A multi-integrated approach on toxicity effects of engineered TiO2 nanoparticles

The new properties of engineered nanoparti- cles drive the need for new knowledge on the safety, fate, behavior and biologic effects of these particles on organisms and ecosystems. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles have been used extensively for a wide range of applica- tions, e.g, self-cleaning surface coatings, solar cells, water treatment agents, topical sunscreens. Within this scenario increased environmental exposure can be expected but data on the ecotoxicological evaluation ofnanoparticles are still scarce. The main purpose of this work was the evaluation of effects of TiO2 nanoparticles in several organisms, covering different trophic levels, using a battery of aquatic assays. Using fish as a vertebrate model organism tissue histological and ultrastructural observations and the stress enzyme activity were also studied. TiO2 nanoparticles （Aeroxide~ P25）, two phase composition ofanatase （65%） and rutile （35%） with an average particle size value of 27.64-11 nm were used. Results on the ECs0 for the tested aquatic organisms showed toxicity for the bacteria, the algae and the crustacean, being the algae the most sensitive tested organism. The aquatic plant Lemna minor showed no effect on growth. The fish Carassius auratus showed no effect on a 21 day survival test, though at a biochemical level the cytosolic Glutathione-S-Transferase total activity, in intestines, showed a general significant decrease （p〈0.05） after 14 days of exposure for all tested concentrations. The presence of TiO2 nanoparticles aggregates were observed in the intestine lumen but their internalization by intestine cells could not be confirmed.

This paper presents the building process of an interactive instrument called the Colombian Solar Atlas able to easily visualize meteorological data but also assess the current and future potentials of solar photovoltaic generation throughout the whole territory of Colombia,South *** new tool is based on two different meteorological *** first one is done with historical data extracted from satellite imagery information,and the other one corresponds to data issues from regional-scale climate change projection *** satellite database was validated with different in-situ *** Colombian Solar Atlas uses basic and advanced photovoltaic generation models to estimate the generation of a custom solar *** this tool,a user selects a point on the map and can have directly pertinent information to search for an optimal location with a spatial resolution of 4 *** tool is the first open interactive online tool particularly adapted to study the photovoltaic power potential in Colombia,considering the country’s needs and native language.

This article is an extensive review that provides an update on the pathophysiology,symptoms,diagnosis,and treatment of diabetic *** is no reported prevalence,but it has been described that patients with type 1 diabetes have a cumulative incidence at 10 years of 5.2%,and type 2 patients,1%.Also,in the group of type 1 diabetes,it has been observed that women are more likely to present this condition(5.8%vs 3.5%).Many factors are associate with its development(e.g.,hyperglycemia,vagal dysfunction,loss of expression of neural nitric oxide synthase in the myenteric plexus,alterations in the Cajal interstitial cell network,and oxidative stress).Gastrointestinal discomfort could be perceived 70% higher in diabetic patients,describing that 25%of diabetic patients experience gastrointestinal *** enteropathy could affect any portion of the gastrointestinal tract,but esophageal alterations were described in more than 60% of diabetic patients,also 60% of them present constipation,and 20%,*** emptying scintigraphy is useful to evaluate gastroparesis,therefore,gastric retention of more than 60%at 2 h has a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 20% for diagnosis;however,other studies such as breath tests,with a sensitivity of 89% and a specificity of 80%,or the endoscopic capsule contribute to the *** is no cure;however,management must be multidisciplinary,focused on slowing the progression of diabetic gastroenteropathy,reducing symptoms,and restoring function;that includes nutritional recommendation,maintain glucose levels kept below 180 mg/dL,use of prokinetics,anti-emetics;nowadays,it has been special interest in surgical treatment,such as pyloroplasty,also gastric electrical stimulation appears to be another alternative.

Metabolic Syndrome and Insulin Resistance Are Associated with Chronic Kidney Disease in Nondiabetic Adults with Abdominal Obesity

Aims: we investigate whether insulin resistance is associated with an increased prevalence for chronic kidney disease irrespective of the concurrent presence of metabolic syndrome. Methods: 1638 patients with abdominal obesity were selected. Metabolic syndrome and abdominal obesity were defined according to the International Diabetes Federation criteria. Insulin resistance was defined by Homeostasis Model Assessment Index >P75. Chronic kidney disease was defined by the presence of a low estimated glomerular filtration rate (Results: metabolic syndrome was present in 1030 (62.9%) patients and insulin resistance in 787 (48%). Conversely 61% of those with metabolic syndrome were insulin resistant and 79% of those with insulin resistance had metabolic syndrome. Chronic kidney disease was present in 18%. In multivariate analysis, chronic kidney disease was increased in subjects with insulin resistance (odds ratio [OR] = 1.350;CI 95%: 1.021 - 1.785;p = 0.035) and in those with metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.417;CI 95%: 1.045 - 1.922;p = 0.025). Conclusions: Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance were significant and independently associated with chronic kidney disease in nondiabetic adults with abdominal obesity.

AIM：To compare the effect of phacoemulsification on intraocular pressure（IOP）in patients with primary open angle glaucoma（POAG）and pseudoexfoliation glaucoma（PXG）.METHODS：A retrospective comparative case series conducted at the Glaucoma Department at the Association to Prevent Blindness in *** study enrolled consecutive patients having phacoemulsification with intraocular lens（IOL）implantation and a diagnosis of POAG or *** about IOP values and number of glaucoma medications used was collected at baseline,1,3,6 and12mo ***：The study enrolled 88 patients（88 eyes）.After phacoemulsification,there was a statistically significant reduction in IOP values and glaucoma medications use compared to baseline in both POAG and PXG patients（P〈0.001）.In the POAG group,a 20%decrease in IOP values was evidenced,and a 56.5%reduction in the number of medications used at the one-year *** PXG group showed a 20.39%,and a 34.46%decrease in IOP and number of medications used,respectively.A significant difference in the meanΔIOP（postoperative changes in IOP）was evidenced between groups（P=0.005）.The reduction of the postsurgical IOP mean values in both groups,the POAG group showed a greater reduction in IOP values compared to the PXG ***：In both types of glaucoma,phacoemulsification cataract surgery can result in a significant IOP reduction（20%）over a 12mo follow-up *** number of medications used is also significantly reduced up to 12mo after surgery,especially in the PXG group.

Crohn’s disease might result from a complex interplay between genetic susceptibility, environmental factors, and altered gut microbiota, leading to dysregulated innate and adaptive immune responses. The reported case presents a patient with intestinal subocclusion associated with a pharmacobezoar who had a good evolution with clinical treatment. This case report aims to demonstrate the complexity of diagnostic search, even with the classic version of the disease. And it also comes to show the need for a thorough medical history and differential diagnosis investigation.

Transmission of cryptococcosis by liver transplantation:A case report and review of literature

BACKGROUND Cryptococcosis is a fungal infection caused by the yeast-like encapsulated basidiomycetous fungus of the Cryptococcus neoformans(***)species *** fungi are ubiquitous in soil and bird droppings,and infection by them is an important global health concern,particularly in immunosuppressed patients,such as organ transplant recipients and those infected by the human immunodeficiency *** fungus usually enters the body through the respiratory tract,but extremely rare cases of infection acquired by transplantation of solid organs have been *** SUMMARY We report a case of disseminated cryptococcosis in a liver transplant recipient,diagnosed 2 wk after the *** patient initially presented with fever,hyponatremia and elevated transaminase levels,manifesting intense headache after a few *** cultures were positive for *** biopsy showed numerous fungal elements surrounded by gelatinous matrix and sparse granulomatous *** resonance imaging of the brain showed multiple small lesions with low signal in T2,peripheric enhancement and edematous halo,diffuse through the parenchyma but more concentrated in the subcortical *** with amphotericin B for 3 wk,followed by maintenance therapy with fluconazole,led to complete resolution of the *** recipients of both kidneys from the same donor also developed disseminated cryptococcosis,confirming the transplant as the source of *** organ donor lived in a rural area,surrounded by tropical rainforest,and had negative blood cultures prior to organ *** This case highlights the risk of transmission of fungal diseases,specifically of ***,through liver graft during liver transplantation.

Assessing Drought Vulnerability of Bulgarian Agriculture through Model Simulations

This study assesses vulnerability of agriculture to drought, using WINISAREG model and seasonal SPI2-index for eight climate regions （1951-2004）. Results relative to Plovdiv show that in soils of large TAW （total available water） net irrigation requirements NIRs range from 0 to 380 mm. In soils of small TAW, NIRs reach 440 mm in the very dry year. NIRs in Sofia/Silistra are about 100 mm smaller than in Plovdiv while in Sandanski they are 30-110 mm larger. Rainfed maize is associated with great yield variability （29% 〈 Cv 〈 72%）. Considering an economical RYD （relative yield decrease） threshold, 32% of years are risky when TA Wis large in Plovdiv that is double than in Sofia and half than in Sandanski. In North Bulgaria the risky years are 10% in Pleven/Silistra that is half than in Lom. In Plovdiv region reliable relationships （R2 〉 91%） were found relating the SPI2 ＂July-Aug.＂ with simulated RYD of rainfed maize while remaining relationships were less accurate （73% 〈 R2 〈 86%）. Economical losses are produced when High Peak Season SPI2 〈＋ 0.20 in Sandanski, SPI2 〈 - 0.50 in Plovdiv and SPI2 〈 - 0.90 in Sofia. In North Bulgaria the SPI2 threshold ranges from - 0.75 to - 1.50. Derived reliable relationships and SPl-thresholds are used for drought vulnerability mapping.

A Check List to Reduce Misuse of Primary Cesarean Sections in Women with a Single Fetus in Cephalic Position

Background: Avoiding primary C-section is the safest and most effective way of decreasing C-section rates. We analyzed circumstances and decisions made among pregnant women without history of C-section and cephalic single fetus (group B), who ended up having a Cesarean birth, to identify opportunities that may optimize the decisions about delivery. Methodology: We evaluated the clinical histories of pregnant women from group B who completed their pregnancies in the Hospital Universitario de Santander (Bucaramanga, Colombia) during 2013. We evaluated the decision moments from admission until birth, including the registry of the reasons for having a C-section, compliance of all the criteria to support the decision and its appropriateness, and how adequate were the procedures done during the induction or augmentation of labor. Results: We evaluated 1320 histories;666 (55.7%) ended by C-Section. In 59.8% of the histories, we identified at least one decision that could have been addressed differently to optimize the delivery type and, potentially, avoid ending in a Cesarean birth. The most frequent opportunities arise due to a lack of clarity in the record of the reason for performing the C-section (70.1%), and inadequate use of labor induction in the patients that had to end their gestation (38.5%). Conclusion: In the Hospital Universitario de Santander during 2013, despite observing a meaningful subregistry of the indication to perform a C-section, we found that in one out of every two patients there are opportunities of improvement in the registry and attention to reduce the high incidence of C-sections in the institution. This analysis allowed us to create a checklist to fill out before making the final decision of performing a Cesarean birth.
