Brakes in railway trains have a variety of forms such as air brake,eddy current brake and aerodynamic *** primary functions areto slow down and stoptrains,so asto ensure safe and efficient train *** are indispensable and safety-critical systems for all types of railway trains including passenger(high-speed,metro,tram,etc.)and freight(heavy-haul,intermodal,etc.)*** and efficient railway operations require a good understanding of brakes from various parties including drivers,maintenance crews,manufacturers,and design *** helps to expand and deepen the knowledge about railway train *** modelling and simulation date back to the pre-digital ***,it remains a challenging topic to today due to many reasons including their nonlinear dynamic nature,complex devices,and the limits regarding parameter determination.

Allogeneic blood transfusion during liver resection for malignancies has been associated with an increased incidence of different types of complications: infectious complications, tumor recurrence, decreased survival. Even if there is clear evidence of transfusion-induced immunosuppression, it is difficult to demonstrate that transfusion is the only determinant factor that decisively affects the outcome. In any case there are several motivations to reduce the practice of blood transfusion. The advantages and drawbacks of different transfusion alternatives are reviewed here, emphasizing that surgeons and anesthetists who practice in centers with a high volume of liver resections, should be familiar with all the possible alternatives.

The authors present a case with a sublingual giant dermoid cyst, rapidly enlarged during pregnancy, which showed itself with deglutition and mild respiratory problems. Dermoid cysts (DCs) are benign lesions arising from entrapment of epithelial rests during embryogenesis. They are most frequently located in the ovaries and testes. Up to 6.9% are found in the head and neck and 1.6% within the oral cavity, representing less than 0.01% of all oral cavity cysts. They usually present early in life as asymptomatic masses with slow and progressive growth. However, they may reach a large size with a potential impact on deglutition, speech, and respiration. It is suggested that the rapid growth of DCs during pregnancy is associated with the increase of plasma levels of estrogens and progesterone. In order to eliminate respiratory and deglutition issues, it was decided to perform the surgical excision after a cesarean delivery at 29th week.

Novel Investigation on Ammonium Thiosulphate (ATS) as an Inhibitor of Soil Urease and Nitrification

Among the numerous products so far promoted as effective urease and/or nitrification inhibitors, it is possible to detect a renewed interest in environmentally friendly tools, such as ammonium thiosulphate (ATS, (NH4)2S2O3) which is currently used as fertilizer for N and S nutrition. Among contradictory results accounted in the current literature, there is reported that ammonium thiosulphate (ATS) exerts inhibitory activity at large but unlikely agronomic rates of 2500 - 5000 mg·kg-1 soil. We carried out a novel experiment aimed to: a) verify the inhibitory action of ATS, even when applied in soil at low rates (25 and 100 mg·kg-1 soil as S-ATS), towards urease activity and nitrification in urea treated and not treated soils;b) investigate on the influence of ATS on the soil microbial biomass as it is generally assumed that soil microorganisms are the main agents of urea hydrolysis. For these purposes we selected an arable sandy soil and a grassland sandy-loam soil which are treated with urea or/and ATS. Results obtained from this novel investigation showed that a) ATS significantly decreased urease activity in both soil types and that the exerted inhibitory effect was moderate and short-term;b) ATS retarded the hydrolysis of urea and lowered nitrate production in the urea treated soils;c) the available fraction of iron and manganese in the used soils might be involved in the mechanism of inhibition;d) ATS did not affect the size of soil microbial biomass pool;e) the efficiency of ATS as urease and nitrification inhibitor was more evident in the sandy soil. Because of its properties, ATS may be applicable on many crops without being harmful on the soil microbial pool.

Air flow in nose and sinuses is studied by means of a simple model based on the steady-state ideal fluid flow assumption and repeated use of Bernoulli’s equation. In particular, by describing flow of air drawn in through the vestibulumnasi during inspiration, we investigate how ventilation of the maxillary sinus is affected by surgical removal of part of the lateral walls of the nasal cavity close to the ostiummeatal complex. We find that, according to the model proposed, removal of tissues from this inner part of the nasal cavity may cause a decrease of the flux rate from the maxillary sinus.

The large prevalence of respiratory acid-base disordersoverlapping metabolic acidosis in hemodialysis population should prompt nephrologists to deal with the partial pressure of carbon dioxide(pCO_2) complying with the reduced bicarbonate concentration. What the most suitable formula to compute pCO_2 is reviewed. Then, the neglected issue of CO_2 content in the dialysis fluid is under the spotlight. In fact, a considerable amount of CO_2 comes to patients' bloodstream every hemodialysis treatment and "acidosis by dialysate" may occur if lungs do not properly clear away this burden of CO_2. Moreover, vascular access recirculation may be easy diagnosed by detecting CO_2 in the arterial line of extracorporeal circuit if CO_2-enriched blood from the filter reenters arterial needle.

We developed advances laser retroreflectors for solar system exploration, geodesy and for precision test of General Relativity (GR) and new gravitational physics: a micro-reflector array (INRRI, Instrument for landing-Roving laser Retroreflectors Investigations), a midsize reflector array for the European Earth Observation (EO) program, Copernicus (CORA, COpernicus laser Retroreflector Array), a large, single-retroreflector (MoonLIGHT, Moon Laser Instrumentation for General relativity High accuracy Tests). These laser retroreflectors will be fully characterized at the SCF_Lab (Satellite/lunar/GNSS laser ranging/altimetry Cube/microsat Characterization Facilities Laboratory), a unique and dedicated infrastructure of INFN-LNF (***/esperimenti/etrusco/). Our research program foresees several activities: 1) Developing and characterizing the mentioned laser retroreflector devices to determine landing accuracy, rover positioning during exploration and planetary/Moon’s surface georeferencing. These devices will be passive, laser wavelength- independent, long-lived reference point. INRRI will enable the performance of full-column measurement of trace species in the Mars atmosphere by future space-borne lidars. These measurements will be complementary to highly localized measurements made by gas sampling techniques on the Rover or by laser back-scattering lidar techniques on future orbiters and/or from the surface. INRRI will also support laser and quantum communications, carried out among future Mars Orbiters and Mars Rovers. This will be possible also because the INRRI laser retroreflectors will be metal back-coated and, therefore, will not change the photon polarization. The added value of INRRI is its low mass, compact size, zero maintenance and its usefulness for any future laser altimetry, ranging, communications, atmospheric lidar capable Mars orbiter, for virtually decades after the end of the Mars surface mission, like the Apollo and Lunokhod lunar laser
