The concept of receptive field(RF) is central to sensory neuroscience. Neuronal RF properties have been substantially studied in animals,while those in humans remain nearly unexplored. Here, we measured neuronal RFs with intracranial local field potentials(LFPs) and spiking activity in human visual cortex(V1/V2/V3). We recorded LFPs via macro-contacts and discovered that RF sizes estimated from lowfrequency activity(LFA, 0.5–30 Hz) were larger than those estimated from low-gamma activity(LGA, 30–60 Hz) and high-gamma activity(HGA, 60–150 Hz). We then took a rare opportunity to record LFPs and spiking activity via microwires in V1 simultaneously. We found that RF sizes and temporal profiles measured from LGA and HGA closely matched those from spiking activity. In sum, this study reveals that spiking activity of neurons in human visual cortex could be well approximated by LGA and HGA in RF estimation and temporal profile measurement, implying the pivotal functions of LGA and HGA in early visual information processing.

Surface modification of biomaterials has been adopted over the years to improve their biocompatibility. In this study, aiming to promote hydrophilicity and to introduce natural recognition sites onto poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) films, chitosan and its derivatives, carboxymethyl chitosan(CMC) and N-methylene phosphonic chitosan (NPC), were used to modify the surface of PLLA films by an entrapment method. Radiolabeled (125I) proteins were used to measure the amount of protein adsorbed to PLLA surfaces. Fibronectin (Fn) was used to study the protein adsorption on the modified PLLA surfaces, including isotherm adsorption and adsorption kinetics of single protein, competitive adsorption of binary proteins system and serum multi-proteins and the desorption behavior in serum solution. The results showed that in the isotherm adsorption, Fn had a larger adsorption capacity on the CS-modified surface at lower concentrations, but had a high adsorption capacity at CMC-modified surface at higher concentrations. In the study of absorption kinetics, Fn had a fastest adsorption equilibrium and a highest equilibrium adsorption capacity at the CS-modified surface, while it was opposite at the PCS-modified surface. When BSA and serum were added, it had the greatest effect on the adsorption of Fn on the PCS-modified surface. After 6 hours soaking in the desorption study, Fn had reached desorption equilibrium on all the modified surfaces, which had different effects on the desorption rate and the remaining percentage of Fn.

In a barotropic model the propagation of long-lived anticyclonic Gaussian eddies larger than the radius of deformation over a Gaussian-shaped topography and the merging of the two anticyclonic eddies are investigated by solving the generalized Flierl-Yamagata equation. It is shown that whether or not the basic flow is present, the isolated topography seems to encourage the amplification of an anticyclonic eddy and its southwest movement around the hill In the absence of both the westward flow and the topography, two anticyclonic eddies of identical sizes and amplitudes can merge. However, either the including of the topography or the westward basic flow can make them not merge. In the presence of both, the eddies can merge, but this merging depends on whether the parameter condition is appropriate or not. Therefore, it can be concluded that the topographic forcing might be a possible mechanism for the merging of two anticyclonic eddies.

Investigating the formation mechanisms of carbonate geothermal reservoirs is of theoretical and practical significance for summarizing the formation pattern of geothermal resources and further guiding their effective *** Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Plain(BTHP),predominantly located within the Jizhong Depression and Cangxian Uplift in the Bohai Bay Basin,serves as the primary region for geothermal exploitation and utilization in *** than 1500 geothermal wells have been drilled therein,with water temperature at the wellhead ranging from 55 to 110°C,single-well flow rate ranging between 80 and 120 m^(3)/h,and cumulative heating area exceeding 100×10^(6)m^(3).However,the exploration and research in the region remain limited *** per the previous geothermal and petroleum exploration results and the latest geothermal drilling data,this study comprehensively evaluated the geothermal resources of karst geothermal *** results show that two suites of carbonate karst reservoirs,namely the Jxw Formation and the Ordovician strata,have primarily developed in the BTHP,and their formation and evolution can be divided into four stages:the Mesoproterozoic-Early Paleozoic stage with carbonate sedimentation and the development of interlayer karst,the Late Paleozoic stage with the development of direct sedimentary cover,the Mesozoic stage with compressional uplifting and development of buried hill karst,and the Cenozoic stage with regional cover deposition and the modification and finalization of karst geothermal ***,the porosity evolution history of the geothermal reservoirs is composed of three stages,namely a significant decrease followed by a minor increase,a gradual decline,and then a small fluctuation from increase to decrease before slowly rising *** karstification in geothermal reservoirs can be summarized into quasi-syngenetic karstification,epigenetic karstification,and burial karstification,which can be subdivided into s

The development and utilization of biomass and agroforestry processing byproducts for high-value applications have been an important topic in the field of renewable materials *** on this,a two-step microwave hydrothermal pre-carbonization and KOH activation method was proposed to synthesize tannin-based activated carbons with a high specific surface area,hierarchical pore structure,and good electrochemical *** microstructure,texture properties,and physicochemical characteristics were *** results show that the prepared tannin-based activated carbons presented a hierarchical pore structure(micro-and mesopores)with a specific surface area as high as 997.46 m^(3) g^(−1).The electrochemical analysis shows that the tannin-based activated carbons have good wettability and charge transfer *** the three-electrode system with 6 M KOH as the electrolyte,the active material TAC_(600-4) had a maximum specific capacitance of 171 F g^(−1)at 0.5 A g^(−1).As the current density increases to 10 A g^(−1),the specific capacitance can still be maintained at 149 F g^(−1),indicating a good rate ***,the specific surface area and pore size of tannin-based activated carbons can be effectively adjusted by the alkali/carbon ratio,making it a promising supercapacitor electrode material and providing a new method for the high-value development of tannins in the field of electrochemical energy storage.

Comparison of surgical indications for hysterectomy by age and approach in 4653 Chinese women

Approximately one million hysterectomies are performed each year in China. However, national data regarding the indications and the surgical approaches for hysterectomy are lacking. The aim of this study was to examine the surgical indications for hysterectomy in different age groups and the relative merits of different surgical approaches for hysterectomy in Chinese women. Clinical data from 4653 cases of hysterectomy performed in Tongji Hospital from 2004 to 2009 were analysed. Hysterectomy was most commonly performed among women aged 40-49 years （2299; 49.4%）. Overall, colporrhagia and abdominal pain were the two most common indications for hysterectomy. The most common indications by age groups were as follows： malignant ovarian tumour, 〈 20 years; malignant uterine tumour, 20-29 and 30-39 years; uterine myoma, 40-49 and 50-59 years; and uterine prolapse, 60-69 and 〉 70 years. The proportion of malignant aetiology also varied by age, being the highest in women aged 〈 20 years （75.0%） and the lowest in those aged 40-49 years （19.9%）. Approximately 35% women who had hysterectomies also had concomitant bilateral oophorectomy. The lowest rate of oophorectomy occurred in women aged 30-39years （15.8%）, whereas the highest rate was in those aged 50-59years （75.9%）. The abdominal surgical approach was used in 84% of all hysterectomies. Surgeries using the vaginal approach required a significantly shorter operating time （118 min average） than all other approaches （P 〈 0.05）. Both the amount of bleeding and the blood transfusion volume required were smaller in vaginal approaches, with no significant differences between the others. The surgical approaches used were also related to the scope of surgery. Both the surgical indications and the rates of bilateral oophorectomy varied by age. In terms of both operating time and the amount of bleeding and blood transfusion volume required, the vaginal approach was superior to all other surgical approaches.
