Harmful components in cigarette smoke, such as nicotine, tar, and organic particulate matter, are the primary culprits behind lung diseases. While conventional filter materials based on cellulose, carbon, and molecular sieves exhibit commendable filtration capabilities, their high cost restricts their widespread applications. Based on this, the authors aim to prepare PET-based filter materials with good adsorption properties through a simple surface functionalisation strategy. The adsorption performance of the PET-based non-woven fabric was enhanced by the introduction of sodium alginate (SA). The gas adsorption experiments results reveal that SA-modified PET (SA-PET) exhibits significantly improved filtration efficiency for nicotine, tar, and total particulate matter-increasing by 27.1%, 26.2%, and 21.3%, respectively. Moreover, SA-PET exhibits more odour control ability than traditional activated carbon-based filter materials. These results prove that surface-functionalised SA-PET has better filtration performance for harmful substances in smoke and provides a new strategy for the design of high-performance filtration materials.

Afterburning behind the detonation front of an aluminized explosive releases energy on the millisecond timescale,which prolong the release of detonation energy and the energy release at different stages also shows significant ***,at present,there are few effective methods for evaluating the energy release characteristics of the middle reaction stage of such explosives,which can have a duration of tens to hundreds of *** present work demonstrates an approach to assessing the midstage of an aluminized explosive detonation based on a water push test employing a high degree of *** this method,the explosive is contained in a steel cylinder having one end closed that is installed at the bottom of a transparent water *** detonation,the gaseous products expand in one direction while forcing water ahead of *** resulting underwater shock wave and the interface between the gas phase products and the water are tracked using an ultra-high-speed framing and streak *** shock wave velocity in water and the expansion work performed by the gaseous detonation products were calculated to assess the energy release characteristics of aluminized explosives such as CL-20 and RDX in the middle stage of the detonation *** the middle stage of the detonation process of these aluminized explosives,the aluminum reaction reduced the attenuation of shock waves and increased the work performed by gas phase products.A higher aluminum content increased the energy output while the presence of oxidants slowed the energy release *** work demonstrates an effective means of evaluating the performance of aluminized explosives.

In response to the rapid increase in world population and subsequent demands for food,edible insects represent an alternative food source for humans that is rich in proteins,amino acids and *** is a tradition in many countries including China and Thailand,and edible insects have attracted a lot of attention in Western World due to their suitable nutrient composition,high mineral content(e.g.,Fe,Zn,Ca,Mg)and potential use as a supplement in human *** this study,we surveyed mineral content in seven insect orders and 67 species of mass produced and wild-harvested edible *** total content of essential elements in edible insects was very high in Tenebrio molitor,Bombyx mori,and Zonocerus *** heavy metal content(summarized for eight species)was below the maximum limit allowed for safe *** supply of minerals derived from insect biomass is complicated due to the high variations of mineral content in insects and the potential of its change due to processing.

Changes in water resource storage are inevitable due to climate change and human activities,thus understanding alterations in water storage within a specific region is imperative for the planning and management of water *** from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment(GRACE)satellite mission are extensively employed to analyze large-scale total terrestrial water storage anomalies(TWSA).In this study,we derived a more reliable TWSA using different types of GRACE gravity models,which served as the basis for evaluating spatial and temporal variations in total terrestrial water storage and its hydrological components(soil moisture and groundwater)across the Loess ***,we analyzed the impact of natural and anthropogenic influences on water storage in the Loess Plateau,categorizing them into primary and secondary influences,utilizing data on climate and human *** findings revealed a declining trend in the overall TWSA of the Loess Plateau,with a rate of decrease at-0.65±0.05 cm/yr from 2003 to 2020(Pluenced by natural factors to a limited *** findings provided valuable insights for local governments to implement proactive water management policies.

Lauric acid (LA) has the possibility to improve milk production in dairy cows by improving mammary gland development, however, the mechanism by which it might regulate mammary gland development is unclear. The influence of LA on milk production, nutrient digestibility and the expression of proteins related to mammary gland development in dairy cows were evaluated. Forty primiparous Holstein dairy cows were divided into 4 groups in a randomized block design. Four treatments included the control (0 g/d LA per cow), low-LA (100 g/d LA per cow), medium-LA (200 g/d LA per cow), and high-LA (300 g/ d LA per cow). Yields of milk, fat-corrected milk, and energy-corrected milk quadratically increased (P lucose, triglyceride, estradiol, prolactin, and insulin-like growth factor 1 concentrations increased linearly (P < 0.05) and albumin and total protein concentrations increased quadratically (P < 0.05). Moreover, addition of 200 g/d LA promoted (P < 0.05) the expression of protein involved in mammary gland development and fatty acids synthesis. The presence of interstitial electrons in electrides endows them with interesting attributes,such as low work function,high carrier concentration,and unique magnetic *** knowledge and understanding of electrides are thus of both scientific and technological ***,we employ first-principles calculations to investigate Mott-insulating Ae_(5)X_(3)(Ae=Ca,Sr,and Ba;X=As and Sb)electrides with Mn_(5)Si_(3)-type structure,in which half-filled interstitial electrons serve as ions and are *** Mott-insulating property is induced by strong electron correlation between the nearest interstitial electrons,resulting in spin splitting and a separation between occupied and unoccupied *** half-filled antiferromagnetic configuration and localization of the interstitial electrons are critical for the Mott-insulating properties of these *** with that in intermetallic electrides,the orbital hybridization between the half-filled interstitial electrons and the surrounding atoms is weak,leading to highly localized magnetic centers and pronounced correlation ***,the Mott-insulating electrides Ae_(5)X_(3)have very large indirect bandgaps(0.30 eV).In addition,high pressure is found to strengthen the strong correlation effects and enlarge the *** present results provide a deeper understanding of the formation mechanism of Mott-insulating electrides and provide guidance for the search for new strongly correlated electrides.

Tall clonal grasses commonly display competitive advantages with nitrogen(N)***,it is currently unknown whether the height is derived from the vegetative or reproductive ***,it is unclear whether the height of the vegetative or reproductive system regulates the probability of extinction and colonization,and determines species *** this study,the impacts on clonal grasses were studied in a field experiment employing two frequencies(twice a year ***)crossing with nine N addition rates in a temperate grassland,*** found that the N addition decreased species frequency and increased extinction probability,but did not change the species colonization probability.A low frequency of N addition decreased species frequency and colonization probability,but increased extinction ***,we found that species reproductive height was the best index to predict the extinction probability of clonal grasses in N-enriched *** low frequency of N addition may overestimate the negative effect from N deposition on clonal grass diversity,suggesting that a higher frequency of N addition is more suitable in assessing the ecological effects of N ***,this study illustrates that reproductive height was associated with the clonal species extinction probability under N-enriched environment.
