The cultivation knowledge about the Cerrado native fruits is incipient. These plants are found in wild conditions and its fruits are obtained through extraction, as the case of araticum (Annona crassiflora Mart.), which is a species with the great economic potential. This plant propagation by grafting, among other methods, has proved problematic. Possible incompatibility causes were investigated using histochemical and anatomical studies. Transverse and longitudinal stems sections were analyzed in the araticum grafting area on rootstocks of araticum-de-terra-fria (Annona emarginata (Schltdl.) H. Rainer “Terra-fria”), biribá (Annona mucosa (Jacq.) Baill), and soursop (Annona muricata L.). Araticum graft survival rate was low with these rootstocks, which seems to be associated with anatomical and histochemical factors. The periderm and pith are more developed in araticum than in the other plants, which affects the alignment and juxtaposition of the cambium and vascular bundles in the graft area, hindering a successful graft. The histochemical reactions for phenolic compounds detection were very strong in cortical parenchyma, pith and xylem fibers of araticum (A. crassiflora). The presence of phenolic compounds is increased depending on the cut for grafting and the formation of these compounds is evidenced as an important limiting factor for successful grafting. It is recommended practices for reducing these compounds and a larger diameter of the graft, as a mean to overcome these anatomical difficulties.

Mango is a widely cultivated and consumed fruit in Brazil and one of the most important alternatives to take advantage of the production excess is dehydration. Therefore, this work aims at establishing better operational conditions for ＂spray-drying＂ processes, in order to obtain the powder of mango pulp by means of a rotational central compounded planning, and also at carrying out the physicochemical characterization of both the integral mango pulp and the powder obtained from the operational conditions mentioned above. Both integral mango pulp and powder were analyzed as for the following physicochemical characteristics： humidity, pH, titratable acidity, soluble solids （~Brix）, vitamin C and color--through parameters L＊, a＊, b＊ and h0, Chrome （C＊） and color difference （AEL＊a＊b＊）. The experimental planning used presented significant differences at 5% of probability, showing that the model was adjusted to the data in accordance to F test, thus being possible to determine the best process conditions. In addition, the average results of the physicochemical parameters pointed out that the pulp used was in accordance with the patterns established by the quality and identity patterns for mango pulp. Moreover, it showed that the powder obtained had good physicochemical quality.

The human hair follicle, a mini-organ formed with neuroectodermal-meso-dermal interaction, is a complex structure, in the active steady state (anagen) the dermal papilla can be considered as a ball of extracellular matrix, surrounding specialized fibroblasts. The cross-talk of dermal papilla with neighbouring matrix cells results in the maintenance of hair fibre production. This study aimed to investigate the proliferative potential of the compound TrichotechTM, a phytocomplex obtained from a mixture of essential oils, on cultured human fibroblasts and its ability to modulate the gene expression of FGF-7 and FGF-10. TrichotechTM was shown to enhance fibroblasts proliferation in concentrations of 0.5% to 2.0%, and also increase the percentage of cells in the S/G2/M phases of the cell cycle. TrichotechTM at both 1.0% and 2.0% induced a statistically significant effect on wound healing assay compared to the untreated control. We examined the interaction between cell survival (PI3K/Akt) and mitogenic (Ras/MAPK) signal transduction pathways after TrichotechTM treatment (1.0% and 2.0%) on the fibroblast cell line. TrichotechTM caused phosphorylation of ERK1/2, as well as greater phosphorylation of MEK in comparison with both the untreated control and ERK1/2. PI3K and AKT, however, were not shown to be significantly more phosphorylated following TrichotechTM exposure. To verify the relative expression of mRNA for FGF-7 and FGF-10 genes, a real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) protocol was used. Results show the increase in mRNA expression by fibroblasts after treatment with TrichotechTM. In both concentrations tested, TrichotechTM was found to increase the expression of FGF-7 and FGF-10. Sirius red staining allows for rapid assessment of collagen content, it showed a significant increase in collagen content in treated fibroblasts. Unconventional vegetables, in general, are plants that have been largely consumed by the population at some point and, because of changes in eating behavior, now present reduced economic and social expression and have lost ground to other vegetables. The objectives of this study were to perform phytochemical screening of the ethanol extracts of Rumex acetosa L., Tropaeolum majus L., Solanum muricatum, Stachys byzantina K. Koch and Solanum betaceum Cav. and evaluate their antioxidant potentials via the methods involving scavaging of the DPPH free radical and the ABTS radical, phosphomolybdenum and reducing power. In phytochemical screening, five species of unconventional vegetables tested positive for tannins;for sesquiterpene, lactones and other lactones. These tests were positive for Tropaeolum majus L. and Rumex acetosa L., Solanum betaceum Cav. and Solanum muricatum tested negative for steroids. Only Solanum betaceum Cav. gave positive tests for flavonoids. Among the five plant species studied, Stachys byzantina K. Koch presented the greatest antioxidant potential in all the methods evaluated.

This study assessed the influence of acquisition parameters of tomographic volumes on the reproduction of thin bone structures for rapid prototyping purposes. Two parameters were investigated: Field of View (FOV) and Slice Thickness (ST). The specimen was comprised of five pairs of 0.6 mm, 1.1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm and 2.8 mm thick cortical bone plates. The plates were stuck into utility wax;the first plate of the pair was in vertical position while the second plate was oblique to the first one. Forty-five tomographic images were captured and separated into 3 groups of fifteen images. Each group had a specific FOV: 180 mm;250 mm and 430 mm, respectively. Within each of these three groups, tomographic slice thickness was varied for every five of the fifteen slices. Acquisitions were carried out with STs of 1 mm, 2.5 mm and 5 mm. The Cyclops Medical Station software was used in the voxel-to-voxel analysis of radiologic density, reaching a total of 1350 assessed images. ST and FOV variation influenced the reproduction of thin bone walls, and FOV was shown to be a very important parameter. The larger the acquisition FOV, the more reduction in the number of voxels within the range of reconstruction for cortical bone in all of the bone plates. The visual analysis of the images of very thin bone walls showed that there could be a sharp drop in the radiologic density value in several adjacent voxels, resulting in areas which might not be reproduced in the reconstruction.

AIM: To compare expression of nicotinic cholinergic receptors(CHRNs) in healthy and squamous cell carcinoma-affected esophagus and determine the prognostic ***: We performed RT-q PCR to measure the expression of CHRNs in 44 esophageal samples from healthy individuals and in matched normal surrounding mucosa, and in tumors from 28 patientsdiagnosed with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC). Next, we performed correlation analysis for the detected expression of these receptors with the habits and clinico-pathological characteristics of all study participants. In order to investigate the possible correlations between the expression of the different CHRN subunits in both healthy esophagus and tissues from ESCC patients, correlation matrices were generated. Subsequently, we evaluated whether the detected alterations in expression of the various CHRNs could precede histopathological modifications during the esophageal carcinogenic processes by using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Finally, we evaluated the impact of CHRNA5 and CHRNA7 expression on overall survival by using multivariate ***: CHRNA3, CHRNA5, CHRNA7 and CHRNB4, but not CHRNA1, CHRNA4, CHRNA9 or CHRNA10, were found to be expressed in normal(healthy) esophageal mucosa. In ESCC, CHRNA5 and CHRNA7 were overexpressed as compared with patient-matched surrounding non-tumor mucosa(ESCC-adjacent mucosa; P < 0.0001 and P = 0.0091, respectively). Positive correlations were observed between CHRNA3 and CHRNB4 expression in all samples analyzed. Additionally, CHRNB4 was found to be differentially expressed in the healthy esophagus and the normalappearing ESCC-adjacent mucosa, allowing for distinguishment between these tissues with a sensitivity of 75.86% and a specificity of 78.95%(P = 0.0002). Finally, CHRNA5 expression was identified as an independent prognostic factor in ESCC; patients with high CHRNA5 expression showed an increased overall survival, in comparison with those
