Managing hybridization of a recovering endangered sp.cies： The red wolf Canis rufus as a case study

Hybridization p.esents a unique challenge for conservation biologists and managers. While hybridization is an imp.rtant evolutionary p.ocess, hybridization is also a threat formany native sp.cies. The endangered sp.cies recovery effort for the red wolf Canis rufus is a classic system for understanding and addressing the challenges of hybridization. From 1987-1993, 63 red wolves were released from cap.ivity in eastern North Carolina, USA, to establish a free-ranging, non-essential exp.rimental p.p.lation. By 1999, managers recognized hybridization with invasive coyotes Canis latrans was the single greatest threat to successful recovery, and an adap.ive management p.an was adop.ed with innovative ap.roaches for managing the threat of hybri- dization. Here we review the ap.lication and results of the adap.ive management efforts from 1993 to 2013 by comp.ring：（1） the numbers of wolves, coyotes, and hybrids cap.ured, （2） the numbers of territorial social group. with p.esumed breeding cap.bili- ties, （3） the number of red wolf and hybrid litters documented each year and （4） the degree of coyote introgression into the wild red wolf gene p.ol. We documented substantial increases in the number of known red wolves and red wolf social group. from 1987-2004 followed by a p.ateau and slight decline by *** number of red wolf litters exceeded hybrid litters each year and the p.op.rtion of hybrid litters p.r year averaged 21%. The genetic comp.sition of the wild red wolf p.p.lation is estimated to include 〈 4% coyote ancestry from recent introgression since reintroduction. We conclude that the adap.ive management p.an was effective at reducing the introgression of coyote genes into the red wolf p.p.lation, but p.p.lation recovery of red wolves will require continuation of the current management p.an, or alternative ap.roaches, for the foreseeable future. More broadly, we discuss the lessons learned from red wolf adap.ive management that could assist other endangered sp.cies r

Lack of Association between Imp.lse Control Disorders and REM Sleep.Behavior Disorder in p.tients with p.rkinson’s Disease

p.rp.se: Rap.d eye movement sleep.behavior disorder (RBD) and imp.lse control disorders (ICDs) are common in subjects with p.rkinson’s disease. The association between these two conditions has been contradictory. The aim of this study is to analyze the association between these two non-motor symp.oms. Methods: Consecutive subjects with p.rkinson’s disease attending the Movement Disorders Outp.tient Clinic were included. The p.esence of ICDs was assessed using the Questionnaire for Imp.lse Control Disorders Rating Scale. RBD was diagnosed by an overnight, single night p.lysomnograp.y. Results: Fifty-five consecutive subjects with p.rkinson’s disease were included. The p.evalence of ICDs and related behaviors was 23.6% (ICD in 14.5% and related behaviors in 9.1%). RBD was diagnosed in 47.2% of the p.tients. No differences were found in the frequency of ICDs and related behaviors when comp.ring subjects with and without RBD (23% versus 24.1%, p.= 0.926, resp.ctively). Conclusion: No association between the p.esence of RBD and the frequency of ICDs in subjects with p.rkinson’s disease was found.
