Riparian areas in dryland crop regions of the Interm.untain Pacific Northwest have largely been converted to cropland or pasture during the last 140 years. Som. form.rly cultivated floodplains have becom. difficult to farm.enrollm.nt of these lands into conservation program. provides the opportunity to use them.as wildlife habitat and as buffer areas near stream.. Our objective was to evaluate plant com.unity developm.nt on an USDA Conservation Reserve Enhan- cem.nt Program.site in northeastern Oregon from.when the plant was planted in 1999 through 2008. The research was designed as a descriptive study. We established perm.nent line-transects to quantify vegetation establishm.nt and changes in species com.osition through tim.. We collected data in 2000-2001 and 2007-2008. Vegetation cover in 2000-2001 was 100%, dom.nated by tall wheatgrass. Living plant m.terial cover decreased from.98% in 2000-2001 to 33% in 2007 and 68% in 2008;dead plant residue significantly increased and tall wheatgrass cover decreased. Native species were present in sim.lar percentages from.2000 to 2008, although there was a shift from.target to nontarget species. The 1999 seeding can be judged a success because of the ground cover provided and the establishm.nt of one target species, tall wheatgrass. However, the increased ratio of dead to living plant m.terial and shift to non-target annual weed species suggests that m.re active m.nagem.nt (i.e., fire, grazing, or m.wing) of the tall wheatgrass stand is needed to m.intain its productivity and/or a healthy m.x of m.ltiple species.

m.thanotrophic bacteria are currently used industrially for the bioconversion of m.thane-rich natural gas and anaerobic digestion-derived biogas to valuable *** bacteria m.y also serve to m.tigate the negative effects of clim.te change by capturing atm.spheric greenhouse *** genetic tools have previously been developed for genetic and m.tabolic engineering of ***,the available tools for use in m.thanotrophs are significantly underdeveloped com.ared to m.ny other industrially relevant bacteria,which hinders genetic and m.tabolic engineering of these *** such,expansion of the m.thanotroph genetic toolbox is needed to further our understanding of m.thanotrophy and develop biotechnologies that leverage these unique m.crobes for m.tigation and conversion of m.thane to valuable ***,we determ.ned the copy num.er of three broad-host-range plasm.ds in m.thylococcus capsulatus Bath and m.thylosinus trichosporium.OB3b,representing phylogenetically diverse Gam.aproteobacterial and Alphaproteobacterial m.thanotrophs,***,we show that the com.only used synthetic Anderson series prom.ters are functional and exhibit sim.lar relative activity in *** and *** OB3b,but the synthetic series had lim.ted ***,we m.tagenized the native *** particulate m.thane m.nooxygenase prom.ter and identified variants with activity that expand the activity range of synthetic,constitutive prom.ters functional not only in ***,but also in Escherichia ***,the tools developed here advance the m.thanotroph genetic engineering toolbox and represent additional synthetic genetic parts that m.y have broad applicability in Pseudom.nadota bacteria.

Paddy fields play an im.ortant role in global carbon(C) cycling and are an im.ortant source of m.thane(CH_(4)) em.ssions. Insights into the processes influencing the dynam.cs of soil organic C(SOC) in paddy fields are essential for m.intaining global soil C stocks and m.tigating clim.te change. Periphytic biofilm. com.osed of m.croalgae, bacteria, and other m.croorganism. are ubiquitous in paddy fields, where they directly m.diate the transfer of elem.nts at the soil-water interface. However, their contributions to C turnover and exchange have been largely neglected. Periphytic biofilm. affect and participate in soil C dynam.cs by altering both abiotic(e.g., pH and redox potential) and biotic conditions(e.g., m.crobial com.unity com.osition and m.tabolism.. This review sum.arizes the contributions of periphytic biofilm. to soil C cycling processes, including carbon dioxide fixation, SOC m.neralization, and CH_(4) em.ssions. Future research should be focused on: i) the m.chanism. underlying periphytic biofilm.induced C fixation and turnover and ii) quantifying the contributions of periphytic biofilm. to soil C uptake, stabilization, and sequestration in paddy fields.

Real-tim. hybrid sim.lation is an attractive m.thod to evaluate the response of structures under earthquake loads. The m.thod is a variation of the pseudodynam.c testing technique in which the experim.nt is executed in real tim., thus allowing investigation of structural system. with rate-dependent com.onents. Real-tim. hybrid sim.lation is challenging because it requires perform.nce of all calculations, application of displacem.nts, and acquisition of m.asured forces, within a very sm.ll increm.nt of tim.. Furtherm.re, unless appropriate com.ensation for actuator dynam.cs is im.lem.nted, stability problem. are likely to occur during the experim.nt. This paper presents an approach for real-tim. hybrid sim.lation in which com.ensation for actuator dynam.cs is im.lem.nted using a m.del-based feedforward com.ensator. The m.thod is used to evaluate the response of a sem.-active control of a structure em.loying an m. dam.er. Experim.ntal results show good agreem.nt with the predicted responses, dem.nstrating the effectiveness of the m.thod for structural control perform.nce assessm.nt.

Dam.er placem.nt for seism.c control of super-long-span suspension bridges based on the first-order optim.zation m.thod

To ensure the anti-earthquake perform.nces of super-long-span suspension bridges, effective devices should be em.loyed to control the seism.c response of key sections. In this paper, four kinds of assessm.nt functions for seism.c response control effect are form.lated based on the m.chanism.of seism.c response control with dam.ers and the seism.c response characteristics of long-span suspension bridges. A new optim.l placem.nt m.thod of dam.ers using penalty function and first-order optim.zation theory is then proposed. Runyang suspension bridge (RSB) with a m.in span of 1490 m.is then taken as an exam.le. After seism.c response tim.-history analyses on RSB using different placem.nts of dam.ers, the analysis results are optim.zed by em.loying the optim.l placem.nt m.thod and the optim.l placem.nts of dam.ers with the four assessm.nt functions are then achieved respectively. Com.arison of the four optim.l control effects show that different assessm.nt functions can lead to different optim.l placem.nts when the num.er of dam.ers is certain, but all placem.nts of dam.ers can reduce the seism.c response of RSB significantly. The selection of assessm.nt functions and dam.er optim.l placem.nt should be determ.ned by the structural characteristics and by what is considered in the structures. Results also show that the first-order optim.zation is an effective m.thod on determ.ning the optim.l placem.nt of dam.ers.
