Influence of birth order, birth weight, colostrum and serum immunoglobulin G on neonatal piglet survival

Background： Intake of colostrum after birth is essential to stimulate intestinal growth and function, and to provide systemic immunological protection via absorption of Immunoglobulin G （IgG）. The birth order and weight of 745 piglets （from 75 litters） were recorded during a one-week period of farrowing. Only pigs weighing greater than 0.68 kg birth weight were chosen for the trial. Sow colostrum was collected during parturition, and piglets were bled between 48 and 72 hours post-birth. Piglet serum IgG and colostral IgG concentrations were determined by radial immunodiffusion. Results： Sow parity had a significant （P 〈 0.001） effect on sow colostral IgG concentration, being 5% higher in multiparous females. Sow colostral IgG concentration explained 6% and piglet birth order accounted for another 4% of the variation observed in piglet serum IgG concentration （P 〈 0.05）; however, birth weight had no detectable effect. Piglet serum IgG concentration had both a linear （P 〈 0.05） and quadratic effect （P 〈 0.05） on % survival. Piglets with 1,000 mg/dl serum IgG or less （n=24） had a 67% survival; whereas, piglets with IgG concentrations between 2250 to 2500 mg/dl （n=247） had a 91% survival. Birth order had no detectable effect on survival, but birth weight had a positive linear effect （P 〈 0.05）. Piglets weighing 0.9 kg （n = 107） at birth had a 68% survival rate, and those weighing 1.6 kg （n = 158） had an 89% survival. Conclusion： We found that the combination of sow colostrum IgG concentration and birth order can account for 10% of the variation of piglet serum IgG concentration and that piglets with less than 1,000 mg/dl IgG serum concentration and weight of 0.9 kg at birth had low survival rate when compared to their larger siblings. The effective management of colostrum uptake in neonatal piglets in the first 24 hrs post-birth may potentially improve survival from birth to weaning.

On the installation of an in situ large-scale vertical SEALing (VSEAL) experiment on bentonite pellet-powder mixture

Recently,the Institute for Radiological protection and Nuclear Safety(IRSN)has launched VSEAL(Vertical SEALing)project to investigate the impact of gas migration on the long-term performance of bentonite based vertical sealing systems(VSS).The first VSEAL in situ test was emplaced in IRSN’s Underground Research Laboratory(URL)in Tournemire(France)in 2019 and was equipped with 76 wired and wireless *** test is still in progress,but the collected set of data provides already valuable information of the hydro-mechanical behavior of VSS during *** swelling core consists of a mixture of highdensity pellets and powder of mX80 bentonite in a ratio of 80/20(in dry mass).An innovative method was adopted to drill a 1-m diameter and w10-m deep shaft in order to minimize the rock perturbation at the *** a specific protocol was adopted to install the bentonite mixture together with a careful characterization of the core during construction,VSEAL 1 constitutes the unique in situ sealing test with a well-known initial structural distribution of the pellets and the *** heterogeneities occurred within the experiment during the installation process:a damaged zone developed around the shaft walls due to the interruption of the installation operations caused by COVID19 lockdown in France;a technological gap with a variable thickness between the last pellets layer and the top confining lid and a heterogeneous distribution of the bentonite powder at some layers inducing large inter pellets voids close to the bentonite-rock *** injected water volume,relative humidity,water content and swelling pressure in both radial and axial directions were *** of the results showed that the presence of installation-induced heterogeneities led to the generation of preferential flow paths that influenced the swelling pressure evolution at radial and axial directions.

To assess dietary myo-inositol in reducing stem cell activation in colitis, and validate pβ-cateninS552 as a biomarker of recurrent *** examined the effects of dietary myo-inositol treatment on inflammation, pβ-cateninS552 and pAkt levels by histology and western blot in IL-10-/- and dextran sodium sulfate-treated colitic mice. Additionally, we assessed nuclear pβ-cateninS552 in patients treated with myo-inositol in a clinical trial, and in patients with and without a history of colitis-induced *** mice, pβ-cateninS552 staining faithfully reported the effects of myo-inositol in reducing inflammation and intestinal stem cell activation. In a pilot clinical trial of myo-inositol administration in patients with a history of low grade dysplasia (LGD), two patients had reduced numbers of intestinal stem cell activation compared to the placebo control patient. In humans, pβ-cateninS552 staining discriminated ulcerative colitis patients with a history of LGD from those with benign *** crypts with increased numbers of pβ-cateninS552 - positive cells can be utilized as a biomarker in colitis-associated cancer chemoprevention trials.

Photoluminescent Tb^(3+)-based metal-organic framework as a sensor for detection of methanol in ethanol fuel

The sensing capability of a Tb^(3+)-metal-organic framework, based on its photoluminescence, was used for detection of methanol in ethanol fuel. It was synthesized using terbium and trimesic acid as a metal ion center and ligand, respectively. Powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy were employed to characterize the synthesized mOF-76 structural features. According to the results, mOF-76 was successfully obtained with minor synthetic modification and its activated form(named TbTmA) was tested as a sensor for methanol. Tb^(3+) luminescence intensity increases as the methanol concentration in ethanol fuel also increases and the water content does not affect this response. Our findings indicate TbTmA as an appropriate sensor for evaluating ethanol fuel adulteration by methanol addition above the allowed limit.

DBD-Corona Discharge for Degradation of Toxic Gases

The non-thermal plasma technology is a promising technique to treat SO2 and NOx. Chemical radicals produced with this technology can remove several pollutants at atmospheric pressure in a very short period of time simultaneously. Both theoretical and experimental study on SO2 and NOx removal, by a dielectric barrier discharge （DBD） with corona effect, is presented.

Effect of Ultraviolet Radiation on Hsp70 Protein Expression in HaCaT Cells

Ultraviolet radiation by its wavelength is divided into: UVA, UVB and UVC. Only UVA and UVB manage to penetrate the ozone layer, but due to anthropological activities, all of them are capable of interacting with humans to a greater or lesser extent, and can generate adverse effects such as cellular stress when interacting with intra-and extracellular biomolecules. The skin is the first organ in contact with UV radiation, and the stress it generates can be analyzed by the expression of a bioindicator of cellular damage such as Hsp70. Therefore, the objective of the project was: to determine the effect of UVA, UVB and UVC radiation on HaCaT epithelial cells, by analyzing the expression of Hsp70. materials and methods: HaCaT cells were cultured in vitro, which were irradiated with UVA, UVB and UVC light at different doses, to subsequently determine the degree of Hsp70 expression by Immunodetection by PAGE-SDS and Western Blot. Results: Basal expression of Hsp70 was observed in no irradiated HaCaT cells. When HaCaT cells were irradiated with UVA, UVB, UVC, an increase in this Hsp70 protein was observed. With UVA, a higher degree of expression was observed at a time of 30 minutes of irradiation. With UVB the highest expression shifted to a time of 20 minutes. With UVC, overexpression was observed after 10 minutes. Conclusion: UV radiation generates cellular stress on HaCaT cells, evaluated by the stress bioindicator Hsp70. According to the wavelength of UV radiation, those that have a shorter wavelength have a greater potential for cellular damage, such as UVC.

A decrease of docosahexaenoic acid in testes of mice fed a high-fat diet is associated with impaired sperm acrosome reaction and fertility

Obesity is a major worldwide health problem that is related to most chronic diseases,including male *** to its wide impact on health,mechanisms underlying obesity-related infertility remain *** this study,we report that mice fed a high-fat diet(HFD)for over 2 months showed reduced fertility rates and increased germ cell apoptosis,seminiferous tubule degeneration,and decreased intratesticular estradiol(E2)and E2-to-testosterone ***,we also detected a decrease in testicular fatty acid levels,behenic acid(C22:0),and docosahexaenoic acid(DHA,22:6n-3),which may be related to the production of dysfunctional ***,we did not detect any changes in the frequency of seminiferous tubule stages,sperm count,or rate of in vitro ***,there was an increase in spontaneous and progesterone-induced acrosomal exocytosis(acrosome reaction)in spermatozoa from HFD-fed *** data suggest that a decrease in E2 and fatty acid levels influences spermatogenesis and some steps of acrosome biogenesis that will have consequences for ***,our results add new evidence about the adverse effect of obesity in male reproduction and suggest that the acrosomal reaction can also be affected under this condition.

Exploratory study of non-invasive,high-resolution functional macular imaging in subjects with diabetic retinopathy

AIm:To evaluate a high-resolution functional imaging device that yields quantitative data regarding macular blood flow and capillary network features in eyes with diabetic retinopathy(DR).mETHODS:Prospective,cross-sectional comparative case-series in which blood flow velocities(BFVs)and noninvasive capillary perfusion maps(nCPms)in macular vessels were measured in patients with DR and in healthy controls using the Retinal Functional Imager(RFI)***:A total of 27 eyes of 21 subjects were studied[9 eyes nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy(NPDR),9 eyes proliferative diabetic retinopathy(PDR)and 9 controls].All diabetic patients were type *** patients with NPDR and 5 eyes with PDR also had diabetic macular edema(DmE).The NPDR group included eyes with severe(n=3)and moderate NPDR(n=6),and were symptomatic.A significant decrease in venular BFVs was observed in the macular region of PDR eyes when compared to controls(2.61±0.6 mm/s and 2.92±0.72 mm/s in PDR and controls,respectively,P=0.019)as well as PDR eyes with DmE compared to NPDR eyes(2.36±0.51 mm/s and 2.94±1.09 mm/s in PDR with DmE and NPDR,respectively,P=0.01).CONCLUSION:The RFI,a non-invasive imaging tool,provides high-resolution functional imaging of the retinal microvasculature and quantitative measurement of BFVs in visually impaired DR *** isolated diminish venular BFVs in PDR eyes compared to healthy eyes and PDR eyes with DmE in comparison to NPDR eyes may indicate the possibility of more retinal vein compromise than suspected in advanced DR.

Tropical mountain ranges shape the structure of tree communities and promote highly diverse natural ***“Bosque Protector Chong on-Colonche”(BPCC),an 86,000-ha mountain formation situated on the coast of Ecuador,is biogeographically important for the region by connecting floristic elements of the wet Choco and the dry Tumbesian *** understanding of the factors that model tree and palm diversity and distribution in this mountain range are *** measured and identified all trees and palms(DBH≥10 cm)in 289 plots of0.2 ha,distributed throughout *** used generalized linear models to explain the relationship between forest diversity and structure and climatic variables(temperature,rain,aridity),and *** then used cluster and non-metric multidimensional scale(NmDS)analyses to search for distinct forest communities within the *** partition(varpart)was used to determine which predictor variables best explained these distinct forest communities.A species indicator analysis identified the species most likely to define these distinct forest ***,we carried out a niche modeling approach to identify the potential distribution of these forest communities within *** total,we identified 220 tree and palm species in our *** average number of species per plot was 17.8±5.8,ranging from 3 to 40 *** methods sorted the 289study plots into six different forest communities,three communities in the dry forest and three in the semi-humid Garúa *** and temperature,but not altitude or aridity,explained floristic *** results emphasize the high but little cataloged diversity in the lowland mountain rainforests of coastal Ecuador.
