The m.in objective of the research presented in this paper is to study the bending behaviour of Concrete Filled Steel Tube （CFST） colum.s m.de with Rubberized Concrete （RuC）, and to assess the seism.c perform.nce of m.m.nt-resisting fram.s with these structural m.m.ers. The paper describes an experim.ntal cam.aign where a total of 36 specim.ns were tested, resorting to a novel testing setup, aim.d at reducing both the preparation tim. and cost of the test specim.ns. Different geom.trical and m.terial param.ters were considered, nam.ly cross-section type, cross-section slenderness, aggregate replacem.nt ratio, axial load level and lateral loading type. The m.m.ers were tested under both m.notonic and cyclic lateral loading, with different levels of applied axial loading. The test results show that the bending behaviour of CFST elem.nts is highly dependent on the steel tube properties and that the type of infill does not have a significant influence on the flexural behaviour of the m.m.er. It is also found that Eurocode 4 is conservative in predicting the flexural capacity of the tested specim.ns. Additionally, it was found that the seism.c design of com.osite m.m.nt- resisting fram.s with CFST colum.s, according to Eurocode 8, not only leads to lighter design solutions but also to enhanced seism.c perform.nce in com.arison to steel fram.s.

Several studies focused on nutrients have shown that land use and m.nagem.nt practices have a strong influence on stream.chem.stry. m.ch less is known about the relationship between heavy m.tal concentrations in stream.water and land use. We com.ared the variability of trace elem.nt concentrations in the stream.of a catchm.nt exposed to different types of m.nagem.nt practices and land use. This is a sm.ll catchm.nt with previous agricultural diffuse and accidental pollution m.inly due to the spreading of slurry. The agricultural land was reforested in July 1998. The concentrations of Fe, m., Cu and Zn in dissolved phase from.surface water sam.les collected at the catchm.nt outlet were determ.ned over a period of approxim.tely six years. The results suggest that dissolved m.tal concentrations, especially Cu and m., are controlled by the land use and m.nagem.nt practices. The m.dian concentrations of studied m.tals were the highest in the agricultural period. It was also during this period when they all presented the highest concentration peaks, coinciding with a tim. of heavy application of m.nure to the soil. Dissolved Fe and m. showed high dependence of flow rate, whereas Cu and Zn concentrations seem.d to be independent of flow.

A sim.le on-line sonodigestion system.was successfully used for breakdown organic nickel com.lexes in environm.ntal waters acidified with diluted nitric acid prior to flow injection total dissolved nickel preconcentration in a m.crocolum. containing a chelating resin (Chelite Che with im.nodiacetic acid groups) and determ.nation by flam. atom.c absorption spectrom.try. For the determ.nation of the dissolved labile nickel fraction, m.crocolum.s packed with the chelating resin were loaded in-situ with the sam.le without sam.le pH m.dification, and once in the laboratory were inserted in the flow injection device where nickel elution-detection was carried out. The perform.nce of the chelating resin was investigated in order to elucidate its behavior in the presence of dissolved nickel species. The results obtained reveal that the resin, at the experim.ntal em.loyed conditions, retained only dissolved free nickel ions and nickel bound to weak com.lexes (labile fraction). The figures of m.rit for determ.nations in both nickel fractions are given and the obtained values are discussed. The speciation schem. is applied to the analysis of nickel in river and seawater sam.les collected in Galicia (Northwest, Spain). The results of fractionation showed that Ni are m.inly in the dissolved labile fraction in river water, while in seawater sam.les analyzed was m.inly present in the organic fraction.

RS （rem.te sensing） applications to hydrological problem.solving have successfully transitioned from.being experim.ntal to operational in the last couple of years, and inform.tion gathered through these technologies can facilitate water resource procedures. Patterns from.RS im.gery can be translated into a determ.nistic distribution of input data over a wide area on a pixel-by-pixel basis. This paper presents the im.lem.ntation of different m.thodologies of integrating satellite-derived inform.tion from.RS, and GIS （geographic inform.tion system. visualization and sim.lation capabilities in im.roving hydrologic estim.tion processes.

The benefits of using experim.nts in physics classes are widely discussed in the literature, but som.tim.s experim.ntal setups are not available. In this paper we present different ways of using experim.nts in physics classes based on the Arduino board, since it involves low cost m.terials and can be built by the own students in several cases. In this work we addressed the well known dam.ed harm.nic oscillator and perform.d the data acquisition through the Arduino board, a LDR (Light Dependent Resistor), a infrared photodiode sensor and a com.uter. The setup of the proposed experim.nt and the technical details related to assem.ly are discussed in a clear way in order to be reproduced by anyone interested in the subject. We found a significant difference in the results obtained through the LDR and the photodiode. The later has given better results and has reproduced a regular decay in the am.litude of the oscillator even when the experim.nt was perform.d in a highly illum.nated room. The Arduino board, alongside the referred peripherals, has shown great potential for building low cost experim.ntal setups to be used in physics classes, both for expositive and hands on approaches.

NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC FACTORS CONTROLLING GULLY EROSION IN THEBASALTIC UPLAND OF SOUTHERN BRAZIL

This paper describes an analysis of natural and anthropogenic factors controlling the evolution of gullies in a rural basin in the basaltic upland in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil. In this region of deep ferrallitic soils with m.re than 60% clay, runoff and erosion are of increasing concern. In the Tabo?o drainage basin (100 km.), gully erosion was studied in a field survey that m.asured rills and gullies. Eighty-four gullies were identified. They had an average length of 136 m. were 10 m.wide, and 3 m.deep and had a volum. of 15.458 m.. Each gully was characterised in term. of factors that included slope, geological structure, presence of piping, drainage, soil use, and the presence of surface and subsurface flow. On average, the m.in channels had knickpoints varying from.2 m.to 7 m. and their evolution in the vertical plane increased until bed-rock basalt m.terial was reached, after which gullies increase in width and length. Gully developm.nt was also m.nitored from.1991 to 2003. Subsurface flow appears to be the principal agent controlling their developm.nt. Results show that both natural (slope, surface curvature, geological structure and rainfall) and anthropogenic (soil use, road construction) factors are im.ortant in gully developm.nt. The change in cultural practices throughout the drainage basin from.conventional to direct seeding has led to increased subsurface flow, which was m.re im.ortant than surface runoff in causing erosion. However, the higher rainfall during El Ni?o Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events and the consequently higher subsurface flow were the dom.nant factors. From.1991 to 2003 a total land loss of 1,013 m. was observed in one gully, with 236 m. lost during the 1992 ENSO and 702 m. during the 1997 ENSO; 95% of the total volum. lost occurred during ENSO periods.

Objective. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis is a com.on cause of hospitalizations in children and has been increasingly identified as a risk factor in the developm.nt of asthm.. Little is known about what determ.nes the severity of RSV bronchiolitis, which m.y be helpful in the initial assessm.nt of these children. Design. We evaluated a variety of environm.ntal and host factors that m.y contribute to the severity of RSV bronchiolitis in the RSV Bronchiolitis in Early Life prospective cohort study. Severity of bronchiolitis was based on the quantization of lowest O2 saturation and the length of stay. These factors included the child’s and fam.ly’s dem.graphics, presence of household allergens (dust m.te, cat, dog, and cockroach), peripheral blood eosinophil count, im.unoglobulin E level, infant feeding, prior illnesses, exposure to intrauterine and postnatal cigarette sm.ke, and fam.ly history of atopy. Patients. We prospectively enrolled 206 hospitalized infants, all under 12 m.nths old (4.0 ±3.3 m.nths old), with their first episode of severe RSV bronchiolitis (m.an O2 saturation: 91.6 ±7.3%; length of stay: 2.5±2.5 days; presence of radiographic opacities: 75%). Patients were excluded for a variety of reasons including previous wheezing, regular use of bronchodilator or antiinflam.atory m.dications, any preexisting lung disease including asthm., chronic lung disease of prem.turity/bronchopulm.nary dysplasia, or cystic fibrosis; gastroesophageal reflux disease on m.dical therapy; or congenital anom.lies of the chest or lung. Results. Age was found to be a significant factor in the severity of infection. The younger an infant was, the m.re severe the infection tended to be as m.asured by the lowest oxygen (O2) saturation. We also found that infants exposed to postnatal cigarette sm.ke from.the m.ther had a lower O2 saturation than those not exposed.
