Green synthesis of glycolic acid through the electrocatalytic reduction of oxalic acid over black TiO_(2): An experimental and theoretical study

Herein,we present the electrocatalytic four-electron hydrogenation of oxalic acid into glycolic acid using black TiO_(2)as an *** acid is an abundant compound found in several sources of organic *** results showed a high selectivity of black TiO_(2)toward glycolic acid,with the formation of glyoxylic acid being the rate-limiting step (glyoxylic acid is the two-electron intermediate).The highest Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 69.6%±8.3% was achieved at 10.2 mA cm^(-2)in 4 h of electrolysis using an H-type cell operated at room temperature,with 50.2%±3.8% of oxalic acid conversion (degradation kinetic constant k=0.0042±0.0001 min-1),58.8%±7.0%of reaction yield and 1.2±0.18 g L-1of glycolic acid production.A theoretical model of black TiO_(2)coming from anatase TiO_(2)was implemented by introducing Ti3+defects,which gave black TiO_(2)the theoretical capability to easily transform oxalic acid into glycolic acid as experimentally *** reaction mechanism was supported and described in detail by density functional theory calculations,which revealed that surface Ti^(3+)states were the main catalytic *** is the first time that a detailed step-by-step mechanism at the atomic level has been proposed for this electrocatalytic reaction,which represents a valuable contribution to the understanding of this process of high energy/environmental *** is also the first time that black TiO_(2)has been used as an electrocatalyst for this sustainable process.

Dependence of dynamic contour and Goldmann applanation tonometries on peripheral corneal thickness

AIM：To determine the effects of peripheral corneal thickness（PCT）on dynamic contour tonometry（DCT）and Goldmann applanation tonometry（GAT）.METHODS：A cross-sectional *** created a software which calculates the corneal contour（CC）as a function of the radius from the corneal apex to each pixel of the *** software generates a central circumference with a radius of 1 mm and the remainder of the cornea is segmented in 5 rings concentric with corneal apex being its diameter not constant around the corneal circumference as a consequence of the irregular CC but keeping constant the diameter of each ring in each direction of the *** was determined as the mean thickness of the most eccentric *** weighted scatterplot smoothing（LOWESS）regression was used to determine the pattern of the relationship between PCT and both DCT and GAT ***,two multivariable linear regression models were *** each of them,the dependant variable was intraocular pressure（IOP）as determined using GAT and DCT *** both of the models the predictive variable was PCT though LOWESS regression pattern was used to model the relationship between the dependant variables and the predictor *** and sex were also introduced control variables along with their first-degree interactions with *** outcome measures include amount of IOP variation explained through regression models（R2）and regression coefficients（B）.RESULTS：Subjects included 109 eyes of 109 healthy *** regression suggested that a 2nd-degree polynomial would be suitable to model the relationshipbetween both DCT and GAT with *** PCT was introduced in both models as a linear and quadratic *** age nor sex nor interactions were statistically significant in both *** GAT model,R2was 17.14%（F=9.02;P=0.0002）,PCT linear term B was-1.163（95%CI：-1.163,-0.617）.PCT quadratic term B was 0.00081（95%CI：0.00043,0.00118）.For DCT model R2was 14.28%（F=9.29;P=0.0002

Reconstruction after pancreatoduodenectomy:Pancreatojejunostomy vs pancreatogastrostomy

Pancreatic surgeons try to find the best technique for reconstruction after pancreatoduodenectomy(PD) in order to decrease postoperative complications,mainly pancreatic fistulas(PF).In this work,we compare the two most frequent techniques of reconstruction after PD,pancreatojejunostomy(PJ) and pancreatogastrostomy(PG),in order to determine which of the two is better.A systematic review of the literature was performed,including major meta-analysis articles,clinical randomized trials,systematic reviews,and retrospective studies.A total of 64 articles were finally *** and PG are usually responsible for most of the postoperative morbidity,mainly due to the onset of PF,being considered a major trigger of life-threatening complications such as intra-abdominal abscess and *** included systematic reviews reported a significant difference only in the incidence of intraabdominal collections favouring ***,delayed gastric emptying and mortality were not *** there was heterogeneity between these studies,all were conducted in specialized centers by highly experienced surgeons,and the surgical care was likely to be similar for all the *** disadvantages of PG include an increased incidence of delayed gastric emptying and of main pancreatic duct obstruction due to overgrowth by the gastric *** function appears to be worse after PG than after PJ,resulting in severe atrophic changes in the remnant *** on the type of PJ or PG used,the PF rate and other complications can also be *** best method to deal with the pancreatic stump after PD remains *** choice of method of pancreatic anastomosis could be based on individual experience and on the surgeon's preference and adherence to basic principles such as good exposure and *** conclusion,up to now none of the techniques can be considered superior or be recommended as standard for reconstruction after PD.

The society in the digital transformation era demands new decision schemes such as e-democracy or based on social *** novel decision schemes require the participation of many experts/decision makers/stakeholders in the decision *** a result,large-scale group decision making(LSGDM)has attracted the attention of many researchers in the last decade and many studies have been conducted in order to face the challenges associated with the ***,this paper aims at reviewing the most relevant studies about LSGDM,identifying the most profitable research trends and analyzing them from a critical point of *** do so,the Web of Science database has been consulted by using different *** these results a total of 241 contributions were found and a selection process regarding language,type of contribution and actual relation with the studied topic was then carried *** 87 contributions finally selected for this review have been analyzed from four points of view that have been highly remarked in the topic,such as the preference structure in which decision-makers’opinions are modeled,the group decision rules used to define the decision making process,the techniques applied to verify the quality of these models and their applications to real world problems ***,a critical analysis of the main limitations of the existing proposals is ***,taking into account these limitations,new research lines for LSGDM are proposed and the main challenges are stressed out.

Anatomical characterization of central, apical and minimal corneal thickness

·AIM: To anatomically locate the points of minimum corneal thickness and central corneal thickness(pupil center) in relation to the corneal apex.·METHODS: Observational, cross-sectional study, 299 healthy volunteers. Thickness at the corneal apex(AT),minimum corneal thickness(MT) and corneal thickness at the pupil center(PT) were determined using the pentacam. Distances from the corneal apex to MT(MD)and PT(PD) were calculated and their quadrant position(taking the corneal apex as the reference) determined:point of minimum thickness(MC) and point of central thickness(PC) depending on the quadrant position. Two multivariate linear regression models were constructed to examine the influence of age, gender, power of the flattest and steepest corneal axes, position of the flattest axis, corneal volume(determined using the Pentacam)and PT on MD and PD. The effects of these variables on MC and PC were also determined in two multinomial regression models.·RESULTS: MT was located at a mean distance of 0.909 mm from the apex(79.4% in the inferior-temporal quadrant). PT was located at a mean distance of 0.156 mm from the apex. The linear regression model for MD indicated it was significantly influenced by corneal volume(B =-0.024; 95% CI:-0.043 to-0.004). No significant relations were identified in the linear regression model for PD or the multinomial logisticregressions for MC and PC.·CONCLUSION: MT was typically located at the inferiortemporal quadrant of the cornea and its distance to the corneal apex tended to decrease with the increment of corneal volume.

The Yukawa and Exponential Potentials for a Galaxy’s Spherical Central Bulge*

By adding an extra term to the Newtonian potential, matter outside the orbit of a star adds to the gravitational acceleration acting on that star. In this work, we solve the Poisson equation for non-Newtonian potentials of a spherically symmetric distribution of mass. We derive equations for calculating the centripetal acceleration and velocity of galactic disk stars that are due to the Newtonian and exponential potentials of the galaxy’s central bulge.

Dark Future for Dark Matter

The prevailing cosmological constant and cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmic concordance model accounts for the radial expansion of the universe after the Big Bang. The model appears to be authoritative because it is based on the Einstein gravitational field equation. However, a thorough scrutiny of the underlying theory calls into question the suitability of the field equation, which states that the Einstein tensor Gμv is a constant multiple of the stress-energy tensor Tμv when they both are evaluated at the same 4D space-time point: Gμv = 8πkTμv, where k is the gravitational constant. Notwithstanding its venerable provenance, this equation is incorrect unless the cosmic pressure is p = 0;but then all that remains of the Einstein equation is the Poisson equation which models the Newtonian gravity field. This shortcoming is not resolved by adding the cosmological constant term to the field equation, Gμv +Λ gμv =8πkTμv

Modifications of L-Glutamine and L-Leucine Transport in Proliferating Lymphocytes

Lymphocytes respond to mitogens that stimulate proliferation by increasing theirs metabolic activity. In this study we investigate L-Glutamine and L-Leucine uptake as markers of cell response to Concavalina A (ConcaA) stimulation, using a high-resolution flow technique. We found that lymphocytes induced to blast transformation enhanced rate and efficiency of amino acid uptake during cell proliferation. Considering that increases in transport is the first quantifiable response of cells during malignant transformation, amino acid uptake could also be useful as an early marker of malignancy.
