A reasonable islanding strategy of a power system is the final resort for preventing a cascading failure and/or a large-area blackout from occurrence. In recent years, the applications of wide area measurement systems(WAMS) in emergency control of power systems are increasing. Therefore, a new WAMS-based controlled islanding scheme for interconnected power systems is proposed. First, four similarity indexes associated with the trajectories of generators are defined, and the weights of these four indexes are determined by using the well-developed entropy theory. Then, a coherency identification algorithm based on hierarchical clustering is presented to determine the coherent groups of ***, an optimization model for determining controlled islanding schemes based on the coherent groups of generators is developed to seek the optimal cutset. Finally, a 16-generator68-bus power system and a reduced WECC 29-unit 179-bus power system are employed to demonstrate the proposed WAMS-based controlled islanding schemes, and comparisons with existing slow coherency based controlled islanding strategies are also carried out.

Nowadays,the most notable uncertainty for an electricity utility lies in the electrical demand of *** response(DR)has acquired considerable attention due to uncertain generation outputs from intermittent renewable energy sources and advancements of smart grid *** percentage of the air-conditioner(AC)load over the total load demand in a building is usually very ***,controlling the power demand of ACs is one of significant measures for implementing *** this paper,the increasing development of ACs,and their impacts on power demand are firstly introduced,with an overview of possible DR ***,a comprehensive review and discussion on control techniques and DR programs for ACs to manage electricity utilization in residential and commercial energy sectors are carried ***,comparative analysis among various programs and projects utilized in different countries for optimizing electricity consumption by ACs is ***,the conclusions along with future recommendations and challenges for optimal employment of ACs are presented in the perspective of power systems.

Controlled islanding plays an essential role in preventing the blackout of power *** there are several studies on this topic in the past,no enough attention is paid to the uncertainty brought by renewable energy sources(RESs)that may cause unpredictable unbalanced power and the observabilit>T of power systems after islanding that is essential for back-up black-start ***,a novel controlled islanding model based on mixed-integer second-order cone and chance-constrained programming(MISOCCP)is proposed to address these ***,the uncertainty of RESs is characterized by their possibility distribution models with chance constraints,and the requirements,e.g.,system observability,for rapid back-up black-start measures are also ***,a law of large numbers(LLN)based method is em-ployed for converting the chance constraints into deterministic ones and reformulating the non-convex model into convex ***,case studies on the revised IEEE 39-bus and 118-bus power systems as well as the comparisons among different models are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed *** results show that the proposed model can result in less unbalanced power and better observability after islanding compared with other models.

The development of renewable energy and the increasing peak-valley difference of load demand lead to an increasing requirement of spinning reserve(SR).However,the traditional operation reliability analysis of power system mainly focuses on the up SR and neglects the down ***,the operation reliability of power system considering the impacts of down SR is investigated in this ***,the constraints of down SR are incorporated into the day-ahead unit commitment(UC)model to obtain the generation scheduling and reserve allocation of power *** on the dispatch results of UC model,the re-dispatched energy and load interruption can be determined using optimal power flow(OPF)model in the realtime operation in various contingency *** reliability indices are calculated based on the load curtailment to represent the reliability performances of power *** proposed approaches are validated using the modified IEEE reliability test *** studies demonstrate that down SR can improve the operation reliability of power systems.

In the electricity market environment,electricity price forecasting plays an essential role in the decision-making process of a power generation company,especially in developing the optimal bidding strategy for maximizing ***,it is necessary for a power generation company to develop an accurate electricity price forecasting *** this background,this paper proposes a two-step day-ahead electricity price forecasting algorithm based on the weighted Knearest neighborhood(WKNN)method and the Gaussian process regression(GPR)*** the first step,several predictors,i.e.,operation indicators,are presented and the WKNN method is employed to detect the day-ahead price spike based on these *** the second step,the outputs of the first step are regarded as a new predictor,and it is utilized together with the operation indicators to accurately forecast the electricity price based on the GPR *** proposed algorithm is verified by actual market data in Pennsylvania-New JerseyMaryland Interconnection(PJM),and comparisons between this algorithm and existing ones are also made to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed *** results show that the proposed algorithm can attain accurate price forecasting results even with several price spikes in historical electricity price data.

The optimization of black-start decision-making plays an important role in the rapid restoration of a power system after a major failure/*** the introduction of the concept of smart grids and the development of real-time communication networks,the black-start decision-makers are no longer limited to only one or a few power system experts such as dispatchers,but rather a large group of professional people in *** overall behaviors of a large decision-making group of decision-makers/experts are more complicated and ***,the existing methods for black-start decision-making cannot handle the situations with a large group of *** this background,a clustering algorithm is presented to optimize the black-start decision-making problem with a large group of *** decision-making preferences are obtained by clustering analysis,and the final black-start decision-making results are achieved by combining the weights of black-start indexes and the preferences of the decision-making *** effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by a practical *** work extends the black-start decision-making problem to situations with a large group of decision-makers.

Simultaneous human activities,such as the Super Bowl game,would cause certain impacts on frequency fluctuations in power *** the help of FNET/GridEye measurements,this paper aims to give comprehensive analyses on the frequency fluctuations during Super Bowl LIV held on Feb.2,2020,so as to better understand several phenomena caused by simultaneous activities which will help system operations and ***,recent developments of the FNET/GridEye are briefly ***,the frequency fluctuations of the Eastern Interconnection(El),western electricity coordinating council(WECC),and electric reliability council of Texas(ERCOT)power systems during Super Bowl LIV are ***,frequency fluctuations of Super Bowl Sunday and ordinary Sundays in 2020 are ***,the differences of frequency fluctuations among different years during the Super Bowl and their change trends are also ***,several possible explanations,including the simultaneity of electricity consumption at the beginning of commercial breaks and the halftime show,the increasing usage of the Internet,and the increasing size of TV screens,are illustrated in detail in this paper.

KPI-based Real-time Situational Awareness for Power Systems with a High Proportion of Renewable Energy Sources

With the increasing complexity of power systems and the widespread penetration of renewable energy sources(RES),real-time situational awareness for power systems is of great significance for operational *** the impact of RES on power system operations,a situational awareness key performance index(KPI)system for power systems with a high proportion of RES is proposed in this paper,which consists of reserve capacity abundance,ramp resource abundance,center of inertia(COI)frequency deviation,interface power flow margin,synthesized voltage stability,and angle stability ***,the KPIs are synthesized and visualized by the decision tree method and radar chart method,respectively,for monitoring the operation states(i.e,normal,alert,and emergency states)of power systems with a high proportion of *** simulations are conducted in a revised New England 16-machine 68-bus power system and an actual CEPRI-RE power system in the northwest region of China with a high proportion of *** results show that the proposed KPI-based situational awareness method is able to accurately monitor the real-time state of power systems with a high proportion of RES,and can assist power dispatchers to make effective decisions.

Bi-level Coordinated Planning of Active Distribution Network Considering Demand Response Resources and Severely Restricted Scenarios

Due to the uncertainty and fluctuation of distributed generation(DG)and load,the operation of active distribution network(ADN)is affected by multi-dimension factors which are described by massive operation *** and accurate screening of severely restricted scenarios(SRSs)has become a new challenge in ADN *** this paper,a novel bi-level coordinated planning model which combines the short-time-scale operation problem with the long-time-scale planning problem is *** the upper level,the demand response(DR)resource,an effective non-component planning resource characterized by low capacity price,high energy price,and short contract term,is co-optimized with the configuration of lines and energy storage systems(ESSs)to achieve the economic trade-off between the investment cost and the operation cost under *** the lower level,with the planning scheme obtained from the upper level,massive operation problems are optimized to minimize the daily operation cost;and the SRSs are provided to the upper level through a shadow-price-based scenario screening method,which simulates the planning information(i.e.,the restricted degrees of operation scenarios)feedback process from ADN operators to ADN *** studies on a 62-node distribution system in Jianshan New District,Zhejiang Province,China,illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed bi-level coordinated planning model considering DR resources and SRSs.

Facing constraints imposed by storage and bandwidth limitations,the vast volume of phasor meas-urement unit(PMU)data collected by the wide-area measurement system(WAMS)for power systems cannot be fully *** limitation significantly hinders the effective deployment of situational awareness technologies for systematic *** this work,an effective curvature quantified Douglas-Peucker(CQDP)-based PMU data compression method is proposed for situational awareness of power ***,a curvature integrated distance(CID)for measuring the local flection and fluc-tuation of PMU signals is *** Doug-las-Peucker(DP)algorithm integrated with a quan-tile-based parameter adaptation scheme is then proposed to extract feature points for profiling the trends within the PMU *** allows adaptive adjustment of the al-gorithm parameters,so as to maintain the desired com-pression ratio and reconstruction accuracy as much as possible,irrespective of the power system ***-nally,case studies on the Western Electricity Coordinat-ing Council(WECC)179-bus system and the actual Guangdong power system are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed *** simulation results show that the proposed method achieves stably higher compression ratio and reconstruction accuracy in both steady state and in transients of the power system,and alleviates the compression performance degradation problem faced by existing compression *** Terms—Curvature quantified Douglas-Peucker,data compression,phasor measurement unit,power sys-tem situational awareness.
