Bacteriological Quality of a Forage Grass (<i>pennisetum purpureum Schumach</i>) Used in Constructed Wetland Removing Domestic Wastewater pathogenic Microorganism

Constructed Wetlands (CWs) are an adequate wastewater treatment system with possibility to generate income, in particular by the use of plants of economic interest. However, very few studies deal with the bacteriological quality of plants after wastewater treatment. Thermotolerant coliforms and Sulfite-reducing bacteria were investigated on the above-ground biomass of a species of forage plant (pennisetum purpureum) as well as their removal in an experimental pilot consisting of four beds, for three months. Two beds were planted and two unplanted beds were used as control. Germs in the wastewater were significantly reduced in both filtrates, with higher removal efficiency of 97.4% for Thermotolerant coliforms and 87.5% for Sulfite-reducing bacteria, in the planted bed. Wastewater treatment resulted in bacteriological contamination of the above-ground plant biomass with a significant decreases in number of germs from 660 to 28 CFU/g (Thermotolerant coliforms) and from 15 to 0 CFU/g (Sulfite-reducing bacteria), when the harvest height increased from the base to the upper end of the plants. However, averages of 305 CFU/g of Thermotolerant coliforms and 5 CFU/g of Sulfite-reducing bacteria were obtained in the above-ground plant biomass which would not present any potential risks for a possible use of the plant biomass as fodder. Thus, the use of forage plant suggests good prospects for upgrading said plants for animal feed.

prioritising, downplaying and self-preservation: processes significant to coping in advanced cancer patients

To date there has been little research that describes the relation between the individual and their environment as the foundation for the coping process in advanced cancer patients. The aim of the study was to identify and describe, from a patient perspective, processes that are significant to coping with advanced cancer. We used the method Grounded Theory as described by Strauss and Corbin. Data were generated through qualitative interviews. A total of 18 interviews were conducted. The central theme was “The struggle to be a participant in one’s own life”. This theme involved three processes: prioritising, downplaying and self-preservation, each of which in different ways endeavours to either maintain or re-establish the feeling of being a participant. The awareness of the processes complement existing knowledge about coping in advanced cancer patients, by showing how patients make use of meaning-based coping efforts to increase their experience of being a participant in their own lives.

Effects of taurine on proliferation and apoptosis of hepatic stellate cells in vitro

BACKGROUND: Hepatic fibrosis, a common response to chronic liver injury, is characterized by increased production of extracellular matrix components, whose major part is produced by hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). Taurine is a sulfur containing beta-amino acid rich in human body, and our previous experiments showed that it can inhibit the deposition of the extracellular matrix in the damaged liver. This work was to investigate the effects of taurine on proliferation and apoptosis of HSC and its possible mechanism. METHODS.. Risk-Mitigation for Antimicrobial Resistance in Danish Swine Herds at a National Level

In Denmark, actions to mitigate the risk related to antimicrobial resistance have been put in place continuously. Due to an increase in the consumption of antimicrobials in the Danish pig production further actions were implemented in July 2010. These were： a voluntary ban on use of cephalosporin in Danish swine herds for a 2-year period and a so-called Yellow Card scheme from the DVFA （Danish Veterinary and Food Administration）. Farmers with the highest use of antibiotics receive a Yellow Card. In 2010, approximately 10% of Danish herds were above the Yellow Card threshold value. The consumption of antimicrobials in pigs is evaluated as ADD （animal daily doses） per 100 animals over the last 9 months （by age group）. Current permit limits for a Yellow Card in ADD/100 animal days are 5.2 （sows and piglets）, 28 （weaners）, and 8 （finishers）. In July 2010, farmers with an antimicrobial use close to these limits were warned by the DVFA, that unless actions were taken to reduce their antimicrobial use, they would receive a Yellow Card in December 2010. The means are, for instance, restrictions on oral medication usage and supervision from the authorities to which most expenses are to be covered by the farmer. The warning resulted in a decrease in the national consumption to pigs of 12.5% during the last half-year of 2010 compared to the same half-year in 2009. This decrease continued into 2011 where the consumption in January-February was 24.5% lower than for January-February 2010.

In this study,structural theory was used to examine the geometric configuration of channels embedded inside an object in the presence of internal heat generation for cooling by a heat transfer *** growth and development of gas transmission lines and the lack of up-to-date integrated information systems have made the design and maintenance of pipelines,as well as the handling of problems caused by various accidents in the pipeline,very complex in many *** accurate descriptive and spatial information in tolls on gas transmission line maps such as pipes,booster stations,valves,and forks in a spatial reference database can engage planners,operators,and paramedics in a variety of *** are used to help in the direction of optimal and purposeful ***,in this paper,by considering appropriate laboratory conditions and numerical experiments and calculations,it is possible to determine the optimal attraction of duct holes for cooling components of the gas transmission system,so that the industry can produce and developed gas transmission without *** this study,in addition to studying the geometric characteristics of channel spacing and their length,the dimensions of a specific channel for reducing the maximum produced temperature are also discussed.

气候变化是当前社会关注的一个问题,其后果在全球范围内的感知日渐强烈。除了国家领土和社区外,水坝等大型基础设施也可能容易受到气候变化的影响,且需要能够抵御相关影响。因此,在批准这些大型基础设施项目时,应对与其相关的气候变化风险进行全面评估。一些国际指南建议将气候变化风险评估纳入环境影响评价(EIA)过程。若干国家相应更新的EIA法规也体现了这一点。基于对过去20年发表的科学文献的系统回顾,本文探讨了科学界如何将气候变化风险纳入大坝环境影响评价中。调查结果表明,EIA在应对气候变化风险方面的潜力得到了广泛认可。然而,针对风险评估分析如何被纳入大坝EIA当前实践的系统研究却很少。这一差距表明围绕该主题具有研究潜力和研究机会。

应用分形理论与方法,结合陕北黄土高原1∶5万DEM数据,通过河网分形维数和稳定性系数计算,研究了陕北黄土地貌空间分布特征。结果表明:(1)陕北黄土高原不同地貌类型分形结构复杂程度各异,表现出不同大小的水系分维值和稳定性系数,其中,黄土峁状、梁状丘陵沟壑区地貌结构最为复杂,分维值最大,稳定性系数最小。黄土残塬、黄土塬区分维值次之。黄土—风沙过渡区地形结构简单,地势相对平坦,分维值最低,稳定性程度最高。(2)以分形参数作为定量化指标进行黄土地貌特征研究是可行的,DEM数据集是研究过程中的核心和基础。分形值所描述的分形特征与地貌类型、地质结构等有一定的相关性。此外,对分形几何的地学机理还需要进一步分析。
