Chitin powder and chitin-aerogel were prepared from shrimp wastes and used to uptake Y^(3+)from aqueous solutions and concentrate this rare earth element from phosphogypsum(PG).Chitin aerogel displays a specific surface area of 945 m^(2)/g,while chitin powder is 3.6 m^(2)/g,which largely influences its adsorption *** the adsorption in synthetic solutions,the effect of pH on Y^(3+)removal is strong for chitin powder *** contrast,no big pH influence was detected for chitin *** interactions and chelation can highlight the proposed mechanism of Y^(3+)on chitin adsorbents for the powder and ***,in addition to these interactions,pore filling/pore diffusion is the main mechanism of Y^(3+)removal in the chitin *** aerogel is efficient in concentrating 8 times the Y^(3+)from PG,a very complex *** complex chitin aerogel-Y^(3+)can be a secondary source of rare earth elements for other applications.

The application of cleaner and effective technologies can be expanded to management and control, pollution mitigation and valorization of waste. In this Special Issue of Geoscience frontiers, we present contributions addressing the interactions of CoVID-19 in relation to environment and human health.

Air pollution has become a major problem in urban areas due to increasing industrialization and *** this study ambient concentrations of PM1 and metal concentrations as well as source contributions were identified and quantified by using Positive Matrix factorization(PMf)in receptor modeling in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre,*** PM1 samples were collected on PTfE filters from December 2012 to December 2014 in two sampling *** ion and trace element concentrations were *** average concentrations were 12.8 and 15.2μg/m^(3) for Canoas and Sapucaia do Sul sites,*** ion contributions of PM1 were secondary pollutants such as sulfate and *** elements,especially Cu,Pb,Zn,Cd,and Ni also made important contributions which are directly associated with anthropogenic *** results show significantly higher levels in winter than in *** of the PM1 and the analyzed PM species and elements originated from anthropogenic sources,especially road traffic,combustion processes and industrial activities,which are grouped in 7 major contributing sources.A back-trajectory analysis showed that the long-range transport of pollutants was not relevant in relation to the contribution to PM1 and metal *** work highlights the importance of urban planning to reduce human health exposure to traffic and industrial emissions,combined with awareness-raising actions for citizens concerning the impact of indoor sources.

The separation of rare earth elements using diatomite M45 from aqueous solutions was *** experimental isotherms for the adsorption of trivalent lanthanum,cerium,and neodymium cations on this adsorbent were quantified under strongly acidic conditions(pH 2)at 298-328 *** adsorption equilibria of these earth elements were analyzed using two statistical physics models(homogeneous and heterogeneous monolayer models).The results show that the adsorption of these ions implies a multiionic mechanism,which is ***-containing functional groups are responsible for the adsorption of these rare-earth elements on the diatomite surface.A heterogeneous statistical physics model confirms that two Si-based functional groups participate in the separation of these *** calculated adsorption capacities at saturation follow the order:neodymium>cerium>*** interaction energies range from 28600 to 40100 J/mol,indicating physical adsorption on diatomite *** study demonstrates that diatomite M45 is a promising separation medium that can be used for the recovery of REEs dissolved in aqueous solutions via adsorption.

Air pollution has become an important issue,especially in Caribbean urban areas,and,particulate matter(PM)emitted by different natural and anthropogenic sources causes environmental and health *** this work,we studied the concentrations of PM_(10) and PM_(2.5) sources in an industrial and port urban area in the Caribbean region of *** samples were collected within 48-h periods between April and october 2018 by using a Partisol 2000 i-D *** geochemical characterization was performed by X-ray fluorescence(XRf)***,ionic species and black carbon(BC)were quantified by ion chromatography and reflectance spectroscopy,*** the Positive Matrix factorization(PMf)receptor model,the contributions of PM sources were *** average concentration of PM_(10) was 46.6±16.2μg/m^(3),with high concentrations of Cl and *** PM_(2.5),the average concentration was 12.0±3.2μg/m^(3),and the most abundant components were BC,S,and *** receptor model identified five sources for PM_(10) and PM_(2.5).for both fractions,the contributions of marine sea spray,re-suspended soil,and vehicular traffic were *** addition,PM_(2.5) included two mixed sources were found to be fuel oil combustion with fertilizer industry emissions,and secondary aerosol sources with building construction ***,PM_(10) was found to also include building construction emissions with re-suspended soil,and metallurgical industry *** obtained geochemical atmospheric results are important for the implementation of strategies for the continuous improvement of the air quality of the Caribbean region.

This work examines the environmental and geochemical impact of recycled aggregate concrete production with properties representative for structural *** environmental influence of cement content,aggregate production,transportation,and waste landfilling is analysed by undertaking a life cycle assessment and considering a life cycle inventory largely specific for the *** obtain a detailed insight into the optimum life cycle parameters,a sensitivity study is carried out in which supplementary cementitious materials,different values of natural-to-recycled aggregate content ratio and case-specific transportation distances were *** results show that carbon emissions were between 323 and 332 kgCo_(2)e per cubic metre of cement only natural aggregate *** values can be reduced by up to 17%by replacing 25%of the cement with fly *** contrast,carbon emissions can increase when natural coarse aggregates are replaced by recycled aggregates in proportions of 50%and 100%,and transportation is not included in ***,the concrete with 50%recycled aggregate presented lower increase,only 0.3%and 3.4%for normal and high strength concrete,*** some cases,the relative contribution of transportation to the total carbon emissions increased when cement was replaced by fly ash in proportions of 25%,and case-specific transportation distances were *** absolute values,the concrete mixes with 100%recycled aggregates and 25%fly ash had lower carbon emissions than concrete with cement and natural aggregates *** environmental benefits can be obtained when the transportation distances of fly ash are relatively short(15–25 km)and the cement replacement by fly ash is equal or higher than 25%,considering that the mechanical properties are adequate for practical *** observations from this paper show that recycled aggregate concrete with strength characteristics representative for structural members can have lowe

The Benue Trough Basin (BTB) of Nigeria is geologically and geo-morphologically subdivided into upper,middle, and lower segments. The BTB is the subject of geological research due to its rich coal depositsthat have the potential for oil and gas. The purpose of the present study is to examine the origins,depositional environments, and thermal history of the selected coals and the processes that influencetheir quality. Coal samples from different open cast coal mines in the middle BTB were examined usingproximate and ultimate, x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray fluorescence (XRf), laser ablation induced coupledplasma (LA-ICPMS), and petrographical analyses. The coal samples contained mainly quartz, kaolinite,and organic carbon. The XRD spectra peaks revealed the triclinic and monoclinic structure of kaolin. TheSio2/Al2o3 ratios confirmed the dominance of quartz and kaolinite. The Ni/Co versus V/Cr, Cu/Zn, and V/Mo values in the studied coals suggest oxic depositional environments, whereas the V/(Ni þ V) and V/(V þ Cr) values indicate oxic to suboxic conditions. The Ce/Ce* values are slightly below 1, which indicates a suboxic depositional environment. Maceral texture is indicative of transformations from subbituminous to high volatile C or B bituminous coal. The maceral components and mineral matter(10%) of the studied coals imply deposition in the planar margin mire, and a river system of planarmargin mire environments, respectively. The high gelification index (GI) and tissue preservation index(TPI) values indicate peat accumulation developed within a wet forest swamp. The ternary diagram ofthe maceral component suggests deposition in a wet moor environment with intermittent moderate tohigh flooding episodes. The studied coals are sub-hydrous vitrinite inferring hydrogen-poor and thermally immature characteristics. The low V and Ni contents, low H/C and high o/C, indicate Type IIIterrestrial organic matter with the potential to generate gaseous hydrocarbons. The investi

Efflorescent nanophases(NPs) are found as a transitory accumulation of potentially hazardous elements(PHEs),particularly in tropical climates. The central objective of this study was to investigate the distribution of PHEs with NPs through the evaporative formation structures(EfS) of enormously PHEs-rich coal-mine drainages(CMD). The EfS were studied in natural coal mine drainage for five months in order to determine their geochemical and ecological structures and to assess their position in the reduction of PHEs in nature. The largest coal-fired power plant in South America, located in south Brazil, is used as an example of such a problem. In this work, a novel methodology for the analysis of PHEs in CMD precipitates is proposed for this affected coal *** analytical method, combining X-Ray Diffraction(XRD) and advanced electron microscopies, shows the importance of nanomineralogy in understanding different circumstances of coal contamination. Several ultrafinenanoparticles(UNPs) were identified in the sampled soils and river sediments together with the PHEs. A decrease in PHEs was identified in association with UNPs. However, further investigations are required with regard to the mobility of PHEs in water, atmosphere, soils, and sediments. The EPS was thoroughly studied, acquiring suitable understanding with investigational facts for Ca and fe-sulphates, pickeringite, and several amorphous phases.
