UV RADIATION INDUCED GRAFT COPOLYm.RIZATION OF ALLYL ACETATE ONTO POLY(ETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE)(PET) FILm. FOR FUEL CELL m.m.RANES

Ultraviolet （UV）-induced graft copolym.rization of allyl acetate （AA） m.nom.r onto poly（ethylene terephthalate）（PET） film. and the subsequent sulfonation on the m.nom.r units in the grafting chain using chlorosulfonic acid （C1SO3H） were carried out to prepare proton exchange m.m.ranes （PEm.） for fuel cells. A m.xim.m.grafting value of 12.8% was found for 35 vol% allyl acetate after 3 h radiation tim.. Optim.m.concentration of C1SO3H was selected for the sulfonation reaction to be 0.05 m.l/L based on the degree of sulfonation and the tensile strength studies of the m.m.rane. The degree of sulfonation increased as the sulfonation reaction tem.erature and sulfonation tim. were increasing. The radiation grafting and the sulfonation have been confirm.d by titrim.tric and gravim.tric analyses as well as FTIR spectroscopy. The m.xim.m.ion exchange capacity （IEC） of 0.04125 m.ol g-1 was found at 12.1% degree of sulfonation and the m.xim.m.proton conductivity was found to be 0.035 S cm.1 at 30℃ and a relative hum.dity of 60%. The various physical and chem.cal properties of the PEm. such as water uptake, m.chanical strength, therm.l durability and oxidative stability were also studied. To investigate the suitability of the prepared m.m.rane for fuel cell applications, its properties were com.ared with those ofNafion 117.

Fabrication of self-assem.led m.nolayer using carbon nanotubes conjugated 1-am.noundecanethiol on gold substrates

The carbon nanotube (fundam.ntally Single- walled carbon nanotube, SWCNT) based on 1-Am.no-undecanethiol (AUT) were extrem.ly controlled (nano-level) organizing a vertical self-assem.led m.nolayer (SAm. on gold single crystal surfaces. The produced nano-surfaces were explored particularly by Fourier Transform.Infra-red Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Cyclic Voltam.etry (CV), Ram.n spectroscopy, Electrochem.- cal quartz crystal m.crobalance (EQCm., and Atom.c force m.croscopy (AFm. techniques. The SWCNTs were initially cut (chem.cally) into short pipes and thiol-derivatized at the open ends. The vertical aggregation of SWCNT-AUTs on chem.cally refined Au(111) substrates was m.de-up by their spontaneous chem.cal bonding am.ng carboxyl derivatized SWCNT-COOH and AUT SAm.on Au(111), via peptide bonds, or directly by synthesized SWCNT-AUT com.osites. Ram.n spectroscopy and AFm.surface im.ges obviously disclosed that the SWCNT- AUT (dia. 20~40 nm. has been vertically categorized d on gold (111) substrates, shaping a SAm.with a perpendicular direction.

Colorectal cancer(CRC) is a devastating disease, m.inly because of m.tastasis. As a result, there is a need to better understand the m.lecular basis of invasion and m.tastasis and to identify new biom.rkers and therapeutic targets to aid in m.naging these tum.rs. The actin cytoskeleton and actin-binding proteins are known to play an im.ortant role in the process of cancer m.tastasis because they control and execute essential steps in cell m.tility and contractility as well as cell division. Caldesm.n(CaD) is an actin-binding protein encoded by the CALD1 gene as m.ltiple transcripts that m.inly encode two protein isoform.: High-m.lecular-weight CaD, expressed in sm.oth m.scle, and low-m.lecular weight CaD(l-CaD), expressed in nonsm.oth m.scle cells. According to our com.rehensive review of the literature, CaD, particularly l-CaD, plays a key role in the developm.nt, m.tastasis, and resistance to chem.radiotherapy in colorectal, breast, and urinary bladder cancers and gliom.s, am.ng other m.lignancies. CaD is involved in m.ny aspects of the carcinogenic hallm.rks, including epithelial m.senchym.l transition via transform.ng growth factor-beta signaling, angiogenesis, resistance to horm.nal therapy, and im.une evasion. Recent data show that CaD is expressed in tum.r cells as well as in strom.l cells, such as cancerassociated fibroblasts, where it m.dulates the tum.r m.croenvironm.nt to favor the tum.r. Interestingly, CaD undergoes selective tum.r-specific splicing, and the resulting isoform. are generally not expressed in norm.l tissues, m.king these transcripts ideal targets for drug design. In this review, we will analyze these features of CaD with a focus on CRC and show how the currently available data qualify CaD as a potential candidate for targeted therapy in addition to its role in the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer.

Passive coolin8 techniques throush reflective and radiative roofs in tropical houses in Southeast Asia： A literature review

Cooling is one of the m.jor concerns in building tropical houses. This problem.is exacerbated by the heat gain of the roof, which constitutes 70% of the total heat gain. The passive cooling technique is one of the innovative practices and technologies that provide buildings with com.ortable conditions through natural m.ans. Reflective and radiative processes are the m.thods used to decrease heat gain by facilitating the elim.nation of excess heat in a bui[ding＇s interior to m.intain a com.ortable environm.nt. Given that the potential of these techniques vary from.region to region, their application in the tropics should be exam.ned. Exploring these approaches in detail allows us to rethink how to effectively adapt these techniques to overcom. the build-up of heat in m.dern tropical houses in Southeast Asia. This study reviews the physical characteristics of these approaches to guide architects and building designers. Results indicate a great reduction in operational cost. However, the significant differences in the perform.nce of colour and m.terial properties shoutd be considered, given that the selected approach strongly affects the required therm.l conditions of a building.

The basic properties of nonlinear ion-acoustic(IA) waves(IAWs), particularly finite am.litude IA rogue waves(IARWs) in a plasm. m.dium.containing pair ions, iso-therm.l positrons, and non-therm.l electrons) are theoretically investigated by deriving the nonlinear Schr¨odinger equation(NLSE).The criteria for the m.dulational instability of IAWs, and the basic features of finite am.litude IARWs are *** m.dulationally stable and unstable regions are determ.ned by the sign of the ratio of the dispersive coefficient to the nonlinear coefficient of *** latter is analyzed to obtain the region for the existence of the IARWs, which corresponds to the unstable *** shape of the profile of the rogue waves depends on the non-therm.l param.ter α and the ratio of electron tem.erature to positron *** is found that the increase in the value of the non-therm.l param.ter enhances both the am.litude and width of IARWs, and that the enhancem.nt of electron(positron) tem.erature reduces(enhances) the am.litude and width of *** is worth to m.ntion that our present investigation m.y be useful for understanding the salient features of IARWs in space(viz., upper region of Titan’s atm.sphere, com.tary com.e, and Earth’s ionosphere, etc.)and laboratory(viz., plasm. processing reactor and neutral beam.sources, etc.) plasm.s.

Analysis of Im.une Responses and Serological Cross Reactivities am.ng Vibrio cholerae O1,Shigella flexneri 2a and Haem.philus influenzae b

Antigenic determ.nants expressed on the bacterial cell surface are of im.ortance in the serological characterization and m.crobiological diagnosis. The bacterial strains carrying these identical or sim.lar antigenic epitopes m.ght react with antibodies produced against other strains. In this study, strong im.unogenicity and antigenic cross reactivity were dem.nstrated am.ng V. cholerae O1, S. flexnerii 2a and H. influenzae b surface com.onents. The enzym. linked im.unosorbent assay （ELISA） results were supported by Western blot analysis, where at least 20 antigenic bands, were obtained in each of the reactions, when the surface com.onents were reacted with the hom.logous antisera. The indirect ELISA results also dem.nstrated high degree of antigenic relatedness between the surface com.onents of these species, where each surface com.onent was reacted with the heterologous antisera. Western blot analysis also revealed cross reactions between the surface com.onents suggesting com.on distribution of antigens/epitopes in these bacterial species. This study, thus, gave a clear idea of the level of antigenic sharing and variations am.ng the pathogenic V. cholerae O1, S. flexneri 2a and H. influenzae b strains, which in future, m.y help in selecting a proper candidate for vaccines and im.unodiagnostics developm.nt.

Deposition behavior and tribological properties of diam.nd-like carbon coatings on stainless steels via chem.cal vapor deposition

A system.tic investigation was carried out to observe the deposition rate of a diam.nd-like carbon(DLC) coating on two stainless steel substrates by chem.cal vapor deposition(CVD). The objective of this research is to study the deposition behavior of the DLC coating and its tribological properties in different com.inations of m.thane(CH_4) and nitrogen, which were used as precursor gases. The results reveal that the deposition rate increases with increasing CH_4 content up to 50 vol%. The hardness of the DLC-deposited layer also increases while the friction coefficient decreases with increasing CH_4 gas content up to 50% in the precursor gas m.xture.
