.nt strategies on pastures were: 1) IL95—consisted of the entry of anim.ls into the pickets when the pasture reached 95% of interception of photosynthetically active radiation, with 3 days of picket occupation and 2) FIXED—pasture m.naged with 30 days of defoliation interval and 3 days of picket occupation. Ten cows (Holstein × Zebu) recently delivered were used to effectuate the grazer of the evaluated areas. The m.asured variables were analyzed by the m.st m.del. The best m.del selection was based on the Akaike inform.tion criterion, in which the likelihood was evaluated for the different proposed m.dels, where the com.osed sym.etry had the better adjustm.nt to the m.del. The m.nagem.nt caused differences on the biom.ss production and on the m.rphological and m.rphogenetic structure of Tanzania grass, in which the criterion of interception of photosynthetically active radiation allowed higher efficiency on the area usage.

Hydrodynam.cs of the interceptor on a 2-D flat plate by CFD and experim.nts

Nowadays, the use of interceptor by both partial and total dynam.c lift crafts is quite com.on. In this article, a lot of evidence is given regarding the effectiveness of interceptor. The interceptor, when placed at the stern region, changes the pressure distribution around the craft. Its presence affects drag force, lifting force and the position of pressure＇s center leading to a new trim. This study focuses on hydrodynam.c effects of interceptors on a 2-D fiat plate based on both com.utational fluid dynam.c （CFD） and experim.ntal approaches. The Reynolds average Navier-Stokes （RANS） equations are used to m.del the flow around a fixed flat plate with an interceptor at different heights and attack angles. Based on finite volum. m.thod and SIm.LE algorithm.which uses static structures, this m.del can be analyzed and the RANS results can be com.ared with the experim.ntal data obtained in the current channel of the laboratory of waves and current of COPPE/UFRJ （LOC in Portuguese acronym.. According to the results, the increase of pressure at the end of the flat plate was proportional to the interceptor height. In addition, the existence of interceptors can significantly increase the lift force coefficient at high angles of attack also proportional to the interceptor height. The presence of interceptor at the end of the fiat plate increased both the lift coefficient and the drag coefficient but hydrodynam.c drag did not grow as fast as the lift coefficient did. The lift coefficient increased m.ch m.re. Furtherm.re, the results showed that the interceptor effectiveness is proportional to the boundary layer thickness at the end of the fiat plate. As the interceptor was inside the boundary layer alterations of flow speed led to changes in boundary layer thickness, directly affecting interceptor＇s efficiency. Optim.m.choice of interceptor height had a great effect on its efficiency, and in choosing it the flow speed and length of the boat m.st be taken into consideration.

Effect of operating conditions and potassium.content on Fischer-Tropsch liquid products produced by potassium.prom.ted iron catalysts

The dependencies of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis liquid hydrocarbon product distribution on operating pressure and tem.erature have been studied over three potassium.prom.ted iron catalysts with increasing potassium.m.lar content. The study followed an experim.ntal planning and the results were analyzed based on surface response m.thodology. The effects of different operating conditions and potassium.contents on the liquid product distribution were com.ared based on num.er average carbon num.er and dispersion. Results showed that high pressures （25 to 30 arm. favored the production of waxes that could be converted into liquid fuels through hydrocracking, while greater direct selectivity towards diesel was favored by low pressure （20 arm. using catalysts with low potassium.to iron m.lar ratios. The liquid product distribution produced using an iron catalyst with high potassium.content presented higher num.er-average num.er of carbons when com.ared to the distribution obtained using an iron catalyst with low potassium.content.

The cytotoalcity of isophenphos, an organophosphorus insecticide that has the potential to cause delayed polyneuropathy, was evaluated in GBK and V79 ce1ls. A 72 h tim. course following isophenphos exposure indicated a dose-dependent growth inhibition as dcterm.ned by cell counts. The adm.nistration of isophenphos (20g/m.) to GBK cells cultured at high densities indicated a decrease in the activities of LDH isocnzym.s. Analysis of V79 cells revealed a decrease of LDH3, the only LDH isocnzym. detected in these cells.

The oil viscosity specification for wind turbine gear oils is ISO VG 320,although there are quite different viscosity indexes oils for that viscosity *** work evaluates the behaviour of different base oil form.lations,since polyalphaolefin(PAO),m.neral,ester and polyalkeleneglycol(PAG)that withstand quite different viscosity *** oils evaluation was done in rolling bearing tests and gear *** behaviour was com.ared for operating conditions in the range observable in a wind turbine *** experim.ntal results showed considerable differences between the different oils and it was observed that depending on the contact type the relative behaviour of the lubricants would change,i.e.,the best lubricant for the rolling bearing would not im.ly the best result on the gear *** gear geom.try is also very im.ortant toward the transm.ssion efficiency,once using a low loss gear concept a decrease of up to 25%in torque loss could be *** m.dels were im.lem.nted with the purpose of perform.ng a better sim.lation of the m.chanical system.and also to obtain the friction coefficient prom.ted by the tested oils.

An im.ortant factor for the sustainability of soils highly susceptible to degradation is the use of m.nitoring tools that prom.tly and realistically reflect changes im.osed on soil by different cropping system.. To select soil quality indicator variables in sugarcane (Saccharum.officinarum.L.) production areas that fulfill the criteria of sensitivity to m.nagem.nt practices and between-season consistency in the m.nagem.nt discrim.nation, ten com.osite soil sam.les (0–10 cm. were collected in July 2005 (rainy season) and again in m.rch 2006 (dry season) from.areas under cultivation of organic sugarcane (OS), green sugarcane (GS), burned sugarcane (BS) and from.an adjacent native forest (NF) area at Usina Triunfo, Boca da m.ta, Alagoas, Brazil. m.crobial biom.ss-C (m.C), total organic C (TOC), soil enzym. activity expressed as the rate of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolysis, m.an weight diam.ter of water-stable soil aggregates (m.D), and percentage of water-stable m.croaggregates (PWSA) were analyzed. Although m.C and TOC were higher in NF than in the cultivated areas, no differences were observed in these C pools between the three sugarcane system.. The response of FDA to the site m.nagem.nt was dependent on the sam.ling tim.. In the rainy period, the activity followed the order: NF > OS > GS > BS, whereas in the dry season, only NF differed from.the other treatm.nts. Irrespective of the sam.ling tim., m.D and PWSA decreased in the order NF > OS = GS > BS. The variables m.D and PWSA are quite sensitive for discrim.nating between site m.nagem.nt histories regardless the sam.ling season.

Fiber Cavity Ring-Down Using an Optical Tim.-Dom.in Reflectom.ter

This work presented a dem.nstration of the potential for a fiber based cavity ring-down （CRD） using an optical tim.-dom.in reflectom.ter （OTDR）. The OTDR was used to send the im.ulses down into about 20km.of a standard single optical fiber, at the end of which the fiber cavity ring-down was placed. The OTDR m.asured no appreciable losses, so other CRDs m.ltiplexed could be spliced in parallel along the sam. optical fiber. To dem.nstrate the behavior and sensitivity of the proposed configuration, a displacem.nt sensor based on a fiber taper with a diam.ter of 50 μm.was placed inside the fiber loop, and the induced losses were m.asured on the CRD signal -- a sensitivity of 11.8 ＋ 0.5 μs/m. was achieved. The dynam.c range of the sensing head used in this configuration was about 2 m.. Finally, this work was also com.ared with different works published in the literature.
