Repair of sustained liver injury results in fibrosis(*** accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins),and ultimately the complete distortion of parenchymal architecture of the liver,which we call *** and staging of fibrosis is thus a mainstay in the management of chronic liver diseases,since many clinically relevant decisions,such as starting treatment and/or monitoring for complications including hepatocellular carcinoma,may depend on *** gold standard for fibrosis staging is liver biopsy,the role of which,however,is questioned nowadays because of cost,hazards and poor acceptance by *** the other hand,imaging techniques and/or measurement of direct and indirect serum markers have not proved to be completely satisfactory under all circumstances as alternatives to liver *** progress in this field is nowmore crucial than ever,since treatments for established fibrosis appear on the *** dissection of the pathways involved in the pathophysiology of liver diseases has put forward several novel candidate biomarkers of liver fibrosis,such as growth arrest-specific6,Mac-2-binding protein,osteopontin,placental growth factor,growth/differentiation factor 15 and hepatocyte growth *** molecules have been suggested to have potential to complement or substitute methods currently used to stage liver ***,we review the pros and cons for their use in this setting.

Autonomous Vehicle Platoons In Urban Road Networks:A Joint Distributed Reinforcement Learning and Model Predictive Control Approach

In this paper, platoons of autonomous vehicles operating in urban road networks are considered. From a methodological point of view, the problem of interest consists of formally characterizing vehicle state trajectory tubes by means of routing decisions complying with traffic congestion criteria. To this end, a novel distributed control architecture is conceived by taking advantage of two methodologies: deep reinforcement learning and model predictive control. On one hand, the routing decisions are obtained by using a distributed reinforcement learning algorithm that exploits available traffic data at each road junction. On the other hand, a bank of model predictive controllers is in charge of computing the more adequate control action for each involved vehicle. Such tasks are here combined into a single framework:the deep reinforcement learning output(action) is translated into a set-point to be tracked by the model predictive controller;conversely, the current vehicle position, resulting from the application of the control move, is exploited by the deep reinforcement learning unit for improving its reliability. The main novelty of the proposed solution lies in its hybrid nature: on one hand it fully exploits deep reinforcement learning capabilities for decisionmaking purposes;on the other hand, time-varying hard constraints are always satisfied during the dynamical platoon evolution imposed by the computed routing decisions. To efficiently evaluate the performance of the proposed control architecture, a co-design procedure, involving the SUMO and MATLAB platforms, is implemented so that complex operating environments can be used, and the information coming from road maps(links,junctions, obstacles, semaphores, etc.) and vehicle state trajectories can be shared and exchanged. Recovering extracellular polymeric substances(EPS)from waste granular sludge offers a cost-effective and sustainable approach for transforming wastewater resources into industrially valuable ***,the application potential of these EPS in real-world scenarios,particularly in paper manufacturing,remains *** we show the feasibility of EPS-based biomaterials,derived from anaerobic granular sludges,as novel coating agents in paper *** systematically characterised the rheological properties of various EPS-based *** applied as surface sizing agents,these EPS-based biomaterials formed a distinct,ultra-thin layer on paper,as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy.A comprehensive evaluation of water and oil penetration,along with barrier properties,revealed that EPS-enhanced coatings markedly diminished water absorption while significantly bolstering oil and grease *** performance was observed in EPS variants with elevated protein and hydrophobic contents,correlating with their superior rheological *** enhanced water-barrier and grease resistance of EPS-coated paper can be attributed to its non-porous,fine surface structure and the functional groups in EPS,particularly the high protein content and hydrophobic humic-like *** research marks the first demonstration of utilizing EPS from anaerobic granular sludge as paper-coating biomaterials,bridging a critical knowledge gap in the sustainable use of biopolymers in industrial applications.
