K2Ti6O13 whiskers were synthesized by conventional sol-gel method, sono-chemical assisted and microwave assisted sol-gel method in order to obtain catalysts with dif.erent particle sizes and to modif. their optical, textural and electrochemical properties. These modif.cations improved their photocatalytic activity f.r H2 evolution and CO2 photo-reduction. Long K2Ti6O13 whiskers prepared by ultrasound assisted sol-gel method are the most active photocatalysts f.r the hydrogen evolution reaction using pure water as reactant (U-SG, 10,065 μmol g^-1). In contrast, an opposite behavior was observed using a mixture of.ethanol-water, where the highest activity was achieved by the shortest and less crystalline K2Ti6O13 whiskers (C-SG, 3,2871 μmol g^-1). In case of.CO2 photo-reduction, long whiskers that were also prepared by the sono-chemical assisted sol-gel method were the most active to transf.rm CO2 to f.rmaldehyde, methane, methanol and hydrogen. The Ef. value of.this catalyst is located very close to the potential f.r f.rmaldehyde production and f.vors the selectivity to this organic product.

In Brazil, intense coal exploitation activities have led to environmental deterioration, including soil mortif.cation, water contamination, loss of.ecosystem, and atmospheric contamination. In addition,considerable quantities of.sulf.r-rich residues are lef. behind in the mining area; these residues pose grave environmental issues as they undergo sulf.de oxidation reactions. When sulf.r oxides come in contact with water, extreme acid leachate is produced with great proportions of.sulf.te, and hazardous elements(HEs), which are identif.ed as coal drainage(CMD). CMD is an environmental pollution challenge, particularly in countries with historic or active coal mines. To prevent CMD f.rmation or its migration, the source must be controlled; however, this may not be f.asible at many locations. In such scenarios, the mine water should be collected, treated, and discharged. In this study, data f.om 2005 to2010 was gathered on the geochemistry of.11 CMD discharges f.om ten dif.erent mines. There are several concerns and questions on the f.rmation of.nanominerals in mine acid drainage and on their reactions and interf.ces. The detailed mineralogical and geochemical data presented in this paper were derived f.om previous studies on the coal mine areas in Brazil. Oxyhydroxides, sulf.tes, and nanoparticles in these areas possibly go through structural transf.rmations depending on their size and f.rmation conditions. The geochemistry of.f.-precipitates(such as jarosite, goethite, and hematite) existent in the CMD-generating coal areas and those that could be considered as a potential source of.hazardous elements(HEs)(e.g., Cr) were also studied because these precipitates are relatively stable in extremely low pH conditions. The graf. vs tumor ef.ect produced by the inf.sion of.allo-reactive lymphocytes is considered to be the main mechanism of.action in the eradication of.tumor cells only reported in allogeneic stem cell transplantation. We present a case of.a lymphoma patient inf.sed with his collected bystander lymphocytes f.om is stem cell autograf. af.er f.iling to collect enough stem cells to proceed with autologous stem cells transplantation, resulting in tumor response with no treatment related toxicity. This case illustrates the concept of.autologous lymphocyte inf.sion, suggesting the possibility of.an autograf. vs tumor ef.ect, as an ef.ort to parallel donor lymphocyte inf.sion in allogeneic stem cell transplantation to create a graf. vs tumor ef.ect by increasing donor lymphocytes in the patient.

AIM: To investigate the pRb expression in a large group of.patients with history of.chronic exposure to the main risk f.ctors f.r development of.squamous cell carcinoma of.the esophagus. METHODS: One hundred and seventy asymptomatic individuals at high risk f.r esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (consumption of.more than 80 g of.ethanol and 10 cigarettes/d f.r at least 10 years) underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with biopsies of.the esophageal mucosa. As a control group, specimens of.esophageal mucosa obtained f.om 20 healthy subjects were also studied. Immunohistochemical assessment of.the tissues was perf.rmed using a monoclonal antibody anti-pRB protein. RESULTS: Absence of.the pRB staining, indicating loss of.RB f.nction, was observed in 33 (19.4%) of.the individuals at risk f.r esophageal cancer, but in none of.the healthy controls (P f.pRb expression increased in a stepwise f.shion according to the severity of.the histological f.ndings (P f.ndings suggest that abnormal expression of.the pRB protein may be implicated in the process of.esophageal carcinogenesis. Additional studies are warranted to def.ne the role of.the pRBprotein as a biomarker f.r development of.esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in individuals at high risk f.r this malignancy.

Programmed cell death occurs in browning explants of.f.axinus mandshurica during somatic embryogenesis, but the underlying mechanism is unclear. In this study, single cotyledons of.zygotic embryos of.f. mandshurica were used as explants. Mitochondrial structure and f.nction, caspase-3-like protease activity, hydrogen peroxide metabolism, and nitric oxide accumulation induced by high concentrations of.sucrose and plant growth regulators were studied. The results show that plant growth regulators induced somatic embryogenesis and also promoted explant browning. High sucrose concentrations had similar ef.ects. High concentrations of.sucrose and plant growth regulators led to the accumulation of.hydrogen peroxide and nitric oxide which induced changes in mitochondrial structure and f.nction such as modif.cations in mitochondrial morphology, increased membrane permeability, decreased membrane potential, and the release of.cytochrome c into the cytoplasm. An increase in caspase-3-like protease activity triggered programmed cell death in some browning explant cells. During somatic embryogenesis there were increased activities of.superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase, which are associated with hydrogen peroxide metabolism and jointly maintain reactive oxygen species levels. Intracellular nitric oxide synthase and nitrate reductase activities were not signif.cantly correlated with nitric oxide content. Instead, intracellular nitric oxide may be derived f.om non-enzymatic reactions. Our results indicate that hydrogen peroxide and nitric oxide may f.nction as signals, playing key roles in somatic embryogenesis and programmed cell death of.explant cells of.f. mandshurica. The interaction between nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species determines the occurrence of.programmed cell death in explant cells;somatic embryogenesis and programmed cell death are positively regulated by hydrogen peroxide. However, the regulation of.nitric oxide is complex.
