The control of Pleistocene palaeogeography on the distribution of sandy patches in a silty Holocene lagoon(central Netherlands)

The brackish lagoon in the central part of The Netherlands was closed by a dike in 1932 and gradually changed into a *** of this lake were reclaimed and the surficial sediments of one of the polders(Noordoostpolder),reclaimed in 1942,has been investigated in detail by mapping of the walls of some1500 km of drainage ditches approx.1.4 m *** appeared that the sediments consist of an uncommonly large amount of silt,to different degrees mixed with reworked peat that had developed during the Holocene *** sandy deposits occur locally,at places that are at first sight distributed in a haphazard *** various sandy patches have different characteristics(grain-size distribution,rounding of the grains,mineral composition).These sands cannot have been introduced from the sea,nor can they have been supplied by the rivers that discharged into the lagoon,so they must have a local *** is found that several types of Pleistocene sandy or diamictic deposits below the Holocene peat and lagoonal sediments had an irregular topography and became eroded during the Holocene by wave *** resulted in sandy deposits around these Pleistocene highs,which consisted of glacial tills(boulder clays),river dunes(formed by aeolian activity along rivers under dry permafrost conditions)and coversand ridges,formed by aeolian activity in a belt between the ice margin and the more distal loess *** finding implies that palaegeographical interpretations of local grain-size anomalies in a specific deposit should not only consider facies changes due to changes in the sediment supply,but should also consider local erosion leading to the exposure of previously deposited material with a divergent composition.

Were sauropod dinosaurs responsible for the warm Mesozoic climate?

It was recently postulated that methane production by the giant Mesozoic sauropod dinosaurs was larger than the present-day release of this greenhouse gas by nature and man-induced activities jointly, thus contributing to the warm Mesozoic climate. This conclusion was reached by correct calculations, but these calculations were based on unrealistic assumptions:the researchers who postulated this dinosaur-induced warm climate did take into account neither the biomass production required for the sauropods’ food, nor the constraints for the habitats in which the dinosaurs lived, thus neglecting the palaeogeographic conditions. This underlines the importance of palaeogeography for a good understanding of the Earth’s geological history.

Our contribution about a newly recognized sedimentological feature, which we called tombolith,has raised some comments on the etymology of the term, the assumed lack of field data, the usage of a term that has a special meaning in stratigraphy, the origin of the seismic shocks that played a role, so-called basic tenets, the origin of soft-sediment deformation structures, and the role of liquefaction. We argue that most comments result from an insufficiently thorough reading of our text, whereas some other remarks concern aspects that we did not deal with. Finally, several remarks are based on outdated literature and from insufficient knowledge of the regional geology.

Sedimentary successions in the northwestern Gulf of Suez provide important clues to the understanding of the geological evolution of NE Africa during the middle and late *** study focuses on detailed facies analyses in order to characterize the depositional environments and system tracts of the Bartonian-Priabonian succession cropping out in this ***-Priabonian carbonate deposits in five stratigraphic sections constitute,from base to top,the Gebel Hof,Observatory,Sannur,Qurn,and Wadi Hof *** formations contain four local assemblage zones of larger benthic *** of litho-,bio-,and microfacies in the succession resulted in the recognition of 12 lithofacies *** lithofacies are represented by packages of lime-mudstones,wackestones,packstones,pack-to grainstones,grainstones,rudstones,boundstones and *** lithofacies have been grouped into four geneticallyrelated facies associations that represent,respectively,tidal flats/shallow subtidal,restricted-shelf/lagoonal,shoal bar,and outer-shelf lagoon/reefal depositional environments in a downslope shallow-marine inner-ramp *** vertical transitions of these facies associations,representing facies changes through time,imply fluctuations of the regional sea *** two peaks in the Bartonian correspond to well-known global eustatic sea-level rises;the pronounced Priabonian regression must be ascribed to the known global eustatic sea-level fall in combination with regional tectonic *** facies distribution suggests that the study area was located in the direct vicinity of some islands during the Bartonian-Priabonian.

Depositional and Diagenetic controls on Sandstone Reservoirs with Low Porosity and Low Permeability in the Eastern Sulige Gas Field, china

In order to determine the genesis and the factors that control the low-porosity and low- permeability sandstone reservoirs in the eastern Sulige Gas Field in the Ordos Basin, systematic studies on the sedimentary facies and diagenesis were conducted by means of analysis of cores, thin sections, fluid inclusions, X-ray diffraction, cathode luminescence and scanning electron microscope. It was found that the sand bodies of the major gas reservoirs in the Shan1 section （P1S1） and the He8 section （P2H8） were formed during the Permian as sedimentary facies such as braided-channel bars, braided-river channels and point bars of a meandering river. Four types of diagenetic facies developed subsequently： in order from the best to the poorest properties these are type A （weak compaction, early calcite cement-chlorite film facies）, type B （moderate compaction, quartz overgrowth-feldspar corrosion-kaolinite filling facies）, type c （strong compaction, late calcite cement-quartz corrosion facies） and type D （matrix filling and strong compaction facies）. This diagenesis is undoubtedly the main reason for the poor reservoir properties of sandstone reservoirs, but the sedimentary facies are the underlying factors that greatly affect the diagenesis and thus the reservoir performance. Favorable diagenetic facies developed mainly in relatively small lithofacies such as braided-river channels, channel bars and point bars. The vertical distribution of the physical properties and the diagenetic facies of the reservoirs are related to the stratigraphic succession. Most of the sandstones between mudstones and thin beds of sandstone are unfavorable diagenetic facies. Analyses indicate that siliceous cementation can hardly be stopped by hydrocarbon filling. Authigenic chlorite could hardly protect the primary porosity. It not only occupies pore space, but also blocks pathways through sandstone reservoirs, so that it has significant influence on the permeability. Authigenic chlorite cannot be

Objective Several well-exposed gravity flow deposits in the Early cretaceous Lingshandao Formation provide a rare opportunity to study deep-water processes. The main objective of this work is to establish the spatial and temporal relationships between the various gravity flow deposits, and thus to establish their sequence stratigraphic patterns and depositional conditions.

Restrictions to the application of 'diagnostic'criteria for recognizing ancient seismites

Soft-sediment deformation structures induced by seismic liquefaction and/or fluidization receive much attention in sedimentological,structural and palaeoseismic *** direct record of larger earthquakes is restricted to instrumental and historical data; the recognition of prehistoric earthquakes requires criteria to recognize seismites in the geological *** areal distribution of seismites can sometimes be related to active faults since distances to the epicenter(for a given magnitude) tend to be related to the liquefaction effects of seismic *** use of soft-sediment deformation structures for palaeoseismic studies has limitations,*** anything is known,for instance,about the effects that modern seismic events have on the sediments in most ***,criteria for the recognition of seismites are still under *** following characteristics seem,particularly in combination,the most reliable:(1) Soft-sediment deformation structures should occur in laterally continuous,preferably recurring horizons,separated by undeformed beds;(2) These deformation structures should be comparable with structures known to have been triggered by modern seismic activity;(3) The sedimentary basin should have experienced tectonic activity at the time when the deformations were formed; and(4) The intensity or abundance of the soft-sediment deformation structures in a presumed seismite should change laterally,depending on the distance to the *** turns out that all of these four criteria have important exceptions.(1) Soft-sediment deformation structures occurring over large lateral distances in a specific layer can be triggered also by other ***,in environments with a low sedimentation rate,the time between successive earthquakes is often too short to allow accumulation of beds that remain ***,total liquefaction of a sandy bed may result in the absence of deformation features.(2) No truly diagnostic sof

Seismites resulting from high-frequency, high-magnitude earthquakes in Latvia caused by Late Glacial glacio-isostatic uplift

Geologically extremely rapid changes in attitude by glacial rebound of the Earth crust after retreat of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet at the end of the last Weichsetian glaciation influenced the patae- ogeography of northern Europe. The up（ift of the Earth crust apparently was not gradual, but shock-wise, as the uplift was accompanied by frequent, high-magnitude earthquakes. This can be deduced from strongly deformed layers which are interpreted as seismites. Such seismites have been described from several coun- tries around the Baltic Sea, including Sweden, Germany and Poland. Now similarly deformed layers that must also be interpreted as seismites, have been discovered also in Latvia, a Baltic country that was covered by an ice sheet during the last glaciation. The seismites were found at two sites： Near Vatmiera in the NE part and near Rakuti in the SE part of the country. The seismites were found in sections of about 7 m and 4.5 m high, respectively, that consist mainly of glaciofluvial and gtaciotacustrine sands and silts. At the Vatmiera site, 7 seismites were found, and at the Rakuti site these were even 12 seismites. The two sections have not been dated precisely up tilt now, but lithological correlations and geomorpho- logical characteristics suggest that the sediments at the Vatmiera site cannot be older than 14.5 ka. Because the accumulation of the section did not take more than about 1000 years, the average recurrence time of the high-magnitude （M≥4.5-5.0） earthquakes must have been maximally only 100-150 years, possibly only 6-7 years. The sediments at Rakuti must also have formed within approx. 1000 years （17-16 ka）, implying a recurrence time of high-magnitude earthquakes of maximaUy once per 100-200 years.
