Documentary research on social innovation in health in Latin America

Background:Identifying social innovation in health initiatives,promoting quality of life through them,and transforming current health conditions demand the knowledge,comprehension and appropriation of the theoretical and methodological developments of this concept Academic developments in social innovation have mainly occurred in and been documented for English-speaking countries,although relevant experiences have been implemented in Latin *** this article,we describe and analyze how social innovation in health is being approached and understood in this *** text:To identify the theoretical and methodological developments of social innovation in health between 2013 and 2018,a scoping review with a mixed approach was carried *** texts in English,Spanish and Portuguese were selected for a process of reflexive analysis of intra and intertextual *** approaches identified in the studied initiatives were *** most applied approaches were innovation in health,technological innovation in health and social innovation,each with twelve publications,and social innovation in health and ecohealth with ten and seven publications *** approaches showed a general interest in reaching the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs),the Alma Ata Declaration and the Ottawa ***:The social innovation in health approach in Latin America adopts educational strategies,identifies risk factors,optimizes resources,promotes interculturality,participation,community empowerment,and enhances intersectorality and *** an approach,process,program or solution,social innovation in health is a conceptual category under *** research provides a baseline for other systematic reviews on the subject.

Systematic Conservation Assessment for Most of the Colombian Territory as a Strategy for Effective Biodiversity Conservation

Colombian ecosystems maintain key ecological processes that support thousands of species, including human beings. With the expansion of the country’s population, and the implementation of a government’s development plan based on an economy centred on extraction patterns, the conservation of these ecosystems is at serious risk. It is a priority to implement effective strategies that ensure the protection of the country’s biological diversity as well as the mitigation and prevention of threats and to contribute to its proper use. Colombia’s development strategies as well as its peoples’ wellbeing depend on the suitable condition of its natural assets. The identification of surrogates of conservation, the formulation of conservation goals, the prioritization of key areas and the formulation of conservation strategies based on the preservation, restoration and sustainable use of the territory and its biodiversity are proposed for 60% of the emerged land (~ 700,000 Km2). This research aims at giving proper guidelines to manage the territory and finding common points between development and biodiversity conservation, as well as to use this input for the development and implementation of a National Decision-making Support System (DSS) that will potentially have an impact on Colombia’s environmental policies and territorial planning schemes.

Parotid gland adenocarcinoma is commonly a tumor of low malignancy and low incidence worldwide. The reported case shows the rapid progression of this tumor in an elderly patient and infrequent effects, such as a presentation of facial edema not commonly described in the medical literature. Patient was admitted to hospital in November 2019 with secretion and partial hearing loss in the right ear and infiltrative and stone lesion with initial skin ulceration in the right cervical region. After 42 days, he returned and was admitted to the intensive care unit with significant swelling of the face, hardened and hyperemic neck, difficulty in speech and inability to open the eye. He presented changes in the mobility of the speech and hearing organs, reduced laryngeal mobility, vocal changes, speech with altered articulation and severe oropharyngeal dysphagia with risk of bronchoaspiration. The patient was diagnosed in September 2019 with a parotid tumor (salivary gland adenocarcinoma T4). The medical team requested computed tomography, computed tomography angiography of the chest and cervical vessels and computed tomography of the neck, in addition to evaluation by the head and neck surgery service and general surgery. After analyzing the results, the medical team suggested a hypothesis of tumor invasion that could result in obstruction of local lymphatic drainage, something unusual in the evolution of this type of tumor. In addition, it was not possible to adhere to radiotherapy treatment due to the extent of the lesion and there was also no confirmation of metastases. The reported case shows us that parotid gland adenocarcinoma, when diagnosed in an advanced stage, can limit the approach to treatment. It was chosen in agreement with the family to proceed with palliative care without invasive measures. Palliative care may be the best option for cases like this, bringing some comfort to the patient and his family.
