Identification of compatibility between ooplasmic factor and sperm gene in the intersubspecific crosses involving DDK and PWK mice strains

The DDK strain （Mus musculus domesticus） of inbred mouse has a unique peculiarity known as DDK syndrome. The DDK females are mostly infertile when crossed with males of other inbred strains, while DDK males exhibit normal fertility in the reciprocal crosses, as intrastrain matings. This DDK syndrome has been demonstrated to be caused by an incompatibility system between DDK ooplasmic factor and the sperm gene of other strains owing to the ovum mutant （Ore） locus on mouse Chromosome 11. Recently, it was reported that DDK females are fully fertile when crossed to males of MOM （M. m. molossinus） and CASP （M. m. castaneus） strains, indicating that no incompatibilities exist between DDK ooplasmic factor and sperm gene of MOM or CASP males. In the present study, DDK females were found to be also fully fertile when crossed to the males of PWK wild-derived inbred strain （originated from Czech Republic wild mice, M. m. musculus）. The crosses of DDK females × F1 （DDK9 × PWK♀） males also resulted in normal fertility. Furthermore, the transmission ratios of Om alleles from these Fl males to their backcross N2 offspring are 50%：50% as genotyped by microsatellite markers closely linked to Om locus. Moreover, it was demonstrated that PWK females are also fully fertile when crossed to DDK males. All above results indicated that no incompatibility exists between ooplasmic factor and sperm gene in the intersubspecific crosses with DDK and PWK strains. PWK strain would also be useful for further investigations on the DDK syndrome, and DDK strain can be used more widely for various studies in the mouse.

Decidual macrophages (dMΦ) are distinct from the conventional macrophages present in other tissues and express M2macrophage markers, but the molecular mechanisms of formation and the roles of M2 MΦ during pregnancy have not beencompletely elucidated. The crosstalk between decidual natural killer cells (dNK) and dMΦ plays an important role in themaintenance of maternal–fetal immune tolerance. Here, CXCL16 derived from first-trimester trophoblast cells induces thepolarization of human M2 macrophages. The M2 MΦ polarized by CXCL16 exhibit decreased interleukin-15 production, whichfacilitates the inactivation of NK cells. The cytotoxicity of NK cells is attenuated by the CXCL16-polarized M2 MΦ. The data shown inthe present study provide evidence to support the hypothesis that CXCL16 secreted by trophoblast cells is a key molecule involvedin decidual M2 MΦ polarization, which in turn regulates the killing ability of NK cells, thereby contributing to the homeostatic andimmune-tolerant milieu required for successful fetal development.

Fault diagnosis plays an irreplaceable role in the normal operation of equipment.A fault diagnosis model is often required to be interpretable for increasing the trust between humans and the *** to the understandable knowledge expression and transparent reasoning process,the belief rule base(BRB)has extensive applications as an interpretable expert system in fault *** is an effective means to weaken the subjectivity of experts in BRB,where the interpretability of BRB may be ***,to obtain a credible result,the weakening factors of interpretability in the BRB-based fault diagnosis model are firstly analyzed,which are manifested in deviation from the initial judgement of experts and over-optimization of *** these two factors,three indexes are proposed,namely the consistency index of rules,consistency index of the rule base and over-optimization index,tomeasure the interpretability of the *** both the accuracy and interpretability of amodel,an improved coordinate ascent(I-CA)algorithmis proposed to fine-tune the parameters of the fault diagnosis model based on *** I-CA,the algorithm combined with the advance and retreat method and the golden section method is employed to be one-dimensional search ***,the random optimization sequence and adaptive step size are proposed to improve the accuracy of the ***,a case study of fault diagnosis in aerospace relays based on BRB is carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

White spot syndrome virus(WSSV)-resistant molecular markers were screened from the selectively bred new variety ‘Huanghai No. 2' of Fenneropenaeus chinensis using unlabeled-probe high-resolution melting(HRM) technique. After the artificial infection with WSSV, the first 96 dead shrimps and the last 96 surviving shrimps were collected, representing WSSV-susceptible and-resistant populations, respectively. The genotypes at well-developed 39 single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) loci were obtained. As revealed in the Chi-square test, 3 SNPs, genotype A/A of contig C364-89 AT, genotype A/A of C2635-527 CA and genotype C/T of contig C12355-592 CT, were positively correlated with disease-resistance traits. Other 2 SNPs, genotype G/G of contig C283-145 AG and genotype C/C of contig C12355-592 CT, were negatively correlated. Moreover, analysis with Blast X program for disease-resistant SNPs indicated that 3 contigs, Contig283, Contig364 and Contig12355, matched to the functional genes of effector caspase of Penaeus monodon, peptide transporter family 1-like protein, and 40 S ribosomal protein S2 of Perca flavescens with high sequence similarity. The results will be helpful to provide theoretical and technical supports for molecular marker-assisted selective breeding of F. chinensis.

Study on the transverse structures across Taiwan Strait

The mountain ranges are almost NE- or NNE-trending in mainland and Taiwan island across the strait. But a number of correspondent transverse structures across Taiwan Strait have been identified on the basis of morphology, surface structure, deep seismic survey and gravity field etc. Moreover, it is inferred from the square or/and rectangular shape of the isoseist maps of 8 M≥6 earthquakes occurring in the western foothill plain of Taiwan that there is an apparent segmentation of the Taiwan Island along the N-S orientation. This has been verified from the GPS's results of the ground motions measured during the Chi-Chi earthquake in 1999. As a matter of fact, the transverse structures within the Taiwan Island could be correlated with more salient NW- and EW-trending structures in the mainland of Fujian than in Taiwan. The investigation of the transverse structures across Taiwan Strait is conducive to realizing the geology within the strait. Hence, the tectonic sketch map of the strait as well as mainland and island drawn in this context shows NW- and EW-trending structures for the study area.

Growth and nutrient dynamics of Betula alnoides seedlings under exponential fertilization

Betula alnoides is a fast-growing hardwood species grown in large plantations in Southeast Asia and South *** requirements for producing robus seedlings,growth and nutrient dynamics were investigated using exponential fertilization *** collar diameter,height,dry mass and nutrient contents of seedlings increased exponentially in all fertilization treatments as time ***,with water soluble fertilizer（Plant Products plus microelements N–P2O5–K2O：20–20–20）,300 mg N seedling-1was *** analysis revealed that P was the most responsive nutrient element followed by N and *** of N and K were evident in the plants without N addition,which induced initial P sufficiency and then luxury consumption probably due to the antagonistic interaction between N and *** deficiencies of N,P and K were mostly observed in al exponential regimes during the experiment because seedling growth rate exceeded nutrient uptake rate,inferring that further study on improving the nutrient uptake efficiency is *** of relationships among nutrient supply,dry mass,N content and N concentration demonstrated that 100–400 mg N seedling-1induced sufficiency to luxury consumption of nitrogen without significant change in dry mass,and 400 mg N seedling-1is recommended to apply for nutrient loading of seedlings before *** findings will help improve seedling quality and enhance the production of robust seedlings for plantation forestry of this species.

Compound-specific stable isotope analysis of individual amino acids(CSIA-AA)has been widely used in ecological and biogeochemical *** has been proven to be powerful in tracing the diet sources and trophic ***,assessing the N sources of mesopelagic fishes has been inconclusive because the mesopelagic fishes’unique domain(water depth ranged from 0 to 1000 m)and unresolved nitrogen isotopes of various *** study proposes a new method for coupling instruments(ion chromatography and PreconIRMS)and chemical method of oxidation-reduction of amino acids,and also combinedδ15N of AAs withδ13C of fatty acids(FAs)to analyze the trophic interactions of mesopelagic fishes in the South China Sea(SCS).AAs were isolated by ion chromatography with high peak resolution and collected by an automated fraction *** chemical method then converted the AAs into N2 O with a robust oxidation yields and suitable molar ratio of NH2 OH ***,theδ15N of AAs at 20 nmol were measured with a reasonable precision(<0.6‰).With this method,this study report the first batch high precisionδ15N of AAs andδ13C of FAs of mesopelagic fishes collected from *** luetkeni,Chauliodus minimus and Bathygadus antrodes showed similarδ13C values of 20:4 n-6(~-28‰),while Argyropelecus affinis and Stomias had similar values(~-32‰).These results reflect that mesopelagic fishes had complex diet *** increase of 4‰inδ15N of glutamic acid(Glu)was found between piscivorous and planktivorous fishes,which might suggest a trophic discrimination factor of mesopelagic fishes in the *** study usedδ13C of 20:4 n-6 to reveal the diet sources of mesopelagic fishes andδ15N of Glu to clarify trophic level between piscivorous and planktivorous ***,this combinative method could therefore ultimately be applied in a variety of deep-sea ecosystem.

Influence of Headland Breakwaters on Morphological Processes at Longfengtou Beach in Haitan Bay,Facing the Taiwan Strait

Breakwaters can be used as artificial headlands in beach nourishment to mitigate coastal erosion. Longfengtou Beach, located on the southwest coast of Haitan Bay facing the Taiwan Strait on the northeast, suffers severe erosion, where the monsoon causes significant season hydrodynamic variations. Headland breakwaters are intended to be employed to mitigate coastal erosion. A 2D sediment transport model is established using MIKE21 based on current-wave coupling and calibrated by measured data. Summer and winter wave conditions are chosen as characteristic weak and strong waves respectively. The numerical results of suspended sediment concentration and seasonal morphological evolution are compared under the conditions with and without the headland breakwaters. Sediment transport in summer can be regarded as mainly determined by current field, while in winter wave effect is strong enough to change current field. The northern breakwater, nearly perpendicular to the ebb current direction, obstructs the currents and decreases velocity of the ebb currents, and confines the water carrying sediments within the protection area during the flood period. The southern breakwater also breaks the waves in advance and significantly reduces the hydrodynamic effects during the flood period and maintains high suspended sediment concentration in the protection area. In general, two headland breakwaters decrease the erosion near the beach and enlarge the deposition area, which play a significant role in prevention of sediment loss in nearshore area and mitigate coastal erosion.

This paper proposes a novel graph-based transductive learning algorithm based on manifold regularization. First, the manifold regularization was introduced to probabilistic discriminant model for semi-supervised classification task. And then a variation of the expectation maximization （EM） algorithm was derived to solve the optimization problem, which leads to an iterative algorithm. Although our method is developed in probabilistic framework, there is no need to make assumption about the specific form of data distribution. Besides, the crucial updating formula has closed form. This method was evaluated for text categorization on two standard datasets, 20 news group and Reuters-21578. Experiments show that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art graph-based transductive learning methods.
