background: We currently have international and national guidelines regarding the assessment and monitoring of clinical signs and humane endpoints in animals used in teaching and research, which make the performance of these activities mandatory for any experiment and professional working in this area. Assigning the severity of a research experiment is the result of an analysis of records of observations of the animal’s behavior, and clinical signs. The aim of this study was to describe the importance of carrying out a severity assessment associated with clinical and behavioral monitoring of rodents and rabbits during experimentation to maintain the welfare of these animals undergoing scientific research. Methods: The literature search was carried out using the following terms: “Monitoring”;“Humane endpoints”;“Animal welfare”, “Rodents”;“Rabbits”, and as connectors “and”;“or”, in the following databases: PubMed;LILAcS/bIREME and SciELO. Results: A total of 987 articles were identified in the databases, and 20 of these studies were included in this review. conclusions: Humane endpoint protocols and procedure severity tables are of the utmost importance, both from an ethical point and to refine the results of research conducted on laboratory animals. They should be drawn up jointly by the teams responsible for the project and the maintenance of the animals during the research period, and the data obtained should be published so that the scientific community can have access to it, helping to disseminate these practices, as well as helping to draw up new procedures. Monitoring and evaluating the welfare and clinical condition of animals undergoing scientific research procedures is the responsibility of the professors, researchers, veterinarians, and animal facility coordinators. Plants hold biochemical and physiological mechanisms to withstand drought ***,depending on water deficit interval,plant rehydration relies on how it can retain growth or a positive water balance—or rarely *** this study,two species of Hymenaea,one from the Amazon and the other from the brazilian cerrado,were investigated for their physiological mechanism associated with growth rehydration upon short-term exposure to drought *** findings demonstrate that Hymenaea courbaril tends to invest in nitrogen to the detriment of carbon compounds,-as it is limited by lower net photosynthesis-and adjust root growth to attenuate drought stress *** contrast,Hymenaea stigonocarpa takes advantage of higher water potential and a basal rate of lower net photosynthesis to support aboveground growth under such ***,it is postulated that there are distinct ways of controlling water status and growth between *** and ***,which are determined either by the ability of the species to keep net photosynthesis at low levels of water content or by favoring the accumulation of nitrogen *** mechanisms were effective with regards to water use efficiency and thus it is reasonable to suggest that strategies are not exclusive and may work under adverse conditions,as observed in Amazon and brazilian cerrado ***.

bAcKGROUND Hepatitis c virus(HcV)infection is responsible for a chronic liver inflammation,which may cause end-stage liver disease and hepatocellular *** E(protein:ApoE,gene:APOE),a key player in cholesterol metabolism,is mainly synthesized in the liver and APOE polymorphisms may influence HcV-induced liver *** To determine whether APOE alleles affect outcomes in HcV-infected patients with liver cirrhosis following orthotopic liver transplantation(OLT).METHODS This was a cohort study in which 179 patients,both genders and aged 34-70 years,were included before or after(up to 10 years follow-up)*** injury severity was assessed using different criteria,including METAVIR and models for endstage liver *** polymorphisms were analyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain *** The APOE3 allele was the most common(67.3%).In inflammation severity of biopsies from 89 OLT explants and 2 patients in pre-transplant,the degree of severe inflammation(A3F4,0.0%)was significantly less frequent than in patients with minimal and moderate degree of inflammation(≤A2F4,16.2%)P=0.048,in patients carrying the APOE4 allele when compared to *** addition,a significant difference was also found(≤A2F4,64.4%vs A3F4,0.0%;P=0.043)and(A1F4,57.4%vs A3F4,0.0%;P=0.024)in APOE4 patients when compared to APOE3 *** fibrosis degree of the liver graft in 8 of 91 patients and the lack of the E4 allele was associated with more moderate fibrosis(F2)(P=0.006).cONcLUSION Our results suggest that the E4 allele protects against progression of liver fibrosis and degree of inflammation in HcV-infected patients.

Objective:To evaluate antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of saline extract from Tithonia diversifolia leaves by phytochemical bioprospecting,and investigate its safety against animal ***:The saline extract was prepared,with Nacl(0.15 M),by constant stirring of the dried and pulverized leaves,followed by volume reduction by *** extract was phytochemical characterized using ultra-performance liquid chromatography,and total phenol and flavonoid analysis also was *** antioxidant capacity was determined through DPPH*radical,the antimicrobial property was evaluated against standard bacteria and fungi,and the viability assays were performed against mice ***:Fifteen compounds were identified belonging to two main classes terpenoids and *** extract showed 22.185 mg GAE/g of total phenolic compounds and 3.220 mg QE/g of ***,extract showed higher antioxidant ability similar to butylated hydroxytoluene a standard molecule[(3.042±0.019)mg AAE/g and(4.12±0.10)mg AAE/g to saline extract and butylated hydroxytoluene,respectively].The antimicrobial assays demonstrated that the extract had a significant antifungal potential against candida species and could be used with safety against mice splenocytes,in concentrations lower than 50μg/mL,promoting higher proliferation in these ***:Saline extract from Tithonia diversifolia leaves presents potential antioxidant,antifungal properties and induces immunostimulation in mice splenocytes.

Hepatocellular carcinoma （Hcc） is the most common primary liver cancer （1）. The incidence is rising in the last decades due to many factors, especially hepatitis c, alcoholic liver disease and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Moreover, the introduction of screening programs in patients with chronic liver disease has led to an increase in Hcc diagnosis （1,2）. In the western world, 80% to 90% of Hcc eases occur in patients with liver cirrhosis （3） while this proportion is lower in some regions in Asia and sub-Saharian Africa, where hepatitis b remains as an important etiologic factor for chronic liver disease （2,4）. In 1990, the annual world frequency of Hcc was 437,000 cases/year （1）, and in 2012 the number reached 782,200 cases/year being responsible for 746,000 deaths （5）. Nowadays, Hcc represents the 6th most frequent neoplastic disease in the world and the 3rd in mortality （5）.

Meloxicam(MLX) is an anti-inflammatory drug susceptible to variations and crystalline transitions. In compounding pharmacies, the complete crystallographic evaluation of the raw material is not a routine procedure. We performed a complete crystallographic characterization of aleatory raw MLX samples from compounding pharmacies. X-ray diffraction indicated the presence of two crystalline forms in one sample. DSc experiments suggested that crystallization, or a crystal transition, occurred differently between samples. The FTIR and ~1H NMR spectra showed characteristic assignments.^(13)c solid-state NMR spectroscopy indicated the presence of more than one phase in a sample from pharmacy b. The Hirshfeld surface analysis, with electrostatic potential projection, allowed complete assignment of the UV spectra in ethanol solution. The polymorph I of meloxicam was more active than polymorph III in an experimental model of acute inflammation in mice. Our results highlighted the need for complete crystallographic characterization and the separation of freely used raw materials in compounding pharmacies,as a routine procedure, to ensure the desired dose/effect.

Experimental Design as a Tool for the Development of citric Acid Production by Yarrowia lipolytica Using Glycerol as a Feedstock

Due to the scarcity of fossil fuels in the world, there is increasing interest in the commercial production of biodiesel, which leads to obtaining large amounts of glycerol as a byproduct. If not disposed of properly, glycerol can generate environmental impact. One of the promises, the application of the crude glycerol is the production of citric acid by microbial fermentation. citric acid is industrially produced by a submerged fermentation process with Aspergillus niger, using sucrose as carbon source, but due to increased demand for citric acid, alternative processes using renewable sources or waste materials as substrates and the cultivation of yeast strains are being studied. The aim of the study was to determine the best culture condition for maximum citric acid synthesis and lower isocitric acid production from crude glycerol through experimental design tool. For this purpose, the yeast strain Yarrowia lipolytica IMUFRJ-50682 was cultivated in nitrogen-limited glycerol-based media. Therefore, glycerol and yeast extract concentrations and agitation speed were evaluated as independent variables. With pure glycerol, the highest citric acid production achieved was 16.5 g/L with an isocitric acid production of 7.7% （in relation to citric acid）. With crude glycerol, citric acid production reduced to 6.7 g/L because of higher biomass yield. Therefore, an increase in the initial carbon to nitrogen molar ratio from 714 to 1,561 was necessary to increase citric acid production to 9.2 g/L, reducing isocitric acid production and to achieve a yield of 0.41 g of citric acid per glycerol consumed. In this condition, less nitrogen source was used, reducing production costs.

Sialolithiasis is the most common condition of the salivary glands and it is characterized by the development of a calcified structure within a salivary duct. This condition can lead to inflammation, bacterial infection, and abscess. The different forms of management range from the direct massage of the duct to the complete removal of the gland. This report describes an unusual case of submandibular sialolithiasis in a four-year-old girl. The main complaints were pain when eating and swelling in the floor of the mouth. The diagnosis was sialolithiasis in the duct of the submandibular gland. Since the salivary stone was palpable and located in the anterior portion of the duct, a minimally invasive procedure was planned. An excisional biopsy was performed and a unilateral salivary stone was removed. The histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis. Although rare in children, understanding the diagnostic process and the different treatment modalities leads to a favorable prognosis.
