The analysis of naturally occurring radionuclides （226ra, 232 Th and 40 K） and an anthropogenic radionuclide 13r Cs is carried out in some soil samples collected from Kohistan district of N.W.F.p. （pakistan）, using gamma-ray spectrometry. The gamma spectrometry is operated using a high purity Germanium （HpGe） detector coupled with a computer based high resolution multi channel analyzer. The specific activity in soil ranges from 24.72 to ***-1 for 22Tra, 21.73 to ***- 1 for 232Th, 7.06 to *** 1 for 1arcs and 298.46 to ***-1 for 40K with the mean values of 42.11, 43.27, 9.5 and ***-1, respectively. The radium equivalent activity in all the soil samples is lower than the safe limit set in the OECD report （370 ***-1）. man-made radionuclide 13r Cs is also present in detectable amount in all sell samples. presence of 13r Us indicates that the samples in this renlote area also recelvo some fallout from nuclear accident in Chernobyl power plant in 1986. The internal and external hazard indices have the mean values of 0.48 and 0.37 respectively. Absorbed dose rates and effective dose equivalents are also determined for the samples. The concentration of radionuclides found in the soil samples during the present study is nominal and does not pose any potential health hazard to the general public.

AIm: To evaluate the role of microrNA (mir)-146a, -155 and -122 in the duodenal mucosa of pediatric patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) and the effect of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) on these mirs in duodenal epithelial and fibroblast ***: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded biopsies derived from the macroscopically inflamed (CD inflamed: n = 10) and intact (CD intact: n = 10) duodenal mucosa of pediatric CD patients and control children (C: n = 10) were examined. Expression of mir-146a, -155 and -122 was determined by real-time polymerase-chain reaction (pCr). The expression of the above mirs was investigated in recombinant human TGF-β (1 nmol/L, 24 h) or vehicle treated small intestinal epithelial cells (CCL-241) and primary duodenal fibroblast cells derived from healthy children as ***: Expression of mir-146a was significantly higher in the inflamed duodenal mucosa compared to the intact duodenal mucosa of children with CD (CD inflamed: 3.21 ± 0.50 vs CD intact: 0.62 ± 0.26, p ≤ 0.01) and to the control group (CD inflamed: 3.21 ± 0.50 vs C: 1.00 ± 0.33, p ≤ 0.05). The expression of mir-155 was significantly increased in the inflamed region of the duodenum compared to the control group (CD inflamed: 4.87 ± 1.02 vs Control: 1.00 ± 0.40, p ≤ 0.001). The expression of mir-122 was unchanged in the inflamed or intact mucosa of CD patients compared to controls. TGF-β treatment significantly decreased the expression of mir-155 in small intestinal epithelial cells (TGF-β: 0.7 ± 0.083 vs Control: 1 ± 0.09, p ≤ 0.05) and also the expression of mir-146a (TGF-β: 0.67 ± 0.04 vs Control: 1 ± 0.15, p ≤ 0.01) and mir-155 (TGF-β: 0.72 ± 0.09 vs Control: 1 ± 0.06, p ≤ 0.05) in primary duodenal fibroblasts compared to corresponding vehicle treated control

AIm： To explore the role of ghrelin in gallstone disease. mETHODS： We carried out a cross-sectional study in 150 subjects, 38 with gallstones （cases） and 112 controls. We also did a real-time pCr-rT study in twenty gallbladder samples each. Body mass index （BNI）, serum insulin, ghrelin, and serum lipids were measured. Logistic regression analyses （univariate and multivariate） were conducted to estimate the probability of gallstone disease associated with serum ghrelin concentrations. rESULTS： Cases were statistically different from controls in gender distribution （p = 0.01）, age （53 vs 44 yr, p = 0.002）, BNI （28 vs 25; p = 0.004）, and glucose （5.26 vs 4.98 mmol/L; p = 0.05）. The prevalence of ghrelin serum levels above the third tercile was lower in subjects without metabolic syndrome （p 〈 0.05）. In a multivariate model, we found a protective effect, when ghrelin values were higher than the median value （Or = 0.27, 95%CI 0.09-0.82, p = 0.02）. Twenty （20%） gallbladder specimens expressed ghrelin mrNA. CONCLUSION： Serum ghrelin concentrations are associated with a protective effect of GD.

This paper describes the effects that temperature changes in the rhine river distributaries have on native and exotic fish diversity. Site-specific potentially affected fractions （pAFs） of the regional fish species pool were derived using species sensitivity distributions （SSDs） for water temperature. The number of fish species in the river distributaries has changed remarkably over the last century. The number of native rheophilous species declined up until 1980 due to anthropogenic disturbances such as commercial fishing, fiver regulation, migration barriers, habitat deterioration and water pollution. In spite of progress in river re- habilitation, the native rheophilous fish fauna has only partially recovered thus far. The total number of species has strongly in- creased due to the appearance of more exotic species. After the opening of the rhine-main-Danube waterway in 1992, many fish species originating from the ponto-Caspian area colonized the rhine basin. The yearly minimum and maximum river tempera- tures at Lobith have increased by circa 4 ~C over the period 1908-2010. Exotic species show lower pAFs than native species at both ends of the temperature range. The interspecific variation in the temperature tolerance of exotic fish species was found to be large. Using temporal trends in river temperature allowed past predictions of pAFs to demonstrate that the increase in maximum river temperature negatively affected a higher percentage of native fish species than exotic species. Our results support the hy- pothesis that alterations of the river rhine＇s temperature regime caused by thermal pollution and global wanning limit the full recovery of native fish fauna and facilitate the establishment of exotic species which thereby increases competition between native and exotic species. Thermal refuges are important for the survival of native fish species under extreme summer or winter temperature conditions

This paper summarizes recent data about magnesite and talc genesis in Carboniferous host rocks of Western Carpathians (Slovakia) , which occur in two distinct belts in tectonic superunit Veporicum and its contact zone with Gemericum. The northern Sinec magnesite and talc belt (with main deposits Kokava, Sinec, Samo, Hnust'a-mutnik) contains economic accummulation of magnesite and talc, while in the southern Ochtina belt ( main deposits in Dubrava massif-Dubrava, mikova, Jedl'ovec; Lubenik, Ochtina, Kosice-Bankov, Banisko, medvedia) the magnesite is *** magnesite genesis by successive replacement of Carboniferous calcite to dolomite and magnesite during metamorphic process ml (northern belt 280-400℃; , southern belt 370-420℃: ; radvanec & prochaska, 2001; Kodera & radvanec, 2002) , being supplied by mg from permoscythian evaporitic bittern brines, relates to Variscan post-collisional (post-VD) evolution. The extensional tectonics and the high heat flow facilitated the generation of a hydrothermal *** time-separated later metamorphic and sourcely different fluid flow event (m2; 1. c. ) produced talc. Tectonic, microtectonic, metamorphic and geochronological data relate the talc origin with the Alpine Upper Cretaceous (88-84 ma; maluski in Kovacik et al. , 1996) tectonothermal event AD2. This event, being the consequence of Alpine collisional ( AD1 ) crustal thickening and metamorphic core complex origin, meant regional extension and pervasive fluid flow of open system in crustal discontinuities. This process was prominent in the northern belt ( Sinec shear zone) located more closely to Veporic thermal dome, while towards its peripheral parts (southern Ochtina belt) the m2 metamorphic process and steatitization gradually *** from Sinec shear zone (being the prominent AD2 -AD3 structure of northern Sinec belt) , where the dolomite/magnesite lenses (replacement in m1) and their accompanying lithology were in AD1 sandwitched between more com

AIm: To determine the presence of Helicobacter species DNA in the liver of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients with and without cirrhosis as compared to controls, and to identify the bacterial species involved. mETHODS: Seventy-nine consecutive patients (HBV and HIV negative) with a liver sample obtained after liver biopsy or hepatic resection were studied: 41 with CHC without cirrhosis, 12 with CHC and cirrhosis, and 26 controls (HCV negative). polymerase chain reactions (pCrs) targeting Helicobacter 16S rDNA and species- specific were performed on DNA extracted from the liver. A gastric infection with H pylori was determined by serology and confirmed by 13C-urea breath test. rESULTS: Overall, Helicobacter 16S rDNA was found in 16 patients (20.2%). Although positive cases tended to be higher in CHC patients with cirrhosis (41.6%) than in those without cirrhosis (17.0%) or in controls (15.4%), the difference was not statistically significant (p =0.08). H pylori-like DNA was identified in 12 cases and H. pullorum DNA in 2, while 2 cases remained unidenti- fied. Gastric infection with H pylori was found in only 2 of these patients. CONCLUSION: Our results do not confirm the associ- ation of Helicobacter species DNA in the liver of CHC patients with advanced liver disease. The lack of correlation between positive H pylori serology and the presence of H pylori-like DNA in the liver may indicate the presence of a variant of this species.

predation rate with relation to species, sex and water temperature was tested among four different gammaridean spe- cies： Dikerogammarus villosus, Gammarus roeselii, Gammarus pulex and Gammarus fossarum. Tests were performed in micro- cosms in climate-controlled rooms at five different temperatures. Daphnia magna, a common water flea, served as prey. On ave- rage D. villosus showed the highest consumption rate of Daphnia magna over the entire temperature range, followed in decreas- ing order by G pulex, G roeselii and G fossarum. The predation rate of all species showed a distinct peak at 20~C. Correction of predation rates for body size gave somewhat different results. D. villosus is then still the most predatory of all gammaridean spe- cies tested followed by G. pulex, G. fossarum and G roeselii. The outcome of the Daphnia tests is consistent with results of other studies with different prey. This supports that the Daphnia test is a good and quick indicator of the predatory abilities in gam- maridean species at varying temperatures, and allows the prediction of how changing temperature regimes influence invasion impacts
