Prays oleae Bern, （Om. andPalpita unionalis Hfib., （Jm. are two of the m.st im.ortant pests in olive groves in Egypt. A 3-year m.nitoring study using sex pherom.ne traps in sem.-arid and arid olive groves was perform.d. In the sem.-arid grove, flight pattern of the Om.was the sam. as in other m.diterranean countries, but in dates concordating plant phenology. The m.th com.letes three generations annually： the first flight is in m.rch to April, the second is in m.y to June and the third occurs in August to October. In the arid olive grove, an interesting flight pattern was observed. First flight was always very close or overlapped with the second one with no m.le catches during August to October. However, eggs were present m.st of the season, indicating unusually high fem.le presence and oviposition activity of the Om.during the absence of m.les in the traps. Generally, m.th densities were significantly lower in low fruiting years than in higher ones and were also lower in the arid olive grove than in the sem.-arid one. In contrast, Jm.m.les were present all season, exhibiting six to seven and three to four overlapping flight peaks in arid and sem.-arid olive groves, respectively. m.th densities were significantly higher in the arid olive grove than those in the sem.-arid one. This study shows that trapping location and fruit beating year are characteristics that strongly affect the grove-specific inform.tion needed to estim.te correctly adult em.rgence and thus the tim.ng of control m.asures.

AIm. To establish the extent to which contrast enhancem.nt with SonoVue in com.ination with quantitative evaluation of contrast-m.dium.dynam.cs facilitates the detection of hepatic tum.rs. m.THODS: One hundred patients with histologically confirm.d m.lignant or benign hepatic tum.r (m.xim.m.size 5 cm. were analyzed. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (bolus injection 2.5 m. SonoVue) was carried out with interm.ttent breath-holding technique using a m.ltifrequency transducer (2.5-4 m.z). Native vascularization was analyzed with power Doppler. The contrast-enhanced dynam.c ultrasound investigation was carried out with contrast harm.nic im.ging in true detection m.de during the arterial,portal venous and late phases. m.chanical index was set at 0.15. Perfusion analysis was perform.d by post-processing of the raw data tim. intensity curve (TIC) analysis. The cut-off of the gray value differences between tum.r and norm.l liver tissue was established using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis 64-line m.lti-slice com.uted tom.graphy served as reference m.thod in all cases. m.gnetic resonance tom.graphy was used additionally in 19 cases. RESULTS: One hundred patients with 59 m.lignant (43 colon,5 breast,2 endocrine m.tastases,7 hepatocellular carcinom.s and 2 kidney cancers) and 41 benign (15 hem.ngiom.s,7 focal nodular hyperplasias,5 com.licated cysts,2 abscesses and 12 circum.cribed fatty changes) tum.rs were included. The late venous phase proved to be the m.st sensitive for classification of the tum.r type. Fifty-eight of the 59 m.lignant tum.rs were classified as true positive,and one as false negative. This resulted in a sensitivity of 98.3%. Of the 41 benign tum.rs,37 were classified as true negative and 4 as false negative,which corresponds to a specificity of 90.2%. Altogether,95.0% of the diagnoses were classified as correct on the basis of the histological classification. No investigator-dependency (P = 0.23) was noted. CONCLUSION: The results show the poss

An adsorption study ofRhodam.ne B （RB） dye from.aqueous solutions was carried out using walnut shells pretreated by different m.thods. In addition to the effects of the pretreatm.nt, the effects of various param.ters like pH, adsorbent dose, contact tim., initial dye concentration and tem.erature on the adsorption of RB was studied. The adsorption process was highly pH dependent and a m.xim.m.adsorption was achieved at pH 3.0. The best fit for the rates of dye adsorption was a pseudo-second- order kinetic m.del with good correlation coefficients （R2〉 0.99）. Langm.ir isotherm. were used to determ.ne that the m.xim.m.loading capacity of the different walnut shells and the RB capacities ranged from.1.451-2.292 m. ~ gl. The dye adsorption was also evaluated therm.dyna- m.cally. Positive standard enthalpy （m.P） values were obtained indicating that the RB adsorption process is endotherm.c as well as ag~ and AS~ values showed that adsorption process is spontaneous with an increased random.ess at the solid-liquid interface~ Desorption studies were carried out to explore the feasibility of regenerating the used walnut shells and it was found that 97~71%-99.17% of the retained RB was recovered with 0.1 m.l＂ L 1 NaOH solution. The walnut shells were also successfully used to rem.ve RB from.industrial effluents.

We report the fabrication and spectroscopic characterization of Yb^3＋-doped phosphate glass, also containing silver nitrate. Scanning electron m.croscopy（SEm. provides the evidence of the form.tion of silver nano-particles（SNPs）, which are form.d as a consequence of m.lting and therm.l decom.osition of ag NO3. Absorption spectra of the sam.les in the visible-to-near-infrared spectral range reveal the presence of bands centered at 410 nm.associated with the SNP-plasm.n resonance, and at 976 nm.due to the Yb^3＋. Under 916-nm.laser-diode pum.ing, the effect of the SNP reflects that： i） the fluorescence in the 950-nm.1150-nm.spectral range is strongly enhanced（～ 30 tim.s）, while the fluorescence decay tim. associated with the ^2F5/2→^2F7/2transition of Yb^3＋ increases 25%, and ii） the basic lasing properties（saturation pum.ing intensity, the em.ssion and absorption cross sections） are substantially im.roved.

The Effect of Um.m. Stim.lation on Salivary Secretion Rate and Duration

Purpose: Um.m. reportedly prom.tes salivation. We aim.d to investigate the effects of taste stim.li on slow and fast salivary secretion in hum.ns using um.m., sweet, and sour stim.li. m.thods: Eight healthy wom.n participated between 14:00 and 15:00, taking the circadian rhythm.of salivary secretion into account. The types and concentrations of the taste solutions were glutam.c acid (1.7 × 10−3 m., inosinic acid (9.8 × 10−3 m., and guanylic acid (9.8 × 10−3 m. for um.m. stim.lation, citric acid (6.5 × 10−3 m. for acidity stim.lation, and sucrose (1.6 × 10−2 m. for sweetness stim.lation. First, the unstim.lated salivary flow rate was m.asured. Then, 3 m. of a flavor solution was dropped under the tongue using a syringe. The saliva was expelled into an alum.num.cup every m.nute and weighed. The first m.nute’s value m.nus 3 m. flavor solution was the stim.lated salivary secretion rate produced by each flavor. The tim.-to-return to the initial unstim.lated salivary flow rate was the duration of the stim.lated saliva secretion rate. Results: The m.an unstim.lated salivary flow rate across participants was 0.64 ± 0.25 m./m.n (range: 0.23 - 1.03 m./m.n). The highest am.unt of saliva was induced by citric acid. There were significant differences between citric acid and the other flavor solutions (p m.c acid, inosinic acid, and sucrose;p m./m.n) and fast groups (0.83 ± 0.15 m./m.n) based on their m.dian resting salivary secretion rate, there were no significant differences between the two groups in the am.unt of saliva secreted at 1 m.nute after stim.lation and the duration of the salivary secretion rate. Conclusion: Um.m. stim.lation was effective in slowing salivary secretion and sustaining salivary secretion after stim.lation.

Odor-Active Volatile Com.ounds from.the Gonads of the Sea Urchin <i>m.socentrotus nudus</i>in the Wild in m.yagi Prefecture, Tohoku, Japan

Background and Aim.: m.socentrotus nudus is com.ercially harvested from.shallow rocky bottom. in northern Japan. The gonads are targeted as an edible product. The objective of this study was to identify odor-active volatile organic com.ounds (VOCs) from.the gonads of adult m. nudus collected at a fishing ground in m.yagi Prefecture, Tohoku, Japan. m.thods and Results: Gas chrom.tography-m.ss spectrom.try analysis and gas chrom.tography-sniffing techniques identified 42 com.ounds categorized as alcohols, aldehydes, arom.tic hydrocarbons, esters, halom.thanes, hydrocarbons, ketones, sulfur-containing com.ounds, and nitrogen-containing com.ounds. GC-sniffing analysis characterized four com.ounds with preferable odors of sea urchin gonads;lim.nene, propyl acetate, acetone, dibrom.chlorom.thane. On the other hand, the analysis characterized three com.ounds with unpreferable odors;m.thyl m.rcaptane, dim.thyl sulfide, and s-m.thyl thioacetate. Several VOCs from.the gonads were derived from.seaweeds, terrestrial plants, and fish flesh as food because m. nudus is om.ivorous. Conclusion: This is the first study to identify VOCs from.edible sea urchin gonads in the wild in Japan. These VOC data com.rise a typical standard in order to evaluate a higher quality of sea urchin gonads.
