Thematic Trends in Complementary and Alternative Medicine Applied in Cancer-Related Symptoms

Purpose： The main goal of this study is to discover the scientific evolution of Cancer-Related Symptoms in Complementary and Alternative Medicine research area, analyzing the articles indexed in the Web of Science database from 1980 to 2013.design/Methodology/Approach： A co-word science mapping analysis is performed under a longitudinal framework（1980 to 2013）. The documental corpus is divided into two subperiods,1980–2008 and 2009–2013. Thus, the performance and impact rates, and conceptual evolution of the research field are shown.Findings： According to the results, the co-word analysis allows us to identify 12 main thematic areas in this emerging research field： anxiety, survivors and palliative care,meditation, treatment, symptoms and cancer types, postmenopause, cancer pain, low back pain, herbal medicine, children, depression and insomnia, inflammation mediators, and lymphedema. The different research lines are identified according to the main thematic areas,centered fundamentally on anxiety and suffering prevention. The scientific community can use this information to identify where the interest is focused and make decisions in different ways.Research limitation： Several limitations can be addressed： 1） some of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine therapies may not have been included; 2） only the documents indexed in Web of Science are analyzed; and 3） the thematic areas detected could change if another dataset was considered.Practical implications： The results obtained in the present study could be considered as an evidence-based framework in which future studies could be built.Originality/value： Currently, there are no studies that show the thematic evolution of this research area.

Erectile dysfunction(Ed),a condition closely related to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality,is frequently associated with obesity.In this study,we aimed to determine the prevalence of Ed and evaluate the associated risk factors in a cohort of 254 young(18–49 years)nondiabetic obese(body mass index[BMI]≥30 kg m−2)men from primary care.Erectile function(International Index of Erectile Function[IIEF-5]questionnaire),quality of life(Aging Males'Symptoms[AMS scale]),and body composition analysis(Tanita MC-180MA)were determined.Total testosterone was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry.Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to study the factors associated with Ed.Ed prevalence was 42.1%.Subjects with Ed presented higher BMI,waist circumference,number of components of the metabolic syndrome,AMS score,insulin resistance,and a more unfavorable body composition than those without Ed.Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that a pathological AMS score(odds ratio[OR]:4.238,Pdegree of obesity(BMI≥40 kg m−2,OR:2.602,P=0.005,compared with BMI 30–34.9 kg m−2),high-density lipoprotein(HdL)-cholesterol levels(OR:0.956,P=0.004),and age(OR:1.047,P=0.016)were factors independently associated with Ed.In conclusion,we demonstrate that,in a primary care-based cohort of nondiabetic young obese men,Ed affected>40%of subjects.A pathological AMS score,the degree of obesity,and age were positively associated with Ed,while elevated HdL-cholesterol levels were inversely associated with the odds of presenting Ed.Further prospective studies are needed to evaluate the long-term consequences of Ed in this population.

Non-human primate pluripotent stem cells for the preclinical testing of regenerative therapies

Non-human primates play a key role in the preclinical validation of pluripotent stem cell-based cell replacement therapies.Pluripotent stem cells used as advanced therapy medical products boost the possibility to regenerate tissues and organs affected by degenerative diseases.Therefore,the methods to derive human induced pluripotent stem cell and embryonic stem cell lines following clinical standards have quickly developed in the last 15 years.For the preclinical validation of cell replacement therapies in non-human primates,it is necessary to generate non-human primate pluripotent stem cell with a homologous quality to their human counterparts.However,pluripotent stem cell technologies have developed at a slower pace in non-human primates in comparison with human cell systems.In recent years,however,relevant progress has also been made with non-human primate pluripotent stem cells.This review provides a systematic overview of the progress and remaining challenges for the generation of non-human primate induced pluripotent stem cells/embryonic stem cells for the preclinical testing and validation of cell replacement therapies.We focus on the critical domains of(1)reprogramming and embryonic stem cell line derivation,(2)cell line maintenance and characterization and,(3)application of non-human primate pluripotent stem cells in the context of selected preclinical studies to treat cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disorders performed in non-human primates.

Complexity of adaptive testing in scenarios defined extensionally

In this paper,we consider a testing setting where the set of possible definitions of the Implementation Under Test(IUT),as well as the behavior of each of these definitions in all possible interactions,are extensionally defined,i.e.,on an element-by-element and case-by-case basis.Under this setting,the problem of finding the minimum testing strategy such that collected observations will necessarily let us decide whether the IUT is correct or not(i.e.,whether it necessarily belongs to the set of possible correct definitions or not)is studied in four possible problem variants:with or without non-determinism;and with or without more than one possible definition in the sets of possible correct and incorrect definitions.The computational complexity of these variants is studied,and properties such as PSPACE-completeness and Log-APX-hardness are identified.

The hippocampus is involved in important brain functions such as learning and memory,spatial navigation,fear processing,and social behavior(dudek et al,2016).The most prominent areas of the hippocampus are typically denoted as the dentate gyrus and the three areas of the cornu ammonis(CA1,CA2,and CA3).discovered by Lorente de Nó(1934),the CA2 region of the hippocampus is a relatively small area interposed between CA3 and CA1 that forms the nexus linking the input of the entorhinal cortex to the output of CA1(Chevaleyre and Siegelbaum,2010).

The significance of U-Pb zircon ages in zoned plutons:the case of the Flamenco pluton, Coastal Range batholith, northern Chile

Compositionally zoned plutons, both layered and concentrically arranged, provide granitic exposures where the mechanisms and timing of the magmatic emplacement processes can be studied. The importance of in-situ geochemical differentiation and the magma replenishment rates are revealed by geochemistry and field relations, together with the increasingly accurate U-Pb geochronology, which has promoted the knowledge about the pluton incremental assembly theories.The Flamenco pluton, located in the Coastal Range of northern Chile, is part of the Upper Triassic to Early Cretaceous Andean intrusives formed in the western active margin of South America, and present a normal zoned structure with mafic magmatic facies(mostly gabbros and Qtz-diorites) close to the contacts with the host metasediments, and tonalites, granodiorites and granites in the inner areas. A combined study of the field relations, geochemistry and zircon geochronology of the magmatic facies was applied to determine the emplacement sequence of the Flamenco pluton, revealing three distinguishable domains separated by metasedimentary septa. The SW area is constituted by mostly homogeneous leucocratic granodiorites that yielded an age of 213 Ma as the best estimation for their emplacement age. distinctive geochemical characteristics, such as the absence of an Eu anomaly, the depletion in HREE, or the highest Sr, Sr/Y and Ce/Yb values among the granodioritic facies of the pluton,involve lower T and/or higher P conditions at the magmatic source according to experimental studies.These conditions were established during an early stage of the Andean magmatic arc building that is firstly defined here as Upper Triassic. The NW and E domains of the pluton were sequentially emplaced between 194 Ma and 186 Ma and both the field relations and the detailed geochronological results suggest that the mafic facies intruded latter in the emplacement sequence. To the NW, Qtz-dioritic and gabbroic externally emplaced pulses gave a younger crystallization age of 186.3 ± 1.8

Composition and Physico-Chemical Properties of Meat from Capons Fed Cereals

Chemical composition, physico-chemical properties and fatty acid composition of breast and drumstick meat from capons （castrated male cockerels） fed cereals were studied. Three groups of capons were reared. One group was fed ad libitum the same commercial diet until the 4th mon of life. The last month of its life, the capons of this group were fed corn. The second and third group of capons were fed the same diet from caponization. The second group was fed mixture of corn （50%） and wheat （50%）. The third group of capons was fed 2/3 corn and 1/3 mixture of corn （50%） and barley （50%）. Capons were reared under free-range conditions and slaughtered at 150 d of age. Caponization was performed at 48 d. No signiifcant effects of feeding in chemical composition, pH, water holding capacity, drip and cooking losses and texture of the meat were observed. The meat of the third group （capons fed 83%corn） was more yellow and showed higher content of C18：2 than that of the other capons.

Origin and evolution of the genera Lonsdaleia and Actinocyathus:Insights for the Mississippian palaeogeography from the western Palaeotethys

Representatives of the subfamily Lonsdaleiinae Chapman,1893 are common in the Mississippian of the western Palaeotethys.A general analysis of the origin,distribution and evolution of that subfamily has been undertaken.The most probable hypothesis for the origin of the genus Lonsdaleia McCoy,1849 is to acquire colonialism via the genus Axophyllum Milne Edwards and Haime,1851.Actinocyathus d'Orbigny,1849 would be a descendant of Lonsdaleia by increasing integration in the colonies.The first occurrences of Lonsdaleia have been recorded in the lower Visean from northern Britain and northern Tianshan Mountains of northwestern China,but the diversification and migration to the whole Palaeotethys only happened in the late Visean.Three hypotheses are proposed on that matter.The Serpukhovian was also a period of migrations and diversification for these genera.Both Lonsdaleia and Actinocyathus have been recorded in Bashkirian refuges,the Sverdrup Basin in northern Laurasia and the Tindouf Basin in northern Africa,respectively.The division of the western Palaeotethys into six subprovinces based on the distribution of corals is proposed.

Effects of a poly(hydroxyalkanoate)elastomer and kraft pulp fibres on biocomposite properties and three-dimensional(3d)printability of filaments for fused deposition modelling

Three-dimensional(3d)printing is a useful technique that allows the creation of objects with complex structures by deposition of successive layers of material.These materials are often from fossil origin.However,efforts are being made to produce environmentally friendly materials for 3d printing.The addition of lignocellulosic fibres to a polymer matrix is one of the alternatives to replace,for instance,glass fibres in composites as reinforcing materials.The fields of biocom-posites and 3d printing open innovative application areas for pulp fibres from the pulp and paper industry.In this work,biocomposites of poly(lactic acid)(PLA),poly(hydroxyalkanoate)(PHA)and kraft pulp fibres were prepared in order to find a suitable formulation for filaments for 3d printing.The effect of two different types of kraft fibres(bleached(B)and unbleached(U))and of PHA on the mechanical and thermal properties of the biocomposites was assessed.The addition of 30%kraft fibres to PLA resulted in an increase of the tensile modulus from 3074 to∼4800 MPa.In the case of biocomposites containing PHA(50%PLA/20%PHA/30%kraft)the increase in modulus was more moderate(PLA+PHA+U:3838 MPa,and PLA+PHA+B:3312 MPa).The tensile strength of PLA(66 MPa)increased to 77 MPa in PLA+kraft biocomposites,while a reduc-tion in strength was observed for PLA+PHA+U(43 MPa)and PLA+PHA+B(32 MPa).Filaments prepared with PLA,PHA and bleached and unbleached pulp fibres showed similar printability of complex geometries,demonstrating that unbleached pulp fibres could also be utilized in the preparation of biocomposites with good mechanical performance and 3d printing properties.
