Structural Analysis of magnesium-Aluminium Hydrotalcites modified with Iron III Obtained by Hydroxide Precipitation method

Hydrotalcite-type anionic clays are a group of important materials used in adsorption processes, mainly for organic pollutants removal due the layered double hydroxide structure. The layer-interlayer interactions provide a structural memory even after dehydration and dehydroxylation process, since a very stable interlayer anions are part of material composition, like the carbonate one. A limited numbers of trivalent modifier cations can replace the aluminium cation due the ionic radii mismatch or oxidation state restrictions. Transition metal cations can replace the aluminium one in octahedral site of hydroxide lamellas in order to improve the adsorptive behaviors. In this work, we have investigate three compositions of carbonated magnesium-aluminium hydrotalcite with dif-ferent iron (III) contents through the co-precipitation method at pH 11 and aging step at 60°C for 6 hours. Thermal analysis was performed aiming the determination of the hydration water and hydroxyl amounts in dried precipitate samples, taking in account the results obtained for X-ray diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption characterization for several thermally treated samples. All of synthesized samples showed high surface areas, even for high temperature of thermal treatment. The co-substitution with iron (III) reduced the temperature of dehydration and dehydroxylation process, but the co-substitution at 5 mol% provides other desirables characteristics, like a more amount of rhombohedral HDL phase and higher porosity, even after the thermal treatment at 500°C for 4 hours. This result makes that composition very applicable as a reusable adsorbent material in order to removal several types of micro-pollutant compounds in aqueous media.

Optimization of the Cultivation of Donor mesenchymal Stromal Cells for Clinical Use in Cellular Therapy

mesenchymal stromal cells(mSC)have shown their benefits in graft-versus-host disease(GVHD), with five unsettled matters: 1) mSCs expansion in medium with Fetal Bovine Serum(FBS)and its risk of xenoreaction;2) The number of cells indicated for therapy that is relatively high, with the need to optimize the expansion, number and time wise;3) The utilization of third party donors;4) Culture passage number(P);and 5) Source of the cells. This study was designed to determine the superiority of the Platelet Lysates(PL)over FBS on the expansion of mSC, the optimal cell’ plating density and days between each pass, and to investigate if donor total nucleated cells(TNC)obtained from the washouts of discharged bags and filters of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation(HSCT)can be expanded to be used at clinical grade. TNC were removed, plated and after the first passage were cultivated in different concentrations with FBS or PL, and the number of days to reach 80% of confluence was observed. Next, cultures with the same plating density were fed either with PL or with FBS and after seven days counted to analyze how much they had grown in that period. The proliferation of mesenchymal stromal cells in the presence of PL and SFB was averaged 11.88 and 2.5 times, respectively, in a period of 7 days. The highest concentration of plating cells using PL took less time to reach confluence as compared with the three lower ones. This study suggests that the PL is the best choice as a supplement to expand mSC and to allow the proliferation of enough number of mSC at P2 for clinical use.

Recently, typing of polymorphisms on the X chromosome has become a standard technique in forensic genetics and a growing number of short tandem repeats (STR) has been established in this chromosome related to genetic population studies. Knowledge of marker recombination is very important especially when the X chromosome typing is used in forensic kinship analysis. It is known that the meiotic recombination is not a simple function of the physical distance between segments of the DNA but the recombination events between them tend to be clustered at special regions of the chromosome. Information on the rate of recombination among markers can be gathered by studying families through several generations. In this work we have typed DNA samples of pedigree consisting of nineteen families in Rio de Janeiro, constituted of grandfather, mother and grandson, and in some cases grandmother and aunt, and reported the recombination of 10 STR markers of the X chromosome. The study of the linkage analysis using the LOD score has shown that the marker pairs DXS8378-DXS7423, DXS7132-DXS9898, DXS7132-GATA172D05 DXS9898-DXS7133 and DXS6809-DXS7133 are not transmitted in a random way, during a recombination event.

Drying of sugar cane bagasse was theoretically and experimentally studied ina cyclone. The experiments were carried out using hot air as drying agent. The influence of thecyclone conical part was studied. It was shown that the conical part has a great influence on theparticle residence time and, consequently, on moisture reduction. Experimental results were alikeindustrial ones. CFX 4.4 from AEA Technology was used to simulate some experiments. Simulated andexperimental results were close and showed that the presented model leads to a good prediction.

Production of Peanut Intercropped with Forage Palm in Pernambuco State, Brazil

The greater use of crop fields by increasing plant population is an alternative to minimize losses to the farmers who use crop intercropped provides other benefits such as lower incidence of diseases and pests, and better exploitation and enrichment agroecosystem. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the population of peanuts with and without inoculation and intercropping with forage palm on growth, productivity and biomass peanut. The treatments consisted of different populations of peanut (one, two and three rows of peanut row spacing of two meters of cactus pear), with and without inoculant, analyzed in subdivided plot scheme (3 × 2), totalizing six treatments in a randomized block design with four replications. The variables evaluated were plant height, number of branches, shoot dry mass and root nodule number, nodule dry weight, biomass productivity and legumes. The largest population of plants in number of lines of peanut intercropped with forage cactus promotes greater total biomass production and yield of beans and does not alter the height, branch number, dry mass of aerial part roots and nodules. The inoculant application did not result in to increased productivity biomass and growth of peanut plants, their use is not indicated. The planting of a row of peanuts between the rows of palm is not economically recommended.

Litterfall dynamics and soil carbon and nitrogen stocks in the Brazilian palm swamp ecosystems

Background: This study aimed to determine the litterfall production, accumulation, decomposition rate and nutrient stocks, and to estimate the soil carbon(C) and nitrogen(N) stocks in three palm swamp ecosystems with different land use intensities in the Southeast of ***: Three palm swamp ecosystems with different land use intensities were evaluated: Agua Doce(AD),conserved area;Capivara(CV), area with small agricultural practices;and Buriti Grosso(BG), area with an intensive land use. Produced and accumulated litterfall from the Cerrado areas surrounding the palm swamps were collected from October 2014 to September 2015, and the Ca, mg, K, and P concentrations were determined in the dry and rainy seasons. Soil samples were collected in the surrounding Cerrado and within the palm swamps until 100 cm soil depth to determine bulk density and soil C and N contents and ***: Annual litterfall production in the Cerrado surrounding palm swamps was similar in AD(3.58 mg·ha^-1·year^-1) and CV(3.79 mg·ha^-1·year^-1), and was lower in BG(2.84 mg·ha^-1·year^-1), and was more intense during the dry season. Furthermore, litterfall accumulation was higher in CV(7.12 mg·ha^-1·year^-1) and BG(6.75 mg·ha^-1·year^-1), culminating in lower decomposition rates. AD showed the highest decomposition rate(0.60) due to its vegetation structure and conservation. The macronutrient contents from the production and accumulated litterfall had a low influence of the land use, decreasing in the following order: Ca > K > mg > P. Soils in CV and BG palm swamp areas showed higher values of C and N contents, due to the use of land for agricultural crops and cattle raising in an extensive(rangeland) system. Assessment of the Integrity and Retention of Chromium (VI) in Portland Cement Pastes

Chromium is a heavy metal used for various applications such as in the manufacture of stainless steels, in chemicals for wood treatment, in tanneries, and in the refractory industry. The main problem associated with the use of chromium in these activities is the considerable volume of contaminated effluent that requires treatment, mainly due to its high mobility and toxicity in its hexavalent form. Immobilization methods arise as an efficient solution for the treatment of these wastes through converting them into inert and stable materials. The present paper aims to investigate Portland cement II’s paste properties with potassium dichromate addition in order to verify the chromium immobilization process. Analyses of moisture content, water absorption, axial compressive strength, and solubilization were done in samples at 7 and 28 days with 0%;0.5%;1.05;1.5%;2.0% and 2.5% potassium dichromate addition. The results showed the influence of this salt in cement hydration reactions, damaging the mechanical behavior and the water absorption capability of the material produced. In the solubilization test, all compositions had >99% efficiency of chromium immobilization in both ages of hydration, thus demonstrating the capability of a cementitious matrix to stabilize this metal.

One-week dual therapy with ranitidine bismuth citrate and clarithromycin for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection in Brazilian patients with peptic ulcer

AIm:To assess the efficacy and safety of ranitidine bismuth citrate plus clarithromycin given for 1 wk in Brazilian patients with peptic ulcer. mETHODS: One hundred and twenty patients with peptic ulcer were randomized in two treatment groups: (1)1-wk regimen consisting of ranitidine bismuth citrate 400 mg b.i.d. with clarithromycin 500 mg b.i.d. or (2) 2-wk regimen of the same treatment. Eradication of the infection was considered when both the histologic examination and the urease test were negative for the infection 3 mo after treatment. RESULTS: By intention to treat analysis, Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) was eradicated in 73% and 76% of patients, respectively treated for 1 or 2 wk (P>0.05). By per protocol analysis, the eradication rates were 80% and 83%, respectively, in patients treated for 1 or 2 wk (P>0.05). Nine patients (8.2%) reported minor side effects. CONCLUSION: One-week therapy with ranitidine bismuth citrate and clarithromycin is safe, well tolerated and effective for treatment of H pylori infection, and appears to be comparable to the 2-wk regimen in terms of efficacy.x

Angiotensin-(1-7)Changes Apoptosis-Related Genes Expression in Human Breast Cancer Cell Line T47D

Angiotensin-(1-7) [Ang-(1-7)] is a heptapeptide of the renin-angiotensin system with vasodilator and anti-proliferative properties. In the present study, we aim to investigate whether Ang-(1-7) induces apoptosis in breast cancer cells and whether the altered expression of apoptosis-related genes is involved in this process. Human breast cell line T47D was treated with angiotensin-(1-7) and angiotensin II (Ang II). Cell proliferation and apoptosis were quantified using hemocytometer and flow cytometry, respectively. The expression of 84 apoptosis-related genes was evaluated through qPCR array. Ang-(1-7), as opposed to Ang II, decreased proliferation and increased apoptosis in T47D cells. moreover, many pro-apoptotic genes were up-regulated, such as BAK1, BAX, BCL2L1, BID and BIK. In addition, some anti-apoptotic genes as AKT1 and XIAP were down-regulated by heptapeptide. Although a deeper study should be performed, our results support the hypothesis that Ang-(1-7) could change the expression of several genes related to apoptosis, interfering directly in the molecular pathways associated with the survival of breast cancer cells.

Occurrence of Delirium and Length of Stay of Patients in the Intensive Care Unit

Introduction: The delirium has received little attention from professionals working in the intensive care unit, mainly due to the fact that this is, rarely, the primary reason for patient admission. Given the high prevalence of delirium in an intensive care environment, the current guidelines recommend the daily assessment of delirium and a multidisciplinary approach. Delirium is a frequent and severe form of acute brain dysfunction, as well as an important source of concern in critical care. Objective: To assess the occurrence of delirium and time of stay in the intensive care unit. method: This is a quantitative, descriptive study, with a cross-sectional design, which was carried out in a university hospital located in the interior of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The sample consisted of 89 patients, of both sexes, aged between 24 and 92 years. The RASS and CAm-ICU scales were used to assess delirium. The data were collected every 12 hours, for 3 months, 7 days a week and in an uninterrupted manner. Results: Were evaluated 89 patients, of which 16 were excluded according to the scale criteria, leaving 73 patients. After evaluation, 22 patients were diagnosed with delirium and 51 patients without delirium. Of the patients who presented delirium, 13 deaths and 9 had high to the nursery. Of the patients who did not have delirium, 40 had high to the nursery and 11 deaths. Patients with delirium had an average hospital stay of 23.25 days and patients who did not have delirium had an average of 4.5 days hospitalization. Conclusion: We can infer that the longer the patient spends in the intensive care unit, the greater the chance of delirium occurring. Therefore, preventive and interventional measures are necessary to decrease the mortality rate in patients with delirium and early detection is an excellent tool to improve this outcome.
