Convergence in leaf phenology traits of two understorey ferns in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula

Aims Plants control leaf phenology to maximize annual photosynthetic *** ferns play an important ecological role in many habitats,especially forests,their phenology traits have been poorly ***,we investigate the leaf phenology of two ferns of the forest understorey and analyse the relationship between the timing of leaf emergence and spore dispersal and the effect of between-year climatic *** We compared the leafing and sporing phenologies of two ferns with very large(>2 m),overwintering leaves:Culcita macrocarpa and Woodwardia *** regularly monitored individuals of six popu-lations in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula during a 3-year *** studied eight phenology variables:leafing start date,leafing end date,leaf expansion time,number of new leaves per individual,between-individual synchrony,within-individual synchrony,percentage of fertile leaves and spore release *** also determined leaf mass per area(LMA)and gathered data on air temperature and *** findings Both *** and *** produce few leaves(~2 leaves individual−1 year−1),which expand simultaneously for a very long period(from midwinter to early summer),are retained for more than 1 year(37 and 19 months,respectively)and have relatively high *** traits,together with large leaf size,have also been found in seed plants from the forest understorey and represent adap-tations to this light-limited *** of both study ferns are simultaneously released in late winter,with little between-year variation caused by differences in air *** remarkable similarity between species suggests that the convergence in tim-ing of leaf emergence favours the convergence in timing of spore dispersal.

Using microscopic video data measures for driver behavior analysis during adverse winter weather:opportunities and challenges

This paper presents a driver behavior analysis using microscopic video data measures including vehicle speed, lane-changing ratio, and time to collision. An analytical framework was developed to evaluate the effect of adverse winter weather conditions on highway driving behavior based on automated （computer） and manual methods. The research was conducted through two case studies. The first case study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of applying an au- tomated approach to extracting driver behavior data based on 15 video recordings obtained in the winter 2013 at three dif- ferent locations on the Don Valley Parkway in Toronto, Canada. A comparison was made between the automated approach and manual approach, and issues in collecting data using the automated approach under winter conditions were identified. The second case study was based on high quality data collected in the winter 2014, at a location on Highway 25 in Montreal, Canada. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the automated analytical framework in analyzing driver behavior, as well as evaluating the impact of adverse winter weather conditions on driver behavior. This approach could be applied to evaluate winter maintenance strategies and crash risk on highways during adverse winter weather conditions.

Objective:To improve the knowledge on the metabolite composition of Endopleura uchi bark,concerning phenolic compounds,and to evaluate some of its biological capacities for further possible exploitation in food and pharmaceutical industries associated to their healthpromoting ***:Two different extracts(infusion and hydroethanolic) were studied concerning phenolic composition and biological ***:five compounds were determined by HPLC-DAD,being bergenin the major *** general way,infusion presents a greater richness in these *** antioxidant,***,α-glucosidase and antibacterial activity were checked by in vitro assays.A dose-dependent response was noticed against DPPH,superoxide and nitric oxide radicals,acetylcholinesterase,butyrylcholinesterase and against α-glucosidase inhibitory *** capacity of both extracts was investigated against Gram-positive and Gramnegative bacteria,being more effective against the first *** concentrations of infusion extract tested here revealed that is non-toxic for intestinal(Caco-2) cells ***:The results suggest that the extracts of Endopleura uchi may be interesting for incorporating in pharmaceutical preparations for human health,since it can suppress hyperglycaemia and inhibit cholinesteases,and or as food additive due to its antiradical and antibacterial activities.

The global outbreak of coronavirus infectious disease-2019(COVID-19)draws attentions in the transport and spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)in aerosols,wastewater,surface water and solid *** pathogens eventually enter the subsurface system,e.g.,soils in the vadose zone and groundwater in the aquifers,they might survive for a prolonged period of time owing to the uniqueness of subsurface *** addition,pathogens can transport in groundwater and contaminate surrounding drinking water sources,possessing long-term and concealed risks to human *** work critically reviews the influential factors of pathogen migration,unravelling the impacts of pathogenic characteristics,vadose zone physiochemical properties and hydrological variables on the migration of typical pathogens in subsurface *** assessment algorithm and two rating/weighting schemes are proposed to evaluate the migration abilities and risks of pathogens in subsurface *** there is still no evidence about the presence and distribution of SARS-CoV-2 in the vadose zones and aquifers,this study also discusses the migration potential and behavior of SARS-CoV-2 viruses in subsurface environment,offering prospective clues and suggestions for its potential risks in drinking water and effective prevention and control from hydrogeological points of view.

Species of Ophiognomonia are leaf-inhabiting endophytes,pathogens,and saprobes that infect plants in the families Betulaceae,fagaceae,Juglandaceae,Lauraceae,Malvaceae,Platanaceae,Rosaceae,Salicaceae,and *** on extensive collecting,this speciesrich genus is now known to have a world wide distribution in primarily temperate areas,although some species are known from the *** of DNA sequences from three markers including guanine nucleotide-binding protein subunit beta-like protein(MS204),translation elongation factor 1α(tef-1α),and the ITS region including ITS1,5.8 S rDNA and ITS2 regions(ITS)were used to define phylogenetic species in *** plant association correlated with these ***-five new species of Ophiognomonia and two new combinations are proposed with descriptions and *** addition,descriptions and illustrations are provided for 12 other species of Ophiognomonia.A key is provided to the 45 currently accepted species of *** disposition of additional names in Ophiognomonia is also discussed.

Classification of low-density EEG for epileptic seizures by energy and fractal features based on EMD

We are here to present a new method for the classification of epileptic seizures from electroencephalogram(EEG) *** consists of applying empirical mode decomposition(EMD) to extract the most relevant intrinsic mode functions(IMfs) and subsequent computation of the Teager and instantaneous energy,Higuchi and Petrosian fractal dimension,and detrended fluctuation analysis(DfA) for each *** validated the method using a public dataset of 24 subjects with EEG signals from 22 channels and showed that it is possible to classify the epileptic seizures,even with segments of six seconds and a smaller number of channels(e.g.,an accuracy of0.93 using five channels).We were able to create a general machine-learning-based model to detect epileptic seizures of new subjects using epileptic-seizure data from various subjects,after reducing the number of instances,based on the k-means algorithm.

Capillary hydrodynamic fractionation（CHDf） with turbidity detection at a single wavelength is an analytical technique that is often used for sizing the sub-micrometric particles of hydrophobic *** article investigates three sources of errors that affect the particle size distribution（PSD） estimated by CHDf：diameter calibration errors,uncertainties in the particle refractive index（PRI）,and instrumental broadening（IB）.The study is based on simulated and experimental examples that involve unimodal and bimodal *** errors in the diameter calibration curve can produce important deviations in the number average diameter due to systematic shifts suffered by the PSD *** uncertainties in the PRI are unimportant in the analysis of unimodal PSDs,but in the specific case of bimodal PSDs,errors in the PRI can strongly affect the estimated number concentration of each *** typical IB correction（based on the IB function estimated from narrow standards） produces slightly erroneous average diameters but can lead to PSDs with underestimated widths and distorted *** practice,the three investigated sources of errors can be present simultaneously,and uncertainties in the average diameters,the shape and width of the PSD,and the number concentration of the PSD modes are unavoidable.

The usage of renewable energies,including geothermal energy,is expanding rapidly *** low efficiency of geothermal cycles has consistently highlighted the importance of recovering heat loss for these *** paper proposes a combined power generation cycle(single flash geothermal cycle with trans-critical CO_(2) cycle)and simulates in the EES(Engineering Equation Solver)*** results show that the design parameters of the proposed system are significantly improved compared to the BASIC single flash ***,the proposed approach is optimized using the genetic algorithm and the Nelder-Mead Simplex *** pressure,steam turbine output pressure,and CO_(2) turbine inlet pressure are three assumed variable parameters,and exergy efficiency is the target *** the default operating mode,the system exergy efficiency was 32%,increasing to 39%using the genetic algorithm and 37%using the Nelder-Mead method.

Gain in polycrystalline Nd-doped alumina: leveraging length scales to create a new class of high-energy, short pulse, tunable laser materials

Traditionally accepted design paradigms dictate that only optically isotropic(cubic)crystal structures with high equilibrium solubilities of optically active ions are suitable for polycrystalline laser gain *** restriction of symmetry is due to light scattering caused by randomly oriented anisotropic crystals,whereas the solubility problem arises from the need for sufficient active dopants in the *** criteria limit material choices and exclude materials that have superior thermo-mechanical properties than state-of-the-art laser ***(Al_(2)O_(3))is an ideal example;it has a higher fracture strength and thermal conductivity than today’s gain materials,which could lead to revolutionary laser ***,alumina has uniaxial optical proprieties,and the solubility of rare earths(REs)is two-to-three orders of magnitude lower than the dopant concentrations in typical RE-based gain *** present new strategies to overcome these obstacles and demonstrate gain in a RE-doped alumina(Nd:Al_(2)O_(3))for the first *** key insight relies on tailoring the crystallite size to other important length scales—the wavelength of light and interatomic dopant distances,which minimize optical losses and allow successful Nd *** result is a laser gain medium with a thermo-mechanical figure of merit of R_(s)~19,500 Wm^(−1) a 24-fold and 19,500-fold improvements over the high-energy-laser leaders Nd:YAG(R_(s)~800Wm^(−1))and Nd:Glass(R_(s)~1Wm^(−1)),***,the emission bandwidth of Nd:Al_(2)O_(3) is broad:~13 *** successful demonstration of gain and high bandwidth in a medium with superior R_(s) can lead to the development of lasers with previously unobtainable highpeak powers,short pulses,tunability,and high-duty cycles.

Chloroplasts and mitochondria genomes contain a few dozen genes required for gene expression, photosynthesis, and the electron transport chain. However, proteomic and bioinformatic studies suggest that approximately 2000 and 2600 proteins are located in plant mitochondria and chloroplasts, respectively; most of them are encoded by nuclear genes, synthesized in the cytoplasm, and targeted to organelles. Despite the simplicity of organelle genomes, their transcriptional regulation is complex and can only be partially explained by currently known transcriptional machinery components, suggesting that additional unidentified regulatory factors exist （Liere et al., 2011）.
