Comparing the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil after different bioremediation approaches in relation to the extracellular enzyme activities

A 120-day experiment was conducted to compare the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) from agricultural soil after natural attenuation(NA), phytoremediation(P), mycoremediation(M), and plant-assisted mycoremediation(PAM) approaches in relation to the extracellular enzyme activities in soil. The NA treatment removed the total soil PAH content negligibly. The P treatment using maize(Zea mays) enhanced only the removal of low and medium molecular PAHs. The Pleurotus ostreatus cultivated on 30–50 mm wood chip substrate used in M treatment was the most successful in the removal of majority PAHs. Therefore,significantly(p < 0.05) highest total PAH removal by 541.4 μg/kg dw(dry weight)(36%) from all tested M treatments was observed. When using the same fungal substrate together with maize in PAM treatment, the total PAH removal was not statistically different from the previous M treatment. However, the maize-assisted mycoremediation treatment significantly boosted fungal biomass, microbial and manganese peroxidase activity in soil which strongly correlated with the removal of total PAHs. The higher PAH removal in that PAM treatment could be reflected in the following post-harvest time. Our suggested M and PAM approaches could be promising in situ bioremediation strategies for PAH-contaminated soils.

Utilization of Class C Fly Ash As A Raw Material for Manufacturing of Refractory Materials

There have been increasing efforts to utilize energy by-products （EBP） all over the world. In the Czech Re- public fly ash is usually used in ceramic technology, es- pecially in brick manufacturing and for ceramic tiles. The average production of EBP is about Ig million tons per year. The range of potential products, where EBP could be used, is very wide and energy by-products have become an important raw material source. In this paper the attention was focused on class C fly ash and its usage in field of refractory materials. Experimental works were carried out on mixtures with fly ash and clay. There were also tested batches for lightweight fireclay bricks. The maximal amount of CFA should be up to 50%.

Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Dynamics in Arabica Coffee Agroforestry Systems in the Noun Division, West Cameroon

Agroforestry systems (AFSs) offer viable solutions to climate change because of the below-ground biomass (BGB) that is maintained by the soil. Therefore, spatially explicit estimation of their BGB is crucial to account for emission reduction efforts. A study to assess soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen dynamics in Arabica coffee agroforests was conducted in two subdivisions (Foumbot and Kouoptamo) of the Noun Division in western Cameroon. The methodological approach involved the collection of 150 soil samples taken at different depths: 0 - 10, 10 - 20 and 20 - 30 cm. Depending on the depth, the SOC stock is 27.93 ± 1.13 tC/ha at 10 cm depth, 22.37 ± 1.47 tC/ha at 20 cm and 20.79 ± 0.31 tC/ha at 30 cm. According to the age classes of the Arabica coffee systems (ACA), the C/N ratio in our study area averaged 26.94 ± 13.60 for the (5 - 20) year old systems in Foumbot and 60.64 ± 48.80 for the (20 - 35) year old systems in Kouoptamo. Depending on the depth, at 10 cm this ratio is higher in Kouoptamo than in Foumbot with a maximum value of 57 and 38 respectively for the two subdivisions. In view of the results obtained, it would be important to analyse the types of microorganisms responsible for the decomposition of organic matter which is linked to soil organic carbon.

Experiences of Using Alternative Raw Materials in Manufacturing of Refractory Materials

The article describes the experiences of alternative materials for the manufacturing of the refractory materi- als in the company P-D Refractories CZ a. s. The atten- tion is focused on energy by-products （EBP）. Energy by-products are generated during burning and desul- phurization in thermal power plants. Classical high-tem- perature -fly ash （class *** ash according to ASTM C618） is the most important and .fly ash from .fluidized technology （ class C-fly ash） is the second group. In the Czech Republic, power plants produce about 14 million tons of energy by-products every year. Utilization of these products in ceramic technology means a reduction of raw material costs and also it helps to reduce adverse environ- mental impact. Class F-fly ash （ FFA ） and cinder from high temperature combustion （CD） were used in light- weight insulation fireclay bricks. We can use these mate- rials as a grog and a lightening agent for materials with bulk density over 900 kg · m-3 and classification tem- perature up to 1 150 ℃. Class *** ash （CFA） is be- ing tested in a wide range of the refractory materials. For example, it can be used in lightweight fireclay bricks, fireclay bricks for stoves, acid-resistant fireclay bricks or refractory castables. The range of potential products, where EBP could be used, is very wide and energy by-products have become an important raw mate- rial source.

Chronic Anogenital Ulcerations and Polymicrobial Pelvic Infections: About a Case

Genital ulceration is the loss of integrity of the mucous membranes (or genital skin) leaving the dermis uncovered and almost always accompanied by satellite lymphadenopathies. Beyond a month of evolution, it is said to be chronic. Sexually transmitted diseases are infections due to microbial agents among which parasites, bacteria, viruses and fungi that can be associated with each other to varying degrees. Sexually transmitted infections must be mentioned before any genital ulceration. Hence the interest of the case that we report of chronic anogenital ulcerations complicating a polymicrobial pelvic infection in a patient immunocompromised to HIV. The physical examination reveals a hypogastric sensitivity to deep palpation, the presence of a superinfected anogenital ulceration exposing the deep dermis covered with purulent serosities interesting the labia minora, the posterior vaginal fork, the anal region, the clitoris and an extension of the lesions to the gluteal fold is observed. We found a satellite lymphadenopathy in the right inguinal fold. The screening finds the HIV1 positive serology with a viral load of 28,000 copies, the herpes simplex 1&2 and Chlamydia trachomatis serologies were all positive. The genital samples are marked by the presence of bacterial vaginosis with Candida Albicans and Gardnerella Vaginalis, the presence of urogenital mycoplasmas of the Ureaplasma Urealyticum The pelvic ultrasound was in favor of a bilateral adnexitis. A protocol was put in place: the first step consisted of seat baths, antifungi and antibiotics administration: fluconazole 150 mg and tinidazole 2 g in single doses, then josamycin 1 g/24h in two doses per os for two weeks. The second stage consists of the administration of doxycycline 200 mg for 21 days, Aciclovir 500 mg for 10 days, and the administration of ARV (Tenofovir + Lamivudine + Dolutegravir) or one tablet daily. By testing 92 different biochars,this study had the objective to determine the relations between simple physico-chemical characteristics of biochar(elemental composition,ash fraction,specific surface area,process parameters)and infrared sorption characteristics revealing the presence of specific functional *** results of Diffusive Reflection Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy were statistically analyzed with multiple linear regression techniques and Principal Component Analysis(PCA)with the biochar characterization parameters as model *** dominant parameters affecting the functional group signals were the pyrolysis temperature,the H/C-ratio and specific surface area of the biochar and the ash *** models were able to explain 60-90%of data variance for specific peaks in the *** application of PCA could further reduce the input parameters to three main factors explaining 70.8%of total data *** of the first two main factors showed the similarity of infrared spectra of biochars produced at 300 and 450℃,whereas a pyrolysis temperature of 600℃ lead to a partial and a 750℃ to a nearly complete loss of biochar surface functional groups.

To improve the lateral resolution in microscopic imaging,microspheres are placed close to the object’s surface in order to support the imaging process by optical near-field *** microsphere-assisted measurements are part of various recent studies,no generally accepted explanation for the effect of microspheres *** nanojets,enhancement of the numerical aperture,whispering-gallery modes and evanescent waves are usually named reasons in context with microspheres,though none of these effects is proven to be decisive for the resolution *** present a simulation model of the complete microscopic imaging process of microsphere-enhanced interference microscopy including a rigorous treatment of the light scattering process at the surface of the *** model consideres objective lenses of high numerical aperture providing 3D conical illumination and *** enhanced resolution and magnification by the microsphere is analyzed with respect to the numerical aperture of the objective ***,we give a criterion for the achievable resolution and demonstrate that a local enhancement of the numerical aperture is the most likely reason for the resolution enhancement.

Determinants of invasive strategy in elderly patients with non-ST elevation myocardial infarction

BACKGROUND:Knowledge gaps across literature prevent current guidelines from providing the profile of elderly patients most likely to derive benefit from invasive strategy (IS) in non ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Furthermore, the benefit of IS in a real-world elderly population with NSTEMI remains unclear. The aims of this study were to determine factors that lead the cardiologist to opt for an IS in elderly patients with NSTEMI, and to assess the impact of IS on the 6-month all-cause mortality.;METHODS:This multicenter prospective study enrolled all consecutive patients aged ≥ 75 years old who presented a NSTEMI and were hospitalized in cardiology intensive care unit between February 2014 and February 2015. Patients were compared on the basis of reperfusion strategy (invasive or conservative) and living status at six months, in order to determine multivariate predictors of the realization of an IS and multivariate predictors of 6-month mortality.;RESULTS:A total of 141 patients were included; 87 (62%) underwent an IS. The strongest independent determinants of IS were younger age [odds ratio (OR): 0.85, 95%-confidence interval (CI): 0.78-0.92; < 0.001) and lower "Cumulative Illness Rating Scale-Geriatric" number of categories score (OR: 0.83, 95%CI: 0.73-0.95; = 0.002). IS was not significantly associated with 6-month survival (OR: 0.80, 95%CI: 0.27-2.38; = 0.69).;CONCLUSIONS:In real-world elderly patients with NSTEMI, younger patients with fewer comorbidities profited more often from an IS. However, IS did not modify 6-month all-cause mortality.
