Three-dimensional(3D)porous absorbents have attracted significant attention in the oily wastewater treatment technology due to their high porosity and *** their amphiphilic surface,they have a propensity to simultaneously absorb water and oil,which restricts their range of *** this study,a reduced graphene oxide and titanium dioxide nanocomposite(rGO/TiO_(2))was used to fabricate an ultra-hydrophobic melamine sponge(MS)through interfacial modification using a solution immersion *** further modify it,poly-dimethylsiloxane(PDMS)was grafted onto its surface to establish stronger covalent bonds with the *** water contact angle of the sponge(rGO/TiO_(2)/PDMS/MS)was 164.2°,which satisfies the condition for *** evidence of its water repellency was demonstrated by the Cassie-Baxter theory and the lotus leaf *** a result of the increased density of rGO/TiO_(2)/PDMS/MS,it recorded an initial capacity that was 2 g/g lower than the raw MS for crude oil *** raw MS retained 53% of its initial absorption capacity after 20 cycles of absorption,while rGO/TiO_(2)/PDMS/MS retained 97%,suggesting good *** oil and organic solvent recovery(90%-96%)was demonstrated by rGO/TiO_(2)/PDMS/MS in oil-water *** a continuous separation system,it achieved a remarkable separation efficiency of 2.4×10^(6)l/(m^(3)·h),and in turbulent emulsion separation,it achieved a demulsification efficiency of 90%-91%.This study provides a practical substitute for massive oil spill cleaning.

The high nitrite content in edible bird’s nests is a major concern to the local swiftlet *** lowers the price of the edible bird’s nests and it brings severe health hazards to consumers and *** research investigated the nitrite and nitrate contents of eight types of local edible bird’s nests by using ion chromatography system and evaluating its colour using the CIE system in l^*a^*b^**** nitrite content obtained ranged from 5.7 lg/g for the house nests to 843.8 lg/g for the cave *** nitrate content for the house and cave nests was 98.2 lg/g and 36,999.4 lg/g,*** cave nests with darker and redder colour had higher nitrite and nitrate contents than the brighter and more yellow house *** likely suggests that the nitrite and nitrate contents have correlations with edible bird’s nests *** studies suggested that the nitrite content had high correlations with colour parameters,l^*a^*b^*of edible bird’s nests at significant level of Ple bird’s nests’colour may be a useful indicator for measuring nitrite and nitrate contaminations.

The drying kinetics of Roselle （Hibiscus sabdariffa l） of variety Terengganu （UMKl-1） and the quality attribution of Roselle were studied. The experiments were conducted using four different drying methods, including solar greenhouse drying （SD）, solar greenhouse with intermittent heat pump drying （SIHP）, hot air drying （HA） and heat pump drying （HP）. Among the four drying methods, HP achieved the highest drying rate at a range from 0.054 g H20-（g DM）-1. rain-1 to 0.212 g H20-（g DM）-1. rain 1 while SD had the lowest drying rate, measured at 0.042 g H2O. （g DM） ***- 1. The analysis on colour kinetics revealed that there is no significant colour loss （p 〉 0.05） observed from HP＇s dried Roselle. Greater amount of flavonoid compounds i.e. protocatechuic acid was found in SD and SIHP dried finished product whereas HP＇s dried Roselle contains higher percentage of catechin as compared to other drying methods.

Modifying action of heavy metal salts on an-ti-inflammatory aspirin action

Nowadays pollution of the environment is one of the major problems of mankind. Moreover, studying of the effect of different kinds of med- icine on selected, specially bred, non-exposed to external pollutants animals is becoming distant from reality. Thus in this work we have investigated the modifying action of heavy metals on anti-inflammatory effect of aspirin. The investigation were carried out on rats which were injected during 7 days intraperitoneally by PbCl3, HgCl2, CdCl2 in concentration of 100, 20, 1 mg/kg accordingly, modulating accumulation of the metals in the organism tissues. On the 8 days inflammation was invoked by formalin. As anti-inflammatory medicine was use aspirin. Judging by obtained results the conclusion can be drawn that cadmium in concentration 1 mg/kg significantly increases anti-inflammatory aspirin activity. The observed outcome can be explained in the following way. It is generally known that zinc in a certain concentration demonstrates anti-inflammatory properties. Be- ing an element of the same group cadmium has similar properties and also can have anti-inflammatory action. lead and mercury suppre- ssed anti-inflammatory aspirin activity. Obvious inhibitory action of mercury and lead salts on aspirin action related to the fact that these elements by themselves were inflammation factors. From the obtained results the following conclusion can be drawn: a definite dose of anti-inflammatory medicine (aspirin) which is sufficient in normal conditions became less effective against the background of accumulation of ions of some heavy metals in an organism.

Cameroon Green Energy Potentials: Field Survey of Production, Physico-Chemical Analyses of Palm Kernel Oil for Industrial Applications

This paper reports a field survey undertaken to determine the availability of raw material for palm kernel oil commercial production for industrial applications. Both industrial and artisanal wastes from palm kernel oil production were also surveyed as raw material (palm kernel seeds) for green energy production. Results of the field study show that 22% of palm kernel seeds (which represents tons of waste) resulting from palm oil processing plants are dumped while at the artisanal level, 80% of palm kernel seed waste is dumped. Analysis of field study data shows that large amounts of waste palm kernel seeds are available to enable large scale production of palm kernel oil (PKO) for desirable industrial applications in green energy production. The paper also reports on the physical and chemical properties of Cameroon palm kernel oil (PKO). Palm kernel oil was extracted using mechanical press and solvent extraction. The palm kernel oil (PKO) from Cameroon was analyzed by standard physico-chemical methods. Results of the physical measurements show a specific gravity of PKO of 0.92 kg/L, viscosity of 26.03 cSt and at 5.93 cSt at 40°C and 100°C respectively, viscosity index of 185, pour point of 20°C, cloud point of 29le="color:#4F4F4F;font-family:" font-size:14px;white-space:norma

Synthesis and Characterization of Bio-Glycerol from Cameroon Palm Kernel Seed Oil

Bio-glycerol was synthesized from Cameroon palm kernel oil (PKO) through the transesterification procedure. Palm kernel oil extracted from palm kernel seeds using mechanical expression and solvent extraction was purified and characterized by physico-chemical methods and used in the transesterification process to give biodiesel and bio-glycerol. The biodiesel was purified and characterized as reported in previous articles. Our focus in this article is on glycerol, an important by-product of the transesterification process which has potential pharmaceutical, cosmetic and engineering applications. The bio-glycerol was purified by acidification and the purified glycerol was subjected to physical and chemical characterization. The specific gravity of glycerol was obtained as 1.2 kg/l, viscosity at 40°C gave 1500 cSt and 500 cSt at 100°C;pH was 7.4;the flash point was 160°C, and the ASTM color was 2.0 before purification and zero after purification. The sulfur content was 0.016%w/v. This sulfur content is low thus posing no environment threat. The chemical composition of the synthesized bio-glycerol determined using IR spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) confirmed the known chemical structure of glycerol. The purification and analysis of bio-glycerol is important as it can find applications in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries inter alia.

Background: Acute acoustic trauma (AAT) is an acute hearing impairment caused by intense noiseimpact. The current management strategy for AAT with substantial hearing loss in the Dutch militaryis the combination therapy with corticosteroids and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). In a previousstudy, early initiation of the combination therapy was associated with better outcomes. Therefore, weperformed a new analysis to assess the difference in hearing outcome between patients in whomcombination therapy was started within two days, versus after more than two ***: A retrospective analysis was performed on military patients diagnosed with AAT with substantial hearing loss who presented between February 2018 and March 2020. Absolute and relativehearing improvement between first and last audiograms were calculated for all affected frequencies(defined as loss of 20 dB on initial audiogram). We also determined the amount of patients whorecovered to the level of Dutch military requirement, and performed speech discrimination ***: In this analysis, 30 male patients (49 ears) with AAT were included. The median age was 24.5years (IQR 23e29). The median time to initiation of therapy with corticosteroids and HBOT were one andtwo days, respectively. HBOT was started within two days in 31 ears, and after more than two days in 18ears. The mean absolute and relative hearing gains were 18.8 dB (SD 14.6) and 46.8% (SD 31.3) on allaffected frequencies. The 100% discrimination/speech perception level improved from 64.0 dB to 51.7 dB(gain 12.3 dB ± 14.1). There was significantly more improvement in absolute and relative hearingimprovement when HBOT was started in 2 days, compared to >2 ***: Our analysis shows results in favor of early initiation ( 2 days) of the combination treatmentof HBOT and corticosteroids in patients with AAT.
