Simulation and Experimental Research on Liquid Spreading in a Wire-Sawn Kerf

The significance of liquids in abrasive wire sawing has been demonstrated in several studies.However,the perfor-mance of its spreading behavior is limited by the current development trend,where the wafer has a larger area and the kerf is narrower.Moreover,there are very few studies on the liquid spreading behavior in wire-sawn kerfs.Therefore,a 3D CFD(computational fluid dynamics)model is presented in this paper and used to simulate the liquid spreading behavior in a kerf based on a VOF(volume of fluid)method with a CSF(continuum surface force)model,which is used to simulate multiphase flow,and an empirical correlation for characterizing the liquid dynamic contact angle using UDF(user defined functions).Subsequently,parametric simulations are performed on the kerf area,kerf width,liquid viscosity,liquid surface tension,and liquid velocity at the inlet area of the kerf,and verification experi-ments are conducted to determine the validity of the simulation model.From the simulation and experimental results,three typical liquid spreading regimes that exhibit different effects on wire sawing in the kerfs are found,and their limiting conditions are identified using non-dimensional analysis.Subsequently,a prediction model is pro-posed for the liquid spreading regime based on a set of Weber and Capillary numbers.For wire sawing,an increase in the wafer area does not change the liquid spreading regime in the kerf;however,a reduction in the kerf width sig-nificantly hinders the liquid spreading behavior.Thereby,the spreading regime can be effectively converted to facili-tate wire sawing by adjusting the physical properties and supply conditions of the liquid.

Eco-friendly physical blowing agent mass loss of bio-based polyurethane rigid foam materials

Through systematical experiment design, the physical blowing agent(PBA) mass loss of bio-based polyurethane rigid foam(PURF)in the foaming process was measured and calculated in this study, and different eco-friendly PBA mass losses were measured quantitatively for the first time. The core of the proposed method is to add water to replace the difference, and this method has a high fault tolerance rate for different foaming forms of foams. The method was proved to be stable and reliable through the standard deviations σ1and σ2for R1(ratio of the PBA mass loss to the material total mass except the PBA) and R2(ratio of the PBA mass loss to the PBA mass in the material total mass) in parallel experiments. It can be used to measure and calculate the actual PBA mass loss in the foaming process of both bio-based and petroleumbased PURF. The results show that the PBA mass loss in PURF with different PBA systems is controlled by its initial mass content of PBA in PU materials ω. The main way for PBA to dissipate into the air is evaporation/escape along the upper surface of foam. This study further reveals the mechanism of PBA mass loss: the evaporation/escape of PBA along the upper surface of foam is a typical diffusion behavior. Its spread power comes from the difference between the chemical potential of PBA in the interface layer and that in the outside air. For a certain PURF system, R1has approximately linear relationship with the initial mass content of PBA in PU materials ω, which can be expressed by the functional relationship R1= kω, where k is a variable related to PBA’s own attributes.

As an innovative thermal energy technology,the spray-type packed bed has advantages of high efficiency and low cost.A liquid distributor is the key component for the spray-type packed bed for scattering heat-transfer liquid drops evenly.In this study,the distribution performance and pressure drop of the perforated plate distributors of different orifice diameters were studied experimentally.The experimental results indicate that orifice diameter has a greater effect on the distribution performance compared to flow rate.With an increase in flow rate,the flow pattern through the distributor changes from the uncovered drop to the covered drop and then to the jet flow.The covered drop pattern shows the best performance with a good distribution and a small pressure drop simultaneously,which is the design and optimization principle of the distributor for a spray-type packed bed.

Chronic pain,broadly described as pain lasting longer than 3 months,is a classic example of gene-environment interaction[1].A couple of types of chronic pain have also been shown to have complex heritable properties with a polygenic component[2].Quantitative Sensory Testing(QST)is a formal variant of the sensory examination,including"static"sensory profiling and"dynamic"QST.QST contributes to the prediction of vulnerable subpopulations and effective mechanisms.In addition,a deficit in dynamic QST has been proposed as a predictor of chronic pain[3].

Molecular insights into the circadian clock in marine diatoms

The circadian clock is a fundamental endogenous mechanism of adaptation that coordinates the physiology and behavior of most organisms with diel variations in the external environment to maintain temporal homeostasis.Diatoms are the major primary producers in the ocean.However,little is known about the circadian clock in marine diatoms compared with other organisms.Here,we investigated circadian clock genes,their expression patterns,and responses to environmental stimuli such as light,nitrogen and phosphorus in two marine diatoms,Skeletonema costatum and Phaeodactylum tricornutum,using a combination of q RT-PCR and bioinformatic analysis.We identified 17 and 18 circadian clock genes in P.tricornutum and S.costatum,respectively.Despite significant evolutionary differences,these genes were similar to those of the higher plant Arabidopsis.We also established a molecular model for the marine diatom circadian clock comprising an input pathway,core oscillator,output pathway,and valve effector.Notably,the expression patterns of core clock genes(circadian clock associated 1(CCA1),late elongated hypocotyl(LHY)and timing of cab 1(TOC1))in both species differed from those of terrestrial plants.Furthermore,the expression of these genes was influenced by variations in ambient light,nitrogen and phosphorus availability.Although marine diatoms and higher plants share common circadian clock components,their clock genes have diverged throughout evolution,likely as a result of adapting to contrasting environments.
