AIm:To demonstrate that CD14 + cells are an important source of the growth factor YKL40 in acute and chronic liver ***:Rats were inoculated with one dose of CCl4 to induce acute *** biopsies were obtained at 0,6,12,24,48 and 72 *** chronic damage,CCl4 was administered three days per week for 6 or 8 *** samples were collected,and cellular populations were isolated by liver digestion and purified by cell ***40 mRNA and protein expression were evaluated by realtime polymerase chain reaction and western ***:Acute liver damage induced a rapid increase of YKL40 mRNA beginning at 12 *** peaked at 24 h,with a 26fold increase over basal *** 72 h however,YKL40 expression levels had nearly returned to control *** the other hand,chronic damage induced a sustained increase in YKL40 expression,with 7and 9fold higher levels at 6 and 8 wk,*** pattern of YKL40 expression in different subpopulations showed that CD14+cells,which include Kupffer cells,are a source of YKL40 after acute damage at 72 h[0.09 relative expression units(REU)]as well as after chronic injury at 6 wk(0.11 REU).Hepatocytes,in turn,accounted for 0.06 and 0.01 REU after 72 h(acute)or 6 wk(chronic),*** rest of the CD14cells(including T lymphocytes,B lymphocytes,natural killer and natural killer T cells) yielded 0.07 and 0.15 REU at 72 h and 6 wk,***40 protein expression in liver was detected at 72 h as well as 6 and 8 wk,with the highest expression relative to controls(11fold;P≤0.05)seen at 6 *** were stimulated by *** demonstrate that under these conditions,these cells showed maximum expression of YKL40 at 12 h,with Pmpared with ***:Hepatic CD14 + cells are an YKL40 mRNA and protein source in acute and chronic liver injury,with expression patterns similar to growth factors implicated in inflammationfibrogenesis.

Trombe walls with porous medium insertion and their influence on thermal comfort in flats in Cusco,Peru

The Trombe wall is a passive indirect heating system which should be used in Cusco,Peru to improve thermal conditions against the typical frosts and low temperatures during winter in the high Andean *** to this problem,the use of a modified Trombe wall with insertion of porous medium is proposed to improve thermal comfort in flat buildings in *** research aims to analyse and compare the performance of dwellings without Trombe wall,with traditional Trombe wall,and with Trombe wall with glass and plastic pellets insertion in thermal comfort ***■CFD was used to simulate and analyse the *** simulation was performed with three prototype flats(55 m^(2),75 m^(2) and 95 m^(2))for six months of the *** the results obtained,the level of thermal comfort in the traditional scenarios is low with an average Pmv of-1.86,in the scenarios with Trombe wall is good and in the scenarios with Trombe wall with insertion of porous medium is slightly better than the previous one,reaching an average Pmv of+0.10 and a temperature of 21.90℃.The study carried out is important because it represents an efficient eco-sustainable heating alternative that improves the thermal comfort sensation in houses during the coldest months of the year.

To editor:Wernicke encephalopathy(WE)is an acute neurological disorder caused by a deficiency of vitamin B1(thiamine),with a prevalence of 1.3%in autopsy studies.1 Eighty-four percent of patients with WE will develop Korsakoff syndrome,which is characterized by amnesia and confusion.2 Although WE is more common in alcoholics,it can also be caused by vomiting,malnourishment,and other situations.

Empowering Rice Farmers in Nueva Ecija, Philippines: A Strategic Approach to Boosting Income through Special Purpose Rice Production

Low income is the main problem of millions of farmers who are cultivating 4.81 million hectares in the Philippines. This problem is attributed to challenges specifically low yield, low quality of produce, and significant post-harvest losses, particularly in a resource-scarce setting. This study aimed to help increase the farmers’ income in selected towns of Nueva Ecija through the promotion and use of special purpose rice production technology. Twenty (20) farmer-cooperators in three towns of Nueva Ecija were selected to demonstrate the production technology covering a total area of 4.75 hectares during the dry season, and 3.3 hectares during the wet season, both in 2023. Extension modalities such as training, techno-demo establishment, information material and technical assistance provision, and market linkage were undertaken to enhance their knowledge, attitude, and skills on special rice production and enterprise. The study utilized the descriptive quantitative method wherein the data were gathered through surveys, specifically personal interviews. Results showed that 70% of the farmer-cooperators were male and 60% were living below the poverty threshold. The farmers were 53 years old on average and engaged in farming as their primary source of income. The average yield of special purpose rice particularly the CLS-2 variety was higher (6.46 mT/ha and 6.22 mT/ha during dry and wet seasons, respectively) than that of inbred or non-special rice. The income per hectare from special purpose rice production per hectare was Php 75,420.00, which is higher than that of regular rice at Php 29,389.00, giving a higher benefit of Php 46,031.00. The technology adopters and area planted increased (from 6 to 9 and from 1.4 hectares to 2.75 hectares, respectively) in Licab, Nueva Ecija. The opposite was true in Sto. Domingo and Guimba, Nueva Ecija where farmers were discouraged by the marketing issues that arose.

Prevalence of refractive errors in children of Puerto Rico

AIm:To determine the prevalence of refractive error in 5-to 17-year-old schoolchildren in Puerto ***:A quantitative descriptive study of 2867 children aged 5 to 17y from all seven educational regions of Puerto Rico was conducted from 2016–*** error was determined via static and subjective *** with distance acuity≤20/40 or near visual acuity≤20/32 had a cycloplegic *** analysis included descriptive statistics,correlation coefficient,Kruskal-Wallis,Chi-square,and t test ***:Twenty percent of the children had a spherical equivalent refractive error≤-0.50 D,3.2%had a spherical equivalent≥+2.00 D,and 10.4%had astigmatism≥1 *** was a statistically(but non-clinically)significant myopic change in spherical equivalent refractive error with age(Pvalence of myopia increased with age(Pmatism(P=0.51).males had a significantly higher hyperopic spherical equivalent than females(Pmales had a higher prevalence of myopia(Pmales,but there was no difference in the hyperopia(P=0.74)or astigmatism prevalence(P=0.87).CONCLUSION:The prevalence of a spherical equivalent equal to or less than-0.50 D(myopia,20.7%)is one of the highest among similar-aged children *** studies should explore the rate of myopia progression in children in Puerto *** children must be monitored to examine the need for treatment of myopia progression.

How to boost the effects of exercise to favor traumatic brain injury outcome

Physical rehabilitation is an effective therapy to normalize weaknesses encountered with neurological disorders such as traumatic brain injury(TBI).However,the efficacy of exercise is limited during the acute period of TBI because of metabolic dysfunction,and this may further compromise neuronal *** we discuss the possibility to normalize brain metabolism during the early post-injury convalescence period to support functional plasticity and prevent long-term functional *** BDNF possesses the unique ability to support molecular events involved with the transmission of information across nerve cells through activation of its TrkB receptor,the poor pharmacokinetic profile of BDNF has limited its therapeutic *** flavonoid derivative,7,8-dihydroxyflavone(7,8-DHF),signals through the same TrkB receptors and results in the activation of BDNF signaling *** discuss how the pharmacokinetic limitations of BDNF may be avoided by the use of 7,8-DHF,which makes it a promising pharmacological agent for supporting activity-based rehabilitation during the acute post-injury period after *** turn,docosahexaenoic acid(C22:6n-3;DHA)is abundant in the phospholipid composition of plasma membranes in the brain and its action is important for brain development and *** is a major modulator of synaptic membrane fluidity and function,which is fundamental for supporting cell signaling and synaptic *** influences DHA function by normalizing DHA content in the brain,such that the collaborative action of exercise and DHA can be instrumental to boost BDNF function with strong therapeutic potential for reducing the deleterious effects of TBI on synaptic plasticity and cognition.
