Justicia secunda, Sorghum bicolor, Gossypiun barbadense and Hibiscus sabdariffa are dye plants traditionally used in Benin for the treatment of anemia. This work is part of the therapeutic valorization of dyes from these plants. Its objective is to characterize their composition in chemical groups and evaluate their harmlessness and their anti-anaemic property in laboratory rats. Anemia was induced in Wistar rats by phenylhydrazine hydrochloride followed by treatment by gavage with hydroethanolic extracts of the plants studied. Phytochemical screening of these extracts made it possible to characterize the major chemical groups, in particular alkaloids, polyphenols including tannins, flavonoids and leucoanthocyanins, as well as reducing compounds and saponosides in the plants studied. cytotoxic analysis of these extracts on Artemia salina shrimp larvae revealed globally high Lc50 values of between 3.14 and 4.64 mg/mL, which testify a priori to the harmlessness of these extracts. The administration of the hydroethanolic extract of each plant to anaemic rats at doses of 2000 mg/kg/d promoted, after 15 days, an increase in hemoglobin levels, the number of red blood cells and hematocrit, going to more than 90% recovery of the hematological parameters involved. The highest rate, 99.06% being that of the species Justicia secunda followed closely by Sorghum bicolor (96.80%) compared to 93.93% obtained by treatment with the Ranferon-12 positive control used. Indeed, these results confirm the therapeutic indication of these plants in the resorption of anemia in traditional medicine.

Humic substances are ubiquitous natural materials found in sediments as a product of biochemical transformation reactions representing a significant proportion of organic carbon cycle on earth. This study involves the analysis of humic substances with special emphasis on humic acids(HAs) in sediments collected from the Kongsfjorden System of Arctic region in June, 2017. The characterization of the isolated HAs were done using various spectroscopic techniques viz. UV-visible, Fluorescence, FTIR and NMR. Isolated HAs were also undergone for elemental analysis along with other characterization. The UV spectral analysis results with a lower E4/E6 ratio suggesting the presence of HAs with high degree of aromaticity and condensation. Indications for the presence of hydroxyl, methyl, methylene, carbonyl, carboxyl, phenol, alcohol and amide groups were obtained from the FTIR spectrums of HAs. NMR spectral characteristics also confirm the presence of OH group as well as the presence of cH protons adjacent to c=X, were X can be any electronegative element. This also confirms the presence of carbonyl group which is also evident in the FTIR spectral studies. Presence of aliphatic regions slightly more dominated with long chain and/or alicyclic moieties rather than methyl groups was also inferred from the results of NMR.

Understanding of fundamental processes and prediction of optimal parameters during the horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing process results in economically effective improvement of oil and natural gas extraction. Although modern analytical and computational models can capture fracture growth, there is a lack of experimental data on spontaneous imbibition and wettability in oil and gas reservoirs for the validation of further model development. In this work, we used neutron im- aging to measure the spontaneous imbibition of water into fractures of Eagle Ford shale with known geometries and fracture orientations. An analytical solution for a set of nonlinear second-order diffe- rential equations was applied to the measured imbibition data to determine effective contact angles. The analytical solution fit the measured imbibition data reasonably well and determined effective con- tact angles that were slightly higher than static contact angles due to effects of in-situ changes in veloci- ty, surface roughness, and heterogeneity of mineral surfaces on the fracture surface. Additionally, small fracture widths may have retarded imbibition and affected model fits, which suggests that aver- age fracture widths are not satisfactory for modeling imbibition in natural systems.

Objective This study compares the anti-tumor effects of single and combination use of clarithromycin and tamoxifen on estrogen receptor (ER) positive breast cancer cell lines,BT-483 and McF-7 as well as triple negative cell line,MBA-MD-231,which acts as a negative *** effect of solid breast tumor inhibition by clarithromycin is also *** BT-483,McF-7 and MBA-MD-231 were cultured in 6-well plates in a 37 ℃ humidified incubator without cO2 for 24 h prior to the addition of the test *** test groups were clarithromycin (Group 1),tamoxifen (Group 2),clarithromycin and tamoxifen (Group 3),and control (Group 4).Group 3 was prepared in 1 to 1 ratio at a concentration of 1.5 mmol/L clarithromycin and 25 μmol/L *** the other hand,1 mm3 solid breast tumors were submerged into various groups as above for 24 *** the harvest day,the proliferation of cancer cells and solid breast tumor samples were measured by WST-1 proliferation reagent while ATP bioluminescence assay was employed to measure the metabolic rate of the three cell *** The proliferation of BT-483 and McF-7 was suppressed most by combination use of clarithromycin and tamoxifen with statistical *** two drugs did not have an inhibitory effect on the hormonal negative cancer *** solid breast tumor samples,all the test groups showed reduced metabolic rate as compared with the control group (Pconclusion combination use of tamoxifen and clarithromycin are effective in suppressing cell proliferation and metabolism rate of breast cancer cells while single use of clarithromycin effectively inhibits the proliferation of solid breast tumor.

There has been much effort to assess the efficacy of sewage treatment plants to remove chemicals with estrogenic activity,but other modes of toxicity have received less *** study assessed the efficacy of advanced tertiary technologies to remove estrogen receptor(ER),aryl hydrocarbon receptor(AhR),retinoic receptor(RAR)agonists and genotoxicity using recombinant gene *** sewage contained ER,AhR and RAR agonists and was *** sludge treatment removed over 69%of the ER,AhR and RAR aqueous phase *** and biologically activated carbon processes removed genotoxicity and most receptor agonists to below detection *** activity was associated with the semi-polar fraction of the aqueous phase and non-polar phase of the influent(maximum 30%).AhR and RAR activities were found in both the aqueous and particulate phases of *** RAR activity was frequently found in the polar fraction of aqueous and particulate phases of the process *** the influent,the greatest RAR activity was found in the polar fraction of the aqueous phase(>65%).Genotoxic activity was detected in all influent fractions but rapidly *** results showed that ER,AhR and RAR agonists were greatly reduced by the advanced tertiary treatment processes.

Hyponatremia, serum sodium 〈 135 mEq/L, is themost common electrolyte abnormality and is in a state of flux. Hyponatremic patients are symptomatic and should be treated but our inability to consistently determine the causes of hyponatremia has hampered the delivery of appropriate therapy. This is especially applicable to differentiating syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis （SIAD） from cerebral salt wasting （cSW） or more appropriately, renal salt wasting （RSW）, because of divergent therapeutic goals, to water-restrict in SIAD and administer salt and water in RSW. Differentiating SIAD from RSW is extremely diffcult because of identical clinical parameters that defne both syndromes and the mindset that cSW occurs rarely. It is thus insuffcient to make the diagnosis of SIAD simply because it meets the defned characteristics. We review the pathophysiology of SIAD and RSW, the evolution of an algorithm that is based on determinations of fractional excretion of urate and distinctive responses to saline infusions to differentiate SIAD from RSW. This algorithm also simplifes the diagnosis of hyponatremic patients due to Addison’s disease, reset osmostat and prerenal states. It is a common perception that we cannot accurately assess the volume status of a patient by clinical criteria. Our algorithm eliminates the need to determine the volume status with the realization that too many factors affect plasma renin, aldosterone, atrial/brain natriuretic peptide or urine sodium concentration to be useful. Reports and increasing recognition of RSW occurring in patients without evidence of cerebral disease should thus elicit the need to consider RSW in a broader group of patients and to question any diagnosis of SIAD. Based on the accumulation of supporting data, we make the clinically important proposal to change cSW to RSW, to eliminate reset osmostat as type c SIAD and stress the need for a new defnition of SIAD.

The laboratory of Radiation Dosimetry and calibration of the Belgian Nuclear Research centre (***) is using thermoluminescence dosimetry for more than thirty years for routine measurements and for R&D investigations. In 2002, it has developed an experimental device based on the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) technique. This device is working with AL2O3:c crystals stimulated by the green line (488 nm) emitted by a 150 mW argon laser. This paper describes this device, its characteristics, some applications in space dosimetry and the R&D works initiated in this field during the next few years.
