Understanding the regulation of cereal grain filling:The way forward

During grain filling,starch and other nutrients accumulate in the endosperm;this directly determines grain yield and grain quality in crops such as rice(Oryza sativa),maize(Zea mays),and wheat(Triticum aestivum).Grain filling is a complex trait affected by both intrinsic and environmental factors,making it difficult to explore the underlying genetics,molecular regulation,and the application of these genes for breeding.With the development of powerful genetic and molecular techniques,much has been learned about the genes and molecular networks related to grain filling over the past decades.In this review,we highlight the key factors affecting grain filling,including both biological and abiotic factors.We then summarize the key genes controlling grain filling and their roles in this event,including regulators of sugar translocation and starch biosynthesis,phytohormone-related regulators,and other factors.Finally,we discuss how the current knowledge of valuable grain filling genes could be integrated with strategies for breeding cereal varieties with improved grain yield and quality.

The optical coupled resonant system consisting of an integrated resonator with gain and a resonator with loss provides an excellent platform to create exceptional points(EPs)in non-Hermitian systems.Most previous studies have focused on the striking intensity feature of EPs,but its phase response is seldom investigated.In this work,we present a thorough study on the phase response of an EP system.Intriguingly,the phase response exhibits distinct behavior depending on the ordering of the ring resonators:when the input light in a bus waveguide is coupled directly or indirectly to the ring with a gain,the phase response is featured by nonmonotonic transition and 2π monotonic transition,respectively.We also prove that the newly identified phase features are theoretically guaranteed.These phase responses produce unique group delays that have never been found in other coupled resonant systems.The results deepen our understanding on EPs in non-Hermitian systems and are potentially useful for practical applications exploiting phase features.

Ventilation is an important engineering measure to control the airborne infection risk of acute respiratory diseases,e.g.,Corona Virus Disease 2019(COVID-19).Occupancy-aided ventilation methods can effectively improve the airborne infection risk control performance with a sacrifice of decreasing working productivity because of the reduced occupancy.This study evaluates the effectiveness of two occupancy-aided ventilation methods,i.e.,the continuously reduced occupancy method and the intermittently reduced occupancy method.The continuously reduced occupancy method is determined by the steady equation of the mass conservation law of the indoor contaminant,and the intermittently reduced occupancy method is determined by a genetic algorithm-based optimization.A two-scenarios-based evaluation framework is developed,i.e.,one with targeted airborne infection risk control performance(indicated by the mean rebreathed fraction)and the other with targeted working productivity(indicated by the accumulated occupancy).The results show that the improvement in the airborne infection risk control performance linearly and quadratically increases with the reduction in the working productivity for the continuously reduced occupancy method and the intermittently reduced occupancy method respectively.At a given targeted airborne infection risk control performance,the intermittently reduced occupancy method outperforms the continuously reduced occupancy method by improving the working productivity by up to 92%.At a given targeted working productivity,the intermittently reduced occupancy method outperforms the continuously reduced occupancy method by improving the airborne infection risk control performance by up to 38%.

An improved EMMS model for turbulent flow in pipe and its solution

Based on the existing energy-minimization multi-scale(EMMS)model for turbulent flow in pipe,an improved version is proposed,in which not only a new radial velocity distribution is introduced but also the quantification of total dissipation over the cross-section of pipe is improved for the dominant mechanism of fully turbulent flow in pipe.Then four dynamic equality constraints and some other constraints are constructed but there are five parameters involved,leading to one free variable left.Through the compromise in competition between dominant mechanisms for laminar and fully turbulent flow in pipe respectively,the above four constructed dynamic equality constraints can be closed.Finally,the cases for turbulent flow in pipe with low,moderate and high Reynolds number are simulated by the improved EMMS model.The numerical results show that the model can obtain reasonable results which agree well with the data computed by the direct numerical simulation and those obtained by experi-ment.This illustrates that the improved EMMS model for turbulent flow in pipe is reasonable and the compromise in competition between dominant mechanisms is indeed a universal governing principle hidden in complex systems.Especially,one more EMMS model for a complex system is offered,pro-moting the further development of mesoscience.

The Receptor Interacting Protein(RIP)kinase family consists of seven Serine/Threonine kinases,which plays a key signaling role in cell survival and cell death.Each RIP family member contains a conserved kinase domain and other domains that determine the specific kinase function through proteineprotein interactions.RIP1 and RIP3 are best known for their critical roles in necroptosis,programmed necrosis and a non-apoptotic inflammatory cell death process.Dysregulation of RIP kinases contributes to a variety of pathogenic conditions such as inflammatory diseases,neurological diseases,and cancer.In cancer cells,alterations of RIP kinases at genetic,epigenetic and expression levels are frequently found,and suggested to promote tumor progression and metastasis,escape of antitumor immune response,and therapeutic resistance.However,RIP kinases can be either pro-tumor or anti-tumor depending on specific tumor types and cellular contexts.Therapeutic agents for targeting RIP kinases have been tested in clinical trials mainly for inflammatory diseases.Deregulated expression of these kinases in different types of cancer suggests that they represent attractive therapeutic targets.The focus of this review is to outline the role of RIP kinases in cancer,highlighting potential opportunities to manipulate these proteins in cancer treatment.

Learning-based methods have been proved to perform well in a variety of areas in the biomedical field,such as biomedical image segmentation,and histopathological image analysis.Deep learning,as the most recently presented approach of learning-based methods,has attracted more and more attention.For instance,massive researches of deep learning methods for image reconstructions of computed tomography(CT)and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)have been reported,indicating the great potential of deep learning for inverse problems.Optical technology-related medical imaging modalities including diffuse optical tomography(DOT),fluorescence molecular tomography(FMT),bioluminescence tomography(BLT),and photo-acoustic tomography(PAT)are also dramatically innovated by introducing learning-based methods,in particular deep learning methods,to obtain better reconstruction results.This review depicts the latest researches on learning based optical tomography of DOT,FMT,BLT,and PAT.According to the most recent studies,learning-based methods applied in the field of optical tomography are categorized as kernel-based methods and deep learning methods.In this review,the former are regarded as a sort of conventional learning-based methods and the latter are subdivided into model-based methods,post-processing methods,and end-to-end methods.Algorithm as well as data acquisition strategy are discussed in this review.The evaluations of these methods are summarized to ilustrate the performance of deep learning-based reconstruction.

Atomic simulations using an embedded atom method(EAM) potential were performed to study changes of packing patterns in titanium clusters containing tens to thousands of atoms. The findings revealed that the changes came from the movements and rearrangements of surface atoms in a large temperature range, and they were strongly dependent on cluster size and elevated temperatures. Small size clusters with icosahedron(Ih)configurations of geometric shell closures were preferred. As the cluster size increased, most of the atoms in these clusters could hold their HCP packing patterns. With the increasing temperature, the coexistence of different packing patterns including HCP, BCC, and Ih occurred. At a high temperature, the disorderly packing quickly extended into the entire region of a large size cluster. The calculations of specific heat were compared with Dulong-Petit law. The simulations provide the possibility to straddle structural transformations and determine critical size suitable for classical theory under certain thermal conditions.

Due to flexible drive-by-wire technology,vehicle stability control can improve handling and lateral stability under extreme conditions.However,this technology can also increase the probability of random transmission delay.This paper proposes a nonlinear model predictive control(NMPC)strategy to improve vehicle stability and compensate for the random time delay.First,by combining the nonlinear dynamic characteristics and driver behavior,we obtain a stable region of the yaw rate and the sideslip angle under complex driving conditions.Second,an NMPC controller is designed to track the reference values in the identified stable region to improve the handling and lateral stability.Finally,the actuator receives the optimized control sequence and compensates for the random time delay of the transmission channel.CarSim/Simulink simulation and hardware-in-the-loop experiment results show that the proposed controller with dynamic boundary conditions can better track the expected value of the yaw rate and suppress the sideslip angle under low adhesion road conditions.
