The prevalence,associated factors,and impact of urinary incontinence in pregnant and postpartum women in Nanjing,China:A cross-sectional study

Objective:Urinary incontinence(UI)is highly prevalent in antenatal and postnatal women while the prevalence of UI varied largely from 3.84%to 38.65%.This study was to assess the prevalence of UI,the associated factors,and the impact of UI on daily life in pregnant and postpartum women in Nanjing,***:The prevalence of UI and the impact of UI on life were assessed by the validated Chinese version of International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-urinary incontinence-short form and the validated Chinese version of urinary incontinence quality of *** associated factors were estimated by using logistic regression ***:UI affected 37.80%of pregnant women and 16.41%of postpartum women of the study *** the pregnant participants,the prevalence rates of stress UI,urge UI,and mixed UI were 25.77%,4.47%,and 7.10%,*** the postpartum women,the prevalence rates of stress UI,urge UI,and mixed UI were 11.15%,1.92%,and 2.69%,*** both pregnant women and postpartum women,vaginal delivery had significantly increased the odds of reporting UI(p=0.007,p=0.003,respectively).The impact of UI on daily life was significantly greater in postpartum women compared to pregnant women especially in social embarrassment(p=0.000).Conclusion:The prevalence rates of UI were high in pregnant women in Nanjing,*** delivery significantly increased odds of reporting *** has a great impact on pregnant and postpartum women’s life,especially in social embarrassment.

Stress analysis of functionally graded rotating discs: analytical and numerical solutions

This study deals with stress analysis of annular rotating discs made of functionally graded materials（FGMs）.Elasticity modulus and density of the discs are assumed to vary radially according to a power law function,but the material is of constant Poisson＇s ratio.A gradient parameter n is chosen between 0 and *** n = 0,the disc becomes a homogeneous isotropic *** and radial stress distributions and displacements on the disc are investigated for various gradient parameters n by means of the diverse elasticity modulus and density by using analytical and numerical ***,a homogenous tangential stress distribution and the lowest radial stresses along the radius of a rotating disc are approximately obtained for the gradient parameter n = 1.0 compared with the homogeneous,isotropic case n = *** means that a disc made of FGMs has the capability of higher angular rotations compared with the homogeneous isotropic disc.

Exteriorized colon anastomosis for unprepared bowel: An alternative to routine colostomy

AIM: To see the possibility of avoiding routine colostomy in patients presenting with unprepared bowel. METHODS: The cohort is composed of 103 patients, of these, 86 patients presented as emergencies (self- inflected and iatrogenic colon injuries, stab wounds and blast injury of the colon, volvulus sigmoid, obstructing left colon cancer, and strangulated ventral hernia). Another 17 patients were managed electively for other colon pathologies. During laparotomy, the involved segment was resected and the two ends of the colon were brought out via a separate colostomy wound. One layer of interrupted 3/0 silk was used for colon anastomosis. The exteriorized segment was immediately covered with a colostomy bag. Between the 5th and 7th postoperative day, the colon was easily dropped into the peritoneal cavity. The defect in the abdominal wall was closed with interrupted nonabsorbable suture. The skin was left open for secondary closure. RESULTS: The mean hospital stay (± SD) was 11.5 ± 2.6 d (8-20 d). The exteriorized colon was successfully dropped back into the peritoneal cavity in all patients except two. One developed a leak from oesophago- jejunostomy and from the exteriorized colon. She subsequently died of sepsis and multiple organ failure (MOF). In a second patient the colon proximal to the exteriorized anastomosis prolapsed and developed severe serositis, an elective ileo-colic anastomosis (to the left colon) was successfully performed. CONCLUSION: Exteriorized colon anastomosis is simple, avoids the inconvenience of colostomy and can be an alternative to routine colostomy. It is suitable where colostomy is socially unacceptable or the facilities and care is not available.

An Evaluation to the Performance of Evacuated Tube Solar Heaters for Arid and Hot Areas

Solar energy applications could be the best alternative to the conventional fuels for the purposes of domestic,water and space heating and some industries in the sunny,arid,and hot *** the present study,the performance of an evacuated tube solar heater for water heating for months of February and March was experimentally *** was performed in a hot and arid area(Nasiriya City,South of Iraq).A solar heater with ten evacuated tube solar collectors with a capacity of 100 liter was used in the *** evacuated tube had a length of 1.8m with an outside diameter of 8 *** was observed that for the two selected months,water temperature of the solar heater reached a maximum more than 70°C during sunny days with no heat extraction from the tank of the solar ***,heat was extracted from the solar collector with four different flowrates 0.5,0.75,1,and 1.25 l/min,*** results showed that temperature of the solar heater behaved differently from the static *** the heat extraction begun,there was a gradual and noticeable decrease in the water temperature of the *** observed decrease was slight with the lowest flowrate(0.25 l/m)and becomes sharp with the highest flowrate(1.25 l/min).However,water temperature of the solar heater remained higher than 40°C for the investigated flowrates except the case of 1.25 l/*** results showed that evacuated tube solar heater can work efficiently in arid and hot areas in winter and spring seasons when the conditions of solar radiation are suitable.

Capacities in Facing Natural Hazards: A Small Island Perspective

Isolated communities on small islands are often characterized as vulnerable and marginalized. We studied the recent history of Laingpatehi, a village on Ruang Island off the north coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia to show that the marginalization-vulnerability nexus can be offset by capacity and social cohesion to enable sustainable livelihoods. The island has been impacted by volcanic eruptions,earthquakes, and competition for marine resources from mainland-based fishermen. The community has shown a remarkable ability to cope and prosper in the face of a series of external hazards. We used a sustainable livelihoods approach to identify the assets that enabled the villagers to cope. Strong social cohesion was central to the ability to organize the community and confront hazards. A diversified livelihood strategy drawing on the small island environment and its coastal and marine resources, income generating activities in a distant satellite village, and significant remittances from employment in other parts of Indonesia underpinned people’s capacities to face *** assistance played a supporting role. The case of Laingpatehi demonstrates how remoteness, rather than being a source of vulnerability, can provide access to existing resources and facilitate innovation. Disaster risk reduction strategies should focus more on reinforcing these existing capacities to deal with hazards and less on physical protection and postdisaster responses.

Identifying sediment discontinuities and solving dating puzzles using monitoring and palaeolimnological records

Palaeolimnological studies should ideally be based upon continuous, undisturbed sediment sequences with reliable chronologies. However for some lake cores, these conditions are not met and palaeolimnologists are often faced with dating puzzles caused by sediment disturbances in the past. This study chooses Esthwaite Water from England to illustrate how to identify sedimentation discontinuities in lake cores and how chronologies can be established for imperfect cores by correlation of key sediment signatures in parallel core records and with long-term monitoring data （1945-2003）. Replicated short cores （ESTH1, ESTH7, and ESTH8） were collected and subjected to loss-on-ignition, radiometric dating （210Pb, 137Cs, and 14C）, particle size, trace metal, and fossil diatom analysis. Both a slumping and a hiatus event were detected in ESTH7 based on comparisons made between the cores and the long-term diatom data. Ordination analysis suggested that the slumped material in ESTH7 originated from sediment deposited around 1805-1880 AD. Further, it was inferred that the hiatus resulted in a loss of sediment deposited from 1870 to 1970 AD. Given the existence of three superior 14C dates in ESTH7, ESTH 1 and ESTH7 were temporally correlated by multiple palaeolimnological proxies for age-depth model development. High variability in sedimentation rates was evident, but good agreement across the various palaeo- limnological proxies indicated coherence in sediment processes within the coring area. Differences in sedimenta- tion rates most likely resulted from the natural morphology of the lake basin. Our study suggests that caution is required in selecting suitable coring sites for palaeolimno-logical studies of small, relatively deep lakes and that proximity to steep slopes should be avoided wherever possible. Background Sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase insufficiency syndrome(SPLIS)or nephrotic syndrome type-14 is caused by biallelic mutations in ***,we conducted a systematic review to delineate the characteristics of SPLIS *** A literature search was performed in PubMed,Web of Science,and Scopus databases,and eligible studies were *** all patients,demographic,clinical,laboratory,and molecular data were collected and *** Fifty-five SPLIS patients(54.9%male,45.1%female)were identified in 19 *** consanguinity and positive family history were reported in 70.9%and 52.7%of patients,*** patients(54.9%)primarily manifested within the first year of life,nearly half of whom survived,while all patients with a prenatal diagnosis of SPLIS(27.5%)died at a median[interquartile(IQR)]age of 2(1.4–5.3)months(P=0.003).The most prevalent clinical feature was endocrinopathies,including primary adrenal insufficiency(PAI)(71.2%)and hypothyroidism(32.7%).Kidney disorders(42,80.8%)were mainly in the form of steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome(SRNS)and progressed to end-stage kidney disease(ESKD)in 19(36.5%)patients at a median(IQR)age of 6(1.4–42.6)*** 30 different mutations in SGPL1,the most common was c.665G>A(***222Gln)in 11(20%)***-six(49.1%)patients with available outcome were deceased at a median(IQR)age of 5(1.5–30.5)months,mostly following ESKD(23%)or sepsis/septic shock(23%).Conclusion In patients with PAI and/or SRNS,SGPL1 should be added to diagnostic genetic panels,which can provide an earlier diagnosis of SPLIS and prevention of ESKD and other life-threatening complications.

研究浅水湖泊中植物残体对水生植物的表现率,用于重建近代水生植被历史,可为治理湖泊富营养化,恢复湖泊生态环境提供依据。研究选址为英国北部的一个小湖泊,通过水生植物调查及表层沉积物中植物残体和孢粉分析,及地理信息系统方法定量研究植物残体对水生植物的表现率。结果表明:沉积物中植物残体精确地反映了植物优势种的存在;植物和植物残体的关系是很复杂的,有些植物在残体中表现率明显超高,而有些表现率偏低;应把叶子和其它非繁殖植株部分作为恢复近代多年生植物历史依据;植物残体传输性较差,主要集中在植物母体附近;利用植物残体与孢粉分析相结合的方法能更准确地重建植被历史。

The Effect of a Liquid Cover on the Thermal Performance of a Salinity Gradient Solar Pond:An Experimental Study

SalinityGradient Solar Ponds(SGSPs)offer the potential to capture and store solar energy for use in a range of domestic and industrial activities in regions with high solar ***,the evaporation of water from these ponds is a significant problem that must be overcome for them to be deployed ***,two ponds were constructed in the city of Nasiriya,*** two ponds were cylindrical with a diameter of 1.4 m and a total depth of 1.4 *** water body in the two ponds was constructed with layer depths of 0.5,0.75 and 0.1 m for the lower convective zone(LCZ),non-convective zone(NCZ)and the upper convective zone(UCZ)*** of the two ponds was covered with a thin liquid paraffin layer(0.5 cm)to eliminate evaporation from the surface of the *** behavior of the standard SGSP and that of the covered pond with evaporation suppressed can be straightforwardly *** experimental units were run for six months from 1st of February to 31st of July *** was shown in the first instance that by covering the pond with a thin layer of paraffin,that evaporation could be *** results showed that for the conventional SGSP,the temperature of the LCZ reached a maximum of ca.76℃ while in the covered pond the temperature of the LCZ was consistently lower than that in the uncovered pond by approximately 5-6℃.The results also indicated that the temperature of the UCZ in the covered pond was higher than that in the uncovered pond by about 10℃ in the second half of the study ***,it was noted that on rainy days the paraffin layer was swept away from the surface;and this could hinder the implementation of thin liquid cover in the large SGSP.

●High-quality and low-quality root litter had contrasting patterns of mass loss.●Greater litter-derived C was incorporated into soils under high-quality root litter.●Root litter decay rate or litter-derived C were related to soil microbial diversity.●Root litter quality had little effect on soil physicochemical properties.●High root litter quality was the main driver of enhanced soil C storage *** root litter is a major contributor to soil carbon(C)storage in forest *** decomposition,the quality of root litter could play a critical role in soil C ***,it is unclear whether root litter quality influences soil C storage *** conducted a two-year greenhouse decomposition experiment using 13C-labeled fine root litter of two tree species to investigate how root litter quality,represented by C to nitrogen(C/N)ratios,regulates decomposition and C storage efficiency in subtropical forest soils in China.‘High-quality’root litter(C/N ratio=26)decayed faster during the first year(0−410 days),whereas‘low-quality’root litter(C/N ratio=46)decomposed faster toward the end of the two-year period(598−767 days).However,over the two years of the study,mass loss from high-quality root litter(29.14±1.42%)was lower than‘low-quality’root litter(33.01±0.54%).Nonetheless,root litter C storage efficiency(i.e.,the ratio of new root litter-derived soil C to total mineralized root litter C)was significantly greater for high-quality root litter,with twice as much litter-derived C stored in soils compared to low-quality root litter at the end of the *** litter quality likely influenced soil C storage via changes in microbial diversity,as the decomposition of high-quality litter declined with increasing bacterial diversity,whereas the amount of litter-derived soil C from low-quality litter increased with fungal *** results thus reveal that root litter quality mediates decomposition and C storage in subtropical forest soils in Ch
