The effect of permeable walls and magnetic field on the peristaltic flow of a Carreau fluid in a tapered asymmetric channel is studied. The tapered asymmetric channel is normally created due to the intra-uterine fluid flow induced by myometrial contractions and it was simulated by asymmetric peristaltic fluid flow in a two-dimensional infinite non-uniform channel. The analysis has been performed under long wavelength and low- Reynolds number assumptions to linearize the governing flow equations. A series solution in respect of a small Weissenberg number is obtained for the stream function, axial pressure gradient and shear stress. Time average of pressure rise and frictional force on the upper wall has also been computed using numerical integration. The results have been presented graphically for the various interested physical parameters. It is observed that for Carreau fluids the peristalsis works as a pump against a greater pressure rise compared with a Newtonian fluid, while there exists no significant difference in free pumping flux for Newtonian and Carreau fluids in the tapered asymmetric channel.

Identification of RAPD marker linked with fertility-restoring gene of cytoplasmic male sterile lines in upland cotton

Bulked segregant analysis was employed to construct two mixed DNA pools to screen the RAPd marker linked with the fertilityrestoring gene（\%Rf\-i）\% of upland cotton. A total of 425 arbitrary 10mer oligonucleotide primers were screened on two DNA pools, bulked male fertile and sterile DNAs isolated from BC\-3 segregating population of （06132R×Simian No. 3）. Three primers produced repeatable polymorphisms between the paired bulks and their parents. DNA was extracted and amplified with these three primers for 92 plants of （Zhong 12A1×06132R）F\-2. Based on the male fertility scoring and RAPD amplification, it is found that one RAPD marker fragment designated OPV15 300 was linked with the fertilityrestoring gene （R f \-1） with a recombination value of 13.0±2.57%.

An improvement in pancreatic cancer treatment represents an urgent medical goal. Late diagnosis and high intrinsic resistance to conventional chemotherapy has led to a dismal overall prognosis that has remained unchanged during the past decades. Increasing knowledge about the molecular pathogenesis of the disease has shown that genetic alterations, such as mutations of K-ras, and especially epigenetic dysregulation of tumor-associated genes, such as silencing of the tumor suppressor p16ink4a, are hallmarks of pancreatic cancer. Here, we describe genes that are commonly affected by epigenetic dysregulation in pancreatic cancer via DNA methylation, histone acetylation or miRNA (microRNA) expression, and review the implications on pancreatic cancer biology such as epithelial-mesenchymal transition, morphological pattern formation, or cancer stem cell regulation during carcinogenesis from PanIN (pancreatic intraepithelial lesions) to invasive cancer and resistance development. Epigenetic drugs, such as DNA methyltransferases or histone deactylase inhibitors, have shown promising preclinical results in pancreatic cancer and are currently in early phases of clinical development. Combinations of epigenetic drugs with established cytotoxic drugs or targeted therapies are promising approaches to improve the poor response and survival rate of pancreatic cancer patients.

AIM: To examine the ability of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor (CDKI) roscovitine (Rosco) to enhance the antitumor effects of conventional chemotherapeutic agents acting by different mechanisms against human colorectal cancer. METHODS: Human colorectal cancer cells were treat-ed, individually and in combination, with Rosco, taxol, 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), doxorubicine or vinblastine. The antiproliferative effects and the type of interaction of Rosco with tested chemotherapeutic drugs were de-termined. Cell cycle alterations were investigated by fluorescence-activated cell sorter FACS analysis. Apop-tosis was determined by DNA fragmentation assay. RESULTS: Rosco inhibited the proliferation of tumor cells in a time-and dose-dependent manner. The ef-ficacies of all tested chemotherapeutic drugs were markedly enhanced 3.0-8.42 × 103 and 130-5.28 × 103 fold in combination with 5 and 10 μg/mL Rosco, re-spectively. The combination of Rosco and chemothera-peutic drugs inhibited the growth of human colorectal cancer cells in an additive or synergistic fashion, and in a time and dose dependent manner. Rosco induced apoptosis and synergized with tested chemothera-peutic drugs to induce efficient apoptosis in human colorectal cancer cells. Sequential, inverted sequential and simultaneous treatment of cancer cells with combi-nations of chemotherapeutic drugs and Rosco arrested the growth of human colorectal cancer cells at various phases of the cell cycle as follows: Taxol/Rosco (G2/M-and S-phases), 5-FU/Rosco (S-phase), Dox/Rosco (S-phase) and Vinb/Rosco (G2/M-and S-phases). CONCLUSION: Since the eff icacy of many anticancer drugs depends on their ability to induce apoptotic cell death, modulation of this parameter by cell cycle inhibi-tors may provide a novel chemo-preventive and chemo-therapeutic strategy for human colorectal cancer.

A general rule of strength and plasticity was proposed for three typical wrought Al alloys(2xxx,6xxx,and 7xxx)subjected to different aging *** of the work-hardening processes and dislocation configurations in tensile and compressive testing reveal that this general rule arises because there is a common mechanism for these three kinds of wrought alloys whereby the tendency for cross-slip increases monotonously with aging *** analyzing the strain hardening exponent and the stacking fault energy,it is demonstrated that the change in the dislocation slip mode is attributed mainly to the formation of second phases rather than to the matrix ***,a new work-hardening model was proposed for wrought Al alloys containing second phases and this explains the interaction between dislocations and second phases and other relevant experimental *** work is therefore beneficial for quantitatively investigating and optimizing the strength and plasticity of wrought aluminum alloys.

In situ Al2O3 whiskers reinforced Ti-Al intermetallic composites were fabricated at ~1200℃ by reaction sintering of cold-consolidated fillets consisting mainly of Ti, Al, and different additives. The phases and microstructures of the sintered composites were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The process of synthesis was investigated using differential thermal analysis (DTA). The effects of processing parameters and additives on the microstructures of the composites and the development of whisker were examined. It is found that the morphology of the whisker is strongly influenced by the additives, the exothermal reaction process, and the processing parameters.

Background Asthma is a chronic airway disease with inflammation characterized by physiological changes （airway hyper-responsiveness, AHR） and pathological changes （inflammatory cells infiltration and mucus production）. Eosinophils play a key role in the allergic inflammation. But the causative relationship between eosinophils and airway inflammation is hard to prove. One of the reasons is lack of activation marker of murine eosinophils. We investigated the expression of CD69 on murine eosinophils in vitro, the relationship between the expression of CD69 on eosinophils from peripheral blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and on airway inflammation in asthmatic mice. Methods Eosinophils from peripheral blood of IL-5 transgenic mice （Nj.1638） were purified. Mice were divided into five groups： wild type mice sensitized and challenged with saline （WS group）, wild type mice sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin （WO group）, IL-5^-/- mice sensitized and challenged with saline and transferred with purified eosinophils （ISE group）, IL-5^-/- mice sensitized and challenged with OVA and transferred with purified eosinophils （IOE group）, IL-5^-/- mice sensitized and challenged with OVA and transferred with purified eosinophils, pretreated with anti CD4 monoclonal antibody （IOE＋antiCD4mAb group）. IL-5^-/- mice were sensitized with OVA at day 0 and day 14, then challenged with OVA aerosol. On days 24, 25, 26 and 27 purified eosinophils were transferred intratracheally to IL-5^-/- mice. On day 28, blood and BALF were collected and CD69 expression on eosinophils measured by flowcytometry. Results Purified eosinophils did not express CD69. But eosinophils cultured with PMA＋MA, IFN- T, IL-5 or GM-CSF expressed CD69 strongly. Eosinophils from blood of WO, WS group did not express CD69 at all. The numbers of eosinophils in BALF of WO group, IOE group, ISE group and IOE＋antiCD4mAb group were significantly higher than in mice of WS group which did not have eosinophils at all. CD69
