Dynamical Donwscaling for Railroad Areas in eastern Amazon and southeastern Brazil:Current Climate and Near-Future Projections

We performed a dynamic downscaling using ReGCM4 regional model driven by MPI global model for current (1990/2012) and near-future (2015/2039) climate in order to characterize the seasonal rainfall regimes throughout the railroad areas in eastern Amazon and southeastern Brazil. The analysis of observational data for the current climate indicated the existence of pronounced spatial variations in rainfall regime across railroad regions during both the rainy and dry seasons. Although models have presented generalized underestimation, the regional model showed improvements on spatial representation and intensity of the rainfall in comparison with global model results. We reported the future projections taking into account the correction of simulated rainfall by the values of the biases found in each respective seasonal regime, so that the results are expressed by percentage changes of the future (2015/2037) relative to the current climate patterns. For the railroad in eastern Amazon, projections indicate a weak decrease of rainfall of about -15% in the rainy season (January to May), however during the dry season (June to October) are expected drastic reductions between -70% and -90% in south (Carajás in Pará state) and north (sao luis in Maranhao state) portions. Conversely, for the railroad in southeast Brazil, model projections point out for an increased rainfall regime during the rainy season (October to February) around +30% to +40% in the east part of the region over the espírito santo state.

Background: We report the use of intravitreal bevacizumab as an option for the treatment of chronic or recurrent central serous chorioretinopathy (CsC). Methods: eight eyes with chronic or recurrent CsC received intravitreal bevacizumab (1.25 mg/0.05 cc) and underwent best corrected visual acuity (VA), optical coherent tomography (OCT), fluorescein angiography (FA) and indocyanine green angiography (ICG) before, and one, three and six months after treatment. Results: All patients showed improvement in visual acuity, fluorescein angiographic leakage, choroidal hyperpermeability and reduced or resolved neurosensory detachment following treatment. Two patients require a second dose of intravitreal bevacizumab. Conclusions: Intravitreal injection of bevacizumab was associated with visual improvement and reduced neurosensory detachment without adverse events in patients with chronic or recurrent CsC. Although these results are promising, further investigations would be helpful to understand this therapy for patients with CsC.

The aim of this work was to carry out monitoring of some elements considered toxic in sediments from Lerma River. An analytical method was optimized in our laboratory for quantification of nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb) by using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical emission spectrometry (ICP-Oes). Ten sediments were collected along the Lerma River at variable distances and at 20 cm depth. samples were heated to 60°C to dryness, followed by separation of particle size using a 74-μ No. 200 mesh for homogeneity purposes. 0.2 g of sample underwent microwave-assisted acid digestion, followed by plate evaporation. The samples were dissolved in 10 mL with HNO3 at 5% v/v for ICP-Oes analysis. A certified reference material (CRM 8704) was used to evaluate the method’s accuracy and precision. The method showed linearity, precision, accuracy, and limits of quantification and detection acceptable for protocol validation of analytical method. The average results obtained in recovery of CRM 8704 were ~90% and precision was below 7% for all elements. Levels concentration of As, Cr, Pb show high pollution in A1, A7 and A8 sites. Therefore, Co, Mn and Ni can be considered in this study as normal values. In conclusion, concentration levels of As, Cr, Pb in sediments were high according to Us-ePA and NOM-147-seMARNAT/ssA1-2004. The presence of these heavy metals in Lerma River could be due mainly for the emitted from industries, such as pharmaceutical, automotive, metal mechanics and tannery, and urban residual water. Finally, the method developed using ICP-Oes has enabled monitoring of these elements in sediments from Lerma River, with possible applications in a routine analytical laboratory.

The effects of a cyanobacterial extract （Ce） on Helicobacter pylori biofilm formation onto hydrophobic and hydrophilic abiotic surfaces and the expression of luxs, flaA, omp18, lpxD and ureA genes associated to biofilm were studied. NCTC11638 reference strain and HP796, a resistant clinical isolate, were grown in Mueller-Hinton broth supplemented with 5% fetal calf serum （FCs） or 1% Ce. The ability to form biofilm, viability, morphological changes and gene expression of adhered H. pylori cells were determined. The strains were able to form biofilm on both surfaces with the nutritional supplements analyzed. H. pylori conserved a characteristic bacillary morphology and viability with Ce. Cells attachment was higher with Ce than FCs regardless of strains and surfaces. The most remarkable increase in gene expression was observed with the ompl8 gene using the Ce supplement, indicating the important participation of outer membrane proteins in biofilm establishment. The clinical isolate showed similar and even greater gene expression than the reference strain. The results obtained indicated that the nutrients provided by Ce favored biofilm formation with retained pathogenicity that under certain conditions can occur in natural aquatic environments.

The electrooxidation of hydrogen on platinum and gold electrodes is comparatively described in this paper. The reaction is faster on platinum than on the gold surface, because the reactive diffuses inside of the gold metal. This process is complicated with the lift of surface reconstruction of the (100) plane, which allows the fast penetration of the H atoms through the more open surface. The diffusion limiting current is then discontinued and the current falls. On platinum, the current fall occurs simultaneously with the metal oxide formation. It is assumed that the hydrogen helps the adsorbed OH group formation, which is the first step of metal oxidation, and it has been called “incipient hydrous oxide” (IHO). Current begins to fall slowly at the (IHO) potential. At higher potential the current falls abruptly.

This paper shows the effects caused by the combination of two factors: an anthropic factor and one natural. The leading causes of imbalance in the subsoil due to drawdown of the aquifer is reflected on the surface with the appearance of cracks on ground, then came the lateral and vertical movements called faulting. This geological phenomenon is due to a pattern of orientation is associated with a regional fault system, lateral movement is almost imperceptible but the vertical displacement becomes important because it is the most conspicuous and be responsible for the damage caused to the urban infrastructure, vertical faulting is related to the drawdown generated by intense extraction of groundwater. The demand for groundwater, increasing year by year in the past four decades because of the change in land use, the most significant change was the shift from rain feed crop to irrigated crop agriculture, this change in land use occurred on Celaya’s Valley between year period 1976-2009 was quantified by use of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIs).

Management of MsW(Municipal solid Waste)is a major downside in most of the biggest *** composting of the organic fraction of MsW is one of the oldest and simplest ways of organic waste *** is a self-heating biological conversion that generates appropriate finished merchandise such as soil conditioner or *** City generates about 12,500 ton/day of MsW,44%of it is food scraps and yard trimmings which are the OFMsW(Organic Fraction of Municipal solid Waste),2,500 ton/day of it is composted at the BPCP(Bordo Poniente Composting Plant)yielding 500 ton/day of *** purpose of this study was to evaluate three treatments to accelerate the composting process,so eventually the city could increase the amount of the OFMsW at *** compared three different treatments;one of them showed a significant reduction in time of the composting process(p≤0.05)i.e.,it took less time to reach the thermophilic stage,maturity and stabilization *** was achieved at 35 days and 60 days to *** conclude that shredding the feedstock plus leachate inoculum addition at the beginning of the process,reduces the composting time in about 61%with respect to the time it takes at the BPCP,where lasted 90 days.

The CBM （chromoblastomycosis） is a disease caused by dematiaceous fungi, which has the species Fonsecaea pedrosoi as main agent. This fungus is found in warm and moist climates, characteristically found in the amazonic lands of the region, where its environmental isolation was once described. This research aimed to identify the healthy population exposed to agent F. pedrosoi in four villages located in the Legal Amazon. In order to clarify the risk factors for allergic immune exposure, a survey was conducted by the technique of delayed skin reaction （IDR） with the metabolic antigen （chromomycin） in 449 healthy individuals. The results showed that 14.9% （67 subjects） were IDR positive, with induration 〉 5 mm.
