In systems in atomic.and nano sc.les suc. as c.usters or agglomerates c.nstituted of partic.es from a few to less than one hundred of atoms, quantum c.nfinement effec.s are very important. Their optic.l and elec.ronic.properties are often dependent on the size of the systems and the way in whic. the atoms in these c.usters are bonded. Generally, these nano-struc.ures display optic.l and elec.ronic.properties signific.ntly different of those found in c.rresponding bulk materials. Silic.n agglomerates found in Silic.n Ric. Oxide (SRO) films have optic.l properties, whic. have reported as depended direc.ly on nano-c.ystal size. Furthermore, the room temperature photoluminesc.nc. (PL) of Silic.n Ric. Oxides (SRO) has repeatedly generated a huge interest due to their possible applic.tions in optoelec.ronic.devic.s. However, a plausible emission mec.anism has not yet widespread ac.eptanc. of the sc.entific.c.mmunity. In this researc., we employed the Density Func.ional Theory with a func.ional B3LYP and a basis set 6 - 31G* to c.lc.late the optic.l and elec.ronic.properties of small (six to ten silic.n atoms) and medium size c.usters of silic.n (c.nstituted of eleven to fourteen silic.n atoms). With the theoretic.l c.lc.lation of the struc.ural and optic.l properties of silic.n c.usters, it is possible to evaluate the c.ntribution of silic.n agglomerates in the luminesc.nt emission mec.anism experimentally found in thin SRO films.

Introduc.ion: The World Health Organization establishes that 80% of the world’s population uses traditional medic.ne for their primary c.re, bec.use they c.ntain c.mpounds responsible for their properties. Objec.ive: To evaluate the antifungal effec. of the essential oil of c.trus paradisi against c. albic.ns and the c.totoxic.effec. in three c.ll lines in vitro. Methods: The phytoc.emic.l c.arac.erization of the oil was c.rried out by c.emic.l methods and Gas c.romatography (Gc.MS) and the antifungal effec. against c. albic.ns (ATc. 90029) was evaluated by the Kirby-Bauer method, whic. evaluated c.nc.ntrations of 0.75 - 20 μg/mL and c.mpared with nystatin 100,000 Ul/mL as a positive c.ntrol. The perc.ntage of the relative inhibitory effec. was c.lc.lated. The minimum inhibitory c.nc.ntration (MIc. was determined at 24 hours. Moreover, the c.totoxic.effec. on c. albic.ns and c.ll lines was determined by the c.lorimetric.MTT tetrazolium assay. Finally, the antifungal effec. against c.ndida strains isolated from c.inic.l samples was evaluated at a c.nc.ntration of 20 μg/mL. Results: The essential oil showed an antifungal effec. with a perc.ntage of inhibition of 123%. The MIc.was 2.5 μg/mL, and the c.totoxic.ty index was 5.44 μg/mL for c. albic.ns. The Ic.0 values were 21.060, 9.482 and 4.176 μg/mL for Vero E6, J774A.1 and MDBK c.lls respec.ively. c.nc.usion: These results show the use of c. paradisi essential oil as an alternative treatment in oral antifungal therapy, it is benefic.al due to its antifungal effec. and its low toxic.ty on c.ll c.ltures.

c.ostridium diffic.le is a nosoc.mial enteric.pathogen, c.nsidered the main etiologic.l agent of antibiotic.assoc.ated diarrhea in hospitals. c. diffic.le is resistant to several antimic.obial agents used in empiric.treatment protoc.ls, whic. c.nfers selec.ive advantages to this spec.es as c.mpared with other members of the intestinal mic.obiota. The aim of this study was to evaluate and identify possible alterations of the intestinal mic.obiota population resulting from the use of antimic.obials assoc.ated with infec.ions by c. diffic.le (c.I). Denaturing Gradient Gel Elec.rophoresis (DGGE) was used to evaluate fec.l samples from two groups: healthy subjec.s and patients with c. diffic.le-assoc.ated diarrhea (c.AD). A dec.ease in bac.erial diversity was highlighted by the low number of bands in samples from c.AD patients, c.mpared with healthy subjec.s. This may indic.te that antibiotic.treatment would affec. bac.erial diversity, leading to a signific.nt differenc. between the intestinal mic.obiota of these two groups, but further studies are still needed. Firmic.tes and Verruc.mic.obia phyla were detec.ed mainly in healthy individuals, and these c.uld be related to protec.ion fac.ors against the c.I. Klebsiella variic.la/K. pneumoniae were found mostly in samples from c.I patients. This study shows the effec.s of antimic.obials and the c.I itself on human intestinal mic.obiota.

Bac.ground: It is well-founded that empathy is an attribute that inc.eases the likelihood of good c.mmunic.tion between health professionals and patients, and it is usual that there is the c.nvic.ion that empathy levels are higher in women than in men. Aims: A study c.mparing levels of empathy gender of students in 18 sc.ools of dentistry from six Latin Americ.n c.untries was c.nduc.ed. Method: An exploratory c.oss-sec.ional study of whic. empathy levels were measured by the Jefferson Sc.le of Empathy for dental students (S version) and these levels were c.mpared between genders by t-student test, after verific.tion of normal distribution and homosc.dastic.ty. Results: Variability was found in the results of the c.mparisons. In some c.ses, empathy levels were higher in women, others in men and in most of them there were no differenc.s between genders. c.nc.usions: The observed results do not support the belief that women are more empathetic.than men. However, more studies must be performed in more powers and c.untries to verify that the results desc.ibed c.nstitute a sc.entific.fac. and not just a feature of dental students spec.fic.lly in the c.untries studied.

Prognostic.value of endothelial dysfunc.ion in type 1 diabetes mellitus

Patients with diabetes mellitus are at high risk of developing atherosc.erosis, assoc.ated with higher rates of mic.o and mac.o vasc.lar involvement suc. as c.ronary artery disease and renal disease. The role of hyperglyc.mia to induc. synthesis of reac.ive oxygen spec.es by the oxidation of gluc.se, leading to an inc.eased produc.ion of advanc.d glyc.sylation end produc.s, as well as inflammation and oxidative stress has been proposed as a possible mec.anism in the pathogenesis of endothelial dysfunc.ion(ED). The interac.ion between c.peptide- the c.nnec.ing segment of pro-insulin-and nitric.oxide in vasodilation is also disc.ssed. Therefore, endothelial dysfunc.ion has been identified as an early marker of vasc.lar disorder in type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. In some other diseases, ED has been c.nsidered an independent predic.or of vasc.lar disease, regardless of the method used. Studies have demonstrated the importanc. of endothelial dysfunc.ion as an useful tool for identifying the risk of vasc.lar c.mplic.tions in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, partic.larly as regards to renal impairment. The aim of this review is to c.arify the prognostic.value of endothelial dysfunc.ion as a marker of vasc.lar disease in these subjec.s.

In the last two dec.des, unprec.dented c.anges have taken plac. in the frequenc. and severity of wildfires;in different regions of the world, some fires were even c.assified as megafires. Although there are studies about the diverse effec.s of fire, whic. have made signific.nt theoretic.l c.ntributions, a c.mprehensive review of the c.anges in fire researc. is required to understand worldwide patterns, partic.larly in those c.untries where fire ac.ivity is on the rise, suc. is the c.se of Mexic.. The objec.ive of this study was to analyze the trends in the researc. on wildfires published in Mexic. and worldwide over a 40-year timesc.le. For this purpose, the Web of Sc.enc. database, bibliometric.tools, and the keywords TI = Forest fire* OR TI = Wildfire* were used to extrac. as many artic.es as possible related to fires from 1980 to 2020, without being restric.ed to those studies whose title inc.uded any of the variants of the keywords. There were 8458 public.tions about fires in the vegetation c.ver, with a notable inc.ease in the frequenc. of studies in the previous dec.de;52% of the studies were c.nc.ntrated in five c.untries and 20% of the artic.es foc.sed on the study of different aspec.s of the soil. Mexic. ranks thirteenth in volume of sc.entific.produc.ion and studies in the c.untry have foc.sed mainly on the desc.iption of the quantitative relationship between the size of the affec.ed area and the number of oc.urrenc.s in the landsc.pe, meanwhile, studies on fires and the c.nsequenc.s on the biotic.interac.ions have been little explored.

c.ffee is one of the world most traded agric.ltural c.mmodities. c.rrently, a lot of attention has been on Robusta c.ffee (c.ffea c.nephora Pierre ex A. Froehner) bec.use it seems to evidenc. a greater toleranc. to extreme c.imatic.events than Arabic. c.ffee (c. arabic. L.). Despite this, only a few works have been developed aimed at disc.iminating the c.imatic.vulnerability in regions whic. prioritize robust c.ffee produc.ion. The aim of this work was to analyze historic.l c.imatic.variables in spac. and time for the c.arac.erization of c.imatic.vulnerability of mic.o-regions, in searc. of mitigation and adaptation, whic. might support the improvement of produc.ion systems of c. c.nephora c.ffee trees. The c.se study was c.rried out for one of the largest produc.ion regions of Robusta c.ffee of the world, in Brazil, geographic.lly loc.ted between the 39°38' and 41°50' West longitude meridians and the 17°52' and 21°19' South latitude parallels. The vulnerability was c.arac.erized by the spatial and temporal variation of rainfall and rainfall seasonal pattern (based on 30 years of historic.l data), elements of c.imatic.water balanc., elevation and area planted with Robusta c.ffee. The c.oic. of mitigation and adaptation were based on widely validated c.iteria. Overall, the results show that the vulnerability of Robusta c.ffee is related to low index of rainfall, the rainfall seasonability and the water defic.enc.. In the studied region, there is approximately 42% of some type of water vulnerability during the year, with a severe to medium sc.le;this vulnerability is very pronounc.d in regions farther away from the c.ast of the Atlantic.Oc.an, sinc. for a year approximately 92% of them are water defic.ent. In addition, the data show that this distanc. from the oc.an implies a reduc.ion of 75% in the phases of water surplus not only.
