Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is an indigenous crop which is highly consumed as an infusion in the South American subtropical forest. It has a high concentration of antioxidant substances, providing health benefits and helping to prevent diseases. The objectives of this work were to characterize an aqueous yerba mate extract by spectrophotometric and chromatographic (HPLC) methods and to study the effect of the freeze-drying process on the polyphenols profile and antioxidant activity, determined by a novel method. An aqueous extract was obtained and lyophilized to obtain a yerba mate powder with antioxidant properties. The extracts showed a high polyphenol content, determined by Folin-Ciocalteau and HPLC, and a high antioxidant activity towards the DPPH· radical and after the recently developed method of photochemiluminescence. A linear correlation was found between Folin-Ciocalteau and DPPH methods for lyophilized samples. HPLC analysis allowed determining antioxidant components like rutin, caffeine and chlorogenic acid. Lyophilization caused a decrease in total polyphenol content and antiradical activity of the extracts and this fact was mainly attributed to changes in the chlorogenic acid related compounds and rutin structures, after their photochemiluminescence data. The photoluminiscent method proves to be an advantageous approach for antioxidant capacity determination.

Dear Editor,The tumor suppressor gene CDKN1B,encoding for the p27^(Kip1)(p27)protein,defines the smallest region of deletion on chromosome 12p13 described in clonal hematopoietic disorders(CHDs)[1].Among them,myelodysplastic syndromes(MDSs)display typical onset in the elderly and an indolent behavior that may evolve in acute myeloid leukemia(AML)[2].Recent evidences support a model of parallel clonal evolution at the stem or progenitor cell level and implicate the need of more preclinical,translational and clinical research to identify better ways to timely target clones that may evolve toward malignancy[3,4].

Reliability of enzyme assays in dried blood spots for diagnosis of 4 lysosomal storage disorders

Introduction: Lysosomal storage disorders (LSD) are inherited diseases caused, in the majority of them, by the deficiency of lysosomal enzymatic activities. Ob-jectives: We aimed to analyze the usefulness of DBS samples for diagnosis of 4 LSDs, with the availability of a large quantity of patient samples. Design and methods: Blood samples from previously diagnosed patients with Fabry, Gaucher, Hunter, and Maro-teaux-Lamy syndromes and normal control individ-uals, were collected and dispen-sed in filter paper, and used for enzymatic activity determination. Results: Diagnosis of hemi/homo-zygous patients with Fabry, Hunter and Maroteaux-Lamy diseases using DBS samples showed ideal parameters of 100% sensitivity and specificity. DBS assay for Gaucher disease would need a posterior confirmatory step. Conclusions: Leukocyte measu-rement is the only reliable way to diagnose Gaucher disease. For Hunter, Fabry and Maroteaux-Lamy disorders discrimination between patients and controls seems adequate by DBS.

Association of Morphology and Immunophenotype in Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphomas with Bone Marrow Infiltration in a Sample Mexican Population

Introduction: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), not otherwise specified, is a large B-cell lymphoma with a diffuse growth pattern and aggressive clinical course. It is divided in subgroups according to its morphology, immunophenotype, and primary site. Dissemination to bone marrow occurs in 11% to 35% of cases and can be of concordant or discordant morphology. Objective: To examine the association, the type of bone marrow involvement in relation to the primary site, morphology, immunohistochemistry of DLBCLs and to determine the cases of Epstein-Barr virus positive DLBCLs. Materials and Methods: We reviewed lymph node and extranodal biopsies as well as the respective bone marrow biopsies in all cases of DLBCL diagnosed in the Hospital General de México during the period from 2002 to 2010. We used immunohystochemistry for immunophenotype identification (Hans’s algorithm) and an in-situ hybridization technique to detect presence of Epstein Barr encoded RNA (EBER). Results: We included 108 patients with a mean age of 51.9 years, 59 (55%) were men. DLBCL involved lymph nodes in 60% of cases and palatine tonsils in 13%. The centroblastic variant predominated (80%) and 58% originated from activated B-cells. Infiltration of bone marrow was present in 30% of cases and was discordant in 55% of these cases. Correlation between morphology and bone marrow infiltration was statistically significant (P = 0.0003). Presence of Epstein-Barr virus was demonstrated in 15% of patients older than 50 years. Conclusions: Dissemination to bone marrow occurred in 30% of cases and discordant involvement was most common. DLBCL originating from activated B-lymphocytes predominated and the most common extranodal sites were palatine tonsils, suggesting that our population has a clinical behavior similar to Asiatic populations.

Thirty years of scientific research on second-generation antipsychotic drugs in Japan: A bibliometric analysis

Aims:Research on second-generation antipsychotic drugs (SGAs) has experienced great development in last *** did a bibliometric study on the scientific publications on SGAs in ***: With theEMBASEandMEDLINEdatabases, we chose papers published from Japan with SGA descriptors. Price’s law and Bradford’s law has been used as bibliometric indicators for quantitating production and dispersion, respectively, of published papers on SGAs. We also calculated the participation index of different countries, and correlated those bibliometric data with some social and health data from Japan (such as totalper capitaexpenditure on health and gross domestic expenditure on research and development). Results: A sum of 669 original documents were published from Japan from 1982 to 2011. Those results fulfilled Price’s law, with scientific production on SGAs showing exponential growth (correlation coefficientr= 0.9261, as against anr= 0.8709 after linear adjustment). The most studied SGAs in Japan wererisperidone (n= 192), aripiprazole (n= 109), and olanzapine (n= 106). Division of documents into Bradford zones yielded a nucleus occupied exclusively by theProgress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry(49 articles). Those publications were in 157 different journals. Seven of the first 10 frequently used journals had an impact factor of being greater than 3. Conclusions: The SGA publications in Japan have been through exponential growth over the studied period, without evidence of reaching a saturation point.

Hydraulic Jump in the Gulf of California

Acoustic Doppler current profiles and water density profiles were measured over the 280 m deep continental slope of the Gulf of California to elucidate the bathymetric effect on zooplankton distribution. These measurements were combined with water velocity and density simulations from the Regional Ocean Model System with and without the influence of Coriolis acceleration. The data revealed an acceleration of the near-bottom flow as it moved toward increasing depths. This acceleration was produced by the adjustment of the isopycnals to bathymetry (hydraulic jump). Zooplankton patches moved downward at the continental slope and then upward, thus exhibiting wave patterns. Model outputs without the effect of Coriolis acceleration also suggested that vertical zooplankton concentration followed a wave pattern. However, when Coriolis acceleration was added to the momentum equation, the horizontal zooplankton distribution was enhanced, which reduced the vertical zooplankton concentration observed over irregular bathymetries. Coriolis acceleration was responsible for horizontal dispersal of up to 20% of the total zooplankton concentration located over the wave trough.

Prevalence of Potential Drug-Drug Interactions in Hospitalized Surgical Patients

The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence and describe the characteristics of pDDIs （potential drug-drug interactions） in medical prescriptions of hospitalized surgical patients. In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed 370 medical prescriptions from the surgery unit of a Mexican public teaching hospital. The identification and classification of potential drug-drug interactions were performed with the Micromedex 2.0 electronic drug information database. Results were analyzed with descriptive statistics and we estimated OR （odds ratio） to determine associated risk factors. From the study, it was found that the prevalence of potential drug-drug interactions was 45.9%. A total of 385 interactions were identified. Of these, 54.3% were classified as major and 60.5% as pharmacodynamic. Prescriptions for more than seven drugs （OR =7.33, CI （confidence interval） = 4.59-11.71） and advanced age 〉 60 years, （OR = 1.79, CI = 1.06-2.74） were positively associated with the presence of potential drug-drug interactions. We found a high prevalence of clinically relevant pDDIs in the surgery unit. In view of this outcome, the safety of drug combinations in hospitalized surgical patients should be evaluated during the prescription process in order to prevent adverse events.

Validation of Educational Video to Promote Self-Efficacy in Preventing Childhood Diarrhea

The aim of this study was to evaluate and to validate an educational video to promote maternal self-efficacy in preventing childhood diarrhea with women assisted in a health unit. Validation study, developed with 17 mothers whose children were under five years old, was analyzed on scenes of an educational video according to the validity of appearance (clarity/comprehension) and of content (relevance). The scenes were considered clear and comprehensive with a perceptual above 70% and with an average of 96.9% of agreement. Regarding the relevance, the agreement was maintained between 94% and 100%, however only scenes 03 and 13 presented 76.6% and 70.6% of agreement respectively. Global Content Validation Index of the educational video scenes was 0.97 meaning an excellent level of agreement among mothers. The video showed to be a valid and a trustworthy material to promote maternal self-efficacy in preventing childhood diarrhea. Therefore, it is important that the material is disseminated in other health services so that other mothers may have contact with the same, providing greater reliability of the material.
