Genesis and Classification of Som. Soils of the River Nile Terraces: A Case Study of Khartoum.North, Sudan

Soils developed in the alluvium.terraces of the River Nile at Khartoum.North, Sudan was analyzed in an attem.t to classify it as well as to refer them.to their origin. Three river terraces com.rising nine profiles were selected to cover the physiographic positions. Lack of b.horizon and carb.nate accum.lation were m.in pedogenic processes in sub.urface horizons, whereas orhric epipedon was developed on top soil surface. The m.croscopic inspection of heavy sand m.neralogy indicated that the origin of the sand was the Ethiopian plateau. The m.st ab.ndant clay m.neral was sm.ctite, followed b. illite, kaolinite and chlorite. The presences of m.cas (illite) and chlorite in all studied soil sam.les m.ght em.hasize that these soils were young from.the pedological viewpoint and less weathered. The soils of the River Nile terraces at Khartoum.North were classified into: Typic Torrifluvents (1st terrace), Entic Haplocam.ids (2nd terrace) and Typic Haplocam.ids (3rd terrace). m.neralogy analysis indicated that the Entisols and Aridisols of the River Nile terraces in the study area had the sam. origin that of the igneous and m.tam.rphic rocks from.Ethiopian plateau.

A sim.le and reliab.e high perform.nce liquid chrom.tography tandem.m.ss spectrom.try (LC-m./m.) assay for the determ.nation of colistin A and colistin b.in hum.n plasm. was developed and validated. Clarithrom.cin was used as an internal standard (IS). Plasm. extraction was perform.d using C-18 cartridges and m.thanol containing 0.1% form.c acid. Analysis was perform.d using Atlantis dC18 (2.1 × 100 m., 3 μm. colum. at room.tem.erature and a m.b.le phase of 0.2% form.c acid in acetonitrile and water (50:50, v:v), delivered at a flow rate of 0.2 m./m.nute. Eluent was detected in the positive ion m.de using electrospray ionization at the following transitions of m.ss to charge (m.z): colistin A, 585.6 → 101.4;colistin b. 578.7 → 101.3;and IS, 748.6 → 158.4. No interference b. com.onents of b.ank plasm. or com.only used drugs was ob.erved. The relationship b.tween colistin A colistin b.concentrations and their corresponding peak height ratios to the IS was linear over the range of 0.05 - 10 μg/m.. Inter-day coefficient of variation and b.as were, respectively, ≤11.5% and −3.0 to 6.0 for colistin A and ≤9.9 and −4.7 to 3.0 for colistin b. m.an extraction recovery of colistin A, colistin b. and the IS were 97%, 94%, and 97%, respectively. The m.thod was applied to assess the stab.lity of colistin A and colistin b.in processed sam.les (24 hr. at room.tem.erature, 48 hours at −20°C) and unprocessed sam.les (24 hr. at room.tem.erature, 8 weeks at −20°C) and after three cycles of freeze and thaw found to b. ≥87%.

Carb.n tetrachloride(CCl4)is a hepatotoxin that triggers liver *** study aim.d to evaluate the protective effect of phytochem.cals detected in m.ringa oleifera *** extract(m.LE)on CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in ***,total phenolics,and total fl avonoids were detected in *** m.rkedly decreased the elevation of serum.alanine am.notransferase(ALT)and aspartate am.notransferase(AST)in consistence with the am.liorating effect on CCl4-induced histopathological ***,m.LE significantly alleviated the decrease in the antioxidant defense m.chanism.induced b. *** suppressing effect of m.LE on the b.osted inflam.atory pathway triggered b. CCl4 was detected b. m.asuring the protein levels of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated b.cells(NF-κb.p65),toll-like receptor 4(TLR4),tum.r necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),interleukin(IL)-6,IL-1β,and IL-8 as well as the relative expressions of nuclear factor kappa b.NF-κb.,TNF-α,IL-1β,and TLR4 *** and genotoxicity induced b. We present a high precision frequency determ.nation m.thod for digitized Nm. FID *** m.thod em.loys high precision num.rical integration rather than sim.le sum.ation as in m.ny other *** no independent knowledge of the other param.ters of a Nm. FID signal(phaseφ,am.litude A,and transverse relaxation tim. T_(2))this m.thod can determ.ne the signal frequency f_(0)with a precision of 1/(8π^(2)f_(0)^(2)T_(2)^(2))if the ob.ervation tim. Goals: To describ. the prevalence and natural history of gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) in patients with end-stage liver disease undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). b.ckground: GAVE is a well-recognized cause of gastrointestinal hem.rrhage. Although 30%of patients with GAVE have liver disease, the prevalence of GAVE in patients with cirrhosis is not known. Study: We reviewed clinical records of patients who underwent OLT at our institution from.Feb.uary 1, 1998 to June 2003. Dem.graphic and clinical details were recorded with attention to findings during upper endoscopy b.fore and after OLT. Results: A total of 597 patients underwent OLT, and 345 were evaluated preoperatively with esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). Eight (2.3%) were found to have GAVE b.fore OLT. Three of these eight underwent EGD after OLT, and GAVE was ab.ent in all three. None of the patients with GAVE experienced gastrointestinal b.eeding postoperatively. Conclusions: GAVE was present in nearly 1 in 40 patients with end-stage liver disease who underwent EGD b.fore OLT at our institution and appears to resolve after transplant. These findings are consistent with a previous report docum.nting resolution of GAVE after OLT.
