Nanomineralogy of evaporative precipitation of efflorescent compounds from coal mine drainage

Efflorescent nanophases(NPs) are found as a transitory accumulation of potentially hazardous elements(PHEs),particularly in tropical climates. The central objective of this study was to investigate the distribution of PHEs with NPs through the evaporative formation structures(EFS) of enormously PHEs-rich coal-mine drainages(CMD). The EFS were studied in natural coal mine drainage for five months in order to determine their geochemical and ecological structures and to assess their position in the reduction of PHEs in nature. The largest coal-fired power plant in South America, located in south Brazil, is used as an example of such a problem. In this work, a novel methodology for the analysis of PHEs in CMD precipitates is proposed for this affected coal *** analytical method, combining X-ray Diffraction(XrD) and advanced electron microscopies, shows the importance of nanomineralogy in understanding different circumstances of coal contamination. Several ultrafinenanoparticles(UNPs) were identified in the sampled soils and river sediments together with the PHEs. A decrease in PHEs was identified in association with UNPs. However, further investigations are required with regard to the mobility of PHEs in water, atmosphere, soils, and sediments. The EPS was thoroughly studied, acquiring suitable understanding with investigational facts for Ca and Fe-sulphates, pickeringite, and several amorphous phases.

Coal is the most abundant fossil fuel in the world. Because of the growth of coal mining, coal-fired power plants and coal-burning industries, the increase of the emission of particulates(coarse, fine or ultrafine)is of great concern. There is a relationship between increasing human morbidity and mortality and progressive environmental air pollution caused by these types of particles. Thus, the knowledge of the physico-chemical composition and ambient concentrations of coal-derived nanoparticles will improve pollution control strategy. Given the current importance of this area of research, the advanced characterization of this coal combustion-derived nanoparticles/nanominerals as well as hazardous elements is likely to be one of the hottest research fields in coming days. In this review, we try to compile the existing knowledge on coal-derived nanoparticles/nanominerals and discuss the advanced level of characterization techniques for future research. This review also provides some of aspects of health risks associated with exposure to ambient nanoparticles. In addition, the presence of some of the hazardous elements in coal and coal combustion activities is also reviewed.

Experience with the surgical treatment of hepatic hydatidosis: Case series with follow-up

AIM: To describe patient characteristics and the results of surgical treatment for hepatic hydatidosis (HH) in the Hospital Hernán Henríquez Aravena from December 2001 to March 2005. METHODS: Subjects older than 16 years with suspected HH were included based on the clinical picture and radiological studies. Variables examined included clinical and laboratory aspects, outcome, features of the parasite and surgical aspects. Descriptive statistics were used, calculating central tendency, dispersion and extreme tendency. rESULTS: The series was comprised of 122 patients, with an average age of 44 ± 16.9 years. The most frequently used surgical technique was subtotal cys-tectomy in 90% of the patients, followed by hepatic resection (hepatectomy, segmentectomy and subsegmentectomy) in 5%. In 2%, a combination of subtotal cystectomy and segmentectomy was performed. In addition, 28% of the series presented complications in the postoperative period and mortality was 2%. CONCLUSION: The most frequently used surgical technique for HH was subtotal cystectomy and the morbidity and mortality rates in this Chilean series are comparable to other national and international series.

The applications of bionic methodology developed by the Laboratory of Design and Material Selection as basis in the creation of junction elements were demonstrated. These elements favor the application of Ecodesign in reference to the effectiveness of product dismount aiming the reduction of ambient impact in all its phases of use. The creation, the development and the confection of new junction elements were described, and case studies of new products developed specifically with this purpose were presented.

The aim of the present work was to present the outcomes of the patients with Y-chromosome microdeletions treated by intracytoplasmic sperm injection （ICSI）, either using fresh （TESE） or frozen-thawed （TESE-C） testicular sperm and ejaculated sperm （EJAC）. The originality of this work resides in the comparisons between the different types of Y-microdeletions （AZFa, AZFb, and AZFc） and treatments, with detailed demographic, stimulation, embryological, clinical, and newborn （NB） outcomes. Of 125 patients with Y-microdeletions, 33 patients presented severe oligozoospermia （18 performed ICSI with ejaculated sperm） and 92 secretory azoospermia （65 went for TESE with 40 having successful sperm retrieval and performed ICSI）. There were 51 TESE treatment cycles and 43 TESE-C treatment cycles, with a birth of 19 NB （2 in AZFa/TESE-C, 12 in AZFc/TESE, and 5 in AZFc/TESE-C）. Of the 29 EJAC cycles, there was a birth of 8 NB （in AZFc）. In TESE and EJAC cycles, there were no significant differences in embryological and clinical parameters. In TESE-C cycles, there was a significant lower oocyte maturity rate, embryo cleavage rate and mean number of embryos transferred in AZFb, and a higher mean number of oocytes and lower fertilization rate in AZFc. In conclusion, although patients with AZFc microdeletions presented a high testicular sperm recovery rate and acceptable clinical outcomes, cases with AZFa and AZFb microdeletions presented a poor prognosis. Due to the reported heredity of microdeletions, patients should be informed about the infertile consequences on NB and the possibility of using preimplantation genetic diagnosis for female sex selection.

BACKGrOUND Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) represents the sixteenth most frequent cancer in Argentina. The rise of new therapeutic modalities in intermediate-advanced HCC opens up a new paradigm for the treatment of *** To describe real-life treatments performed in patients with intermediateadvanced HCC before the approval of new systemic *** This longitudinal observational cohort study was conducted between 2009 and2016 in 14 different regional hospitals from Argentina. Included subjects had intermediate-advanced Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer(BCLC) HCC stages(BCLC B to D). Primary end point analyzed was survival, which was assessed for each BCLC stage from the date of treatment until last patient follow-up or *** Meier survival curves and Cox regression analysis were performed, with hazard ratios(Hr) calculations and 95% confidence intervals(95%CI).rESULTS From 327 HCC patients, 41% were BCLC stage B, 20% stage C and 39% stage *** median survival were 15 mo(IQr 5-26 mo), 5 mo(IQr 2-13 mo)and 3 mo(IQr 1-13 mo)(P respectively. Among BCLC-B patients(n =135), 57% received TACE with a median number of 2 sessions(IQr 1-3 sessions).Survival was significantly better in BCLC-B patients treated with TACE Hr =0.29(CI: 0.21-0.40) than those without TACE. After tumor reassessment by rECIST 1.1 criteria following the first TACE, patients with complete response achieved longer survival (Hr = 0.15(CI: 0.04-0.56, P = 0.005))Eighty-two patients were treated with sorafenib, mostly BCLC-B and C(87.8%). However,12.2% were BCLC-D. Median survival with sorafenib was 4.5 mo(IQr 2.3-11.7 mo);which was lower among BCLC-D patients 3.2 mo(IQr 2.0-14.1 mo). A total of 36 BCLC-B patients presented tumor progression after TACE. In these patients,treatment with sorafenib presented better survival when compared to those patients who received sorafenib without prior TACE [Hr = 0.26(CI: 0.09-0.71);P= 0.013].CONCLUSION In this real setting, our results we
