Shaking table tests on a cantilever retaining wall with reinforced and unreinforced backfill

Physical modelling of cantilever retaining walls with and without backfill reinforcement was conducted on a 1g shaking table to evaluate the mitigation effect of reinforcement on system dynamics(g denotes the acceleration of gravity).The model wall has a height of 1.5 m with a scale ratio of 1/4 and retains dry sand *** input motions are amplified to three levels of input peak base acceleration,0.11g,0.24g,and 0.39g,corresponding to minor,moderate,and major earthquakes,*** of the seismic response of the retaining walls focuses on acceleration and lateral displacement of the wall and backfill,dynamic earth pressures,and tensile load in the reinforcements(modeled by phosphor-bronze strips welded into a mesh).The inclusion of reinforcement has been observed to improve the integrity of the wall-soil system,mitigate vibration-related damage,and reduce the fundamental frequency of a reinforced *** of acceleration from the base to the upper portion is accompanied by time delay and nonlinear amplification.A reinforced system with a lower acceleration amplification factor than the unreinforced one indicates that reinforcement can reduce the amplification effect of input *** minor and moderate earthquake loadings,reinforcement allows the inertia force and seismic earth pressure to be asynchronous and decreases the seismic earth pressure when inertia forces *** major earthquake loading,the wall is displaced horizontally less than the backfill,with soil pushing the wall substantially;the effect of backfill reinforcement has not been fully *** dynamic earth pressure is large at the top and diminishes toward the bottom.

Early-phase changes of P-wave characteristics after circumferential pulmonary vein isolation

Background Circumferential pulmonary vein isolation （CPVI）, as the basal ablation strategy for treating atrial fibrillation （AF）, not only isolates the connection between the left atrium （LA） and the pulmonary veins （PVs）, but also induces extensive atrial endocardia damage. This could have an effect on the sinus pulse conduction in the LA and subsequently result in changes of P-wave characteristics of surface electrocardiogram （ECG）. Methods Fifty consecutive patients underwent CPVI for symptomatic drug-refractory paroxysmal AF. The 12-lead ECGs were recorded one day before CPVI and seven days after CPVI at sinus rhythm by a standard resting ECG device. Measured characteristics of the P-wave consisted of P-wave duration （PWD）, P-wave amplitude （PWA）, P-wave polarity （PWP）, P-wave notch, P-wave dispersion and P-wave index. Results After CPVI, a prevalent decrease of PWD, PWA, and P-wave dispersion was observed; a transition of P-wave polarity was observed in the leads of III, aVL and aVF. The rate of P-wave notch decreased significantly in all leads, especially in the leads of II, III, aVF and V3. Patients with sinus rhythm had a shorter P-wave dispersion and P-wave index and had a lower rate of P-wave notch compared with the patients with recurrent atrial tachyarrhythmia. Conclusion Observations from using the surface ECG showed that CPVI has instant effects on the electrical conduction in the LA, and several changes of P-wave characteristics associated with development olAF are improved by CPVI.

Salt Stress-induced Programmed Cell Death in Rice Root Tip Cells

Salt stressed rice root tips were used to investigate the changes of reactive oxygen species （ROS） and antioxidant enzymes at the early stages of programmed cell death （PCD）. The results indicated that 500 mmol/L NaCI treatment could lead to specific features of PCD in root tips, such as DNA ladder, nuclear condense and deformation, and transferase mediated dUTP nick end labeling positive reaction, which were initiated at 4 h of treatment and pro- gressed thereafter. Cytochrome c release from mitochondria into cytoplasm was also observed, which occurred at 2 h and was earlier than the above nuclear events. In the very early phase of PCD, an immediate burst in hydrogen peroxide and superoxide anion production rate was accompanied by two-phase changes of superoxide dismutases and ascorbate peroxidase. A short period of increase in the activity was followed by prolonged impairment. Thus, we conclude that salt can induce PCD in rice root tip cells, and propose that in the early phase of rice root tip cell PCD, salt stress-induced oxidative burst increased the antioxidant enzyme activity, which, in turn, scavenged the ROS and abrogated PCD. Also, when the stress is prolonged, the antioxidant system is damaged and accumulated ROS induces the PCD process, which leads to cytochrome c release and nuclear change.

Microwave-induced synthesis and characterization of nanometer Ce_(0.5)Zr_(0.5)O_2 solid solution for the acidic catalytic reaction

Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 solid solution was successfully synthesized using cerium nitrate, zirconium nitrate, and urea as raw materials by the microwave irradiation method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, fluorescence spectrum, transmission electron microscopy, and infrared spectrum. Its acid catalytic activity was evaluated in the esterification reaction of acetic acid and n-butyl alcohol. The results show that Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 solid solution has cubic fluorite structure, and its particle diameter is in the nanometer scale. As a sort of solid acid, it possesses a higher acid catalytic activity and can be easily separated from reaction liquids. It can be used for several times, and basically, its activity keeps constant. The proton acid sites and Lewis acid sites exist in the structure of Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 solid solution.

Processing of a low-costγ-γ'NiPtAl coating with improved oxidation resistance

A novelγ-γ'(Ni solid solution—Ni_(3)Al)NiPtAl coating was produced on advanced single-crystal(SC)superalloy N5 by electroplating of a thin Pt coating with~3μm in thickness followed by heat treatment at 1000℃in *** comparison,a traditionalγ-γ'NiPtAl coating was also produced by electroplating of a thick Pt coating with~6μm in thickness followed by heat treatment at 1100℃in *** novel coating has a mass gain of~0.5 mg·cm^(-2)after 100 h 1-h cyclic oxidation at 1150℃,showing better oxidation resistance than the traditional *** oxide scale mostly consisting ofα-Al_(2)O_(3)grew on the novel coating because the element Cr from the SC alloy substrate contributes to the formation ofα-Al_(2)O_(3).Pt content in the novel coating has significant effect on the oxidation *** optimized Pt content in the coating is about 16 at%,which is helpful to reduce the diffusion of harmful elements from the substrate into the coating but also to reduce the cost of the coating.

AFM probe for measuring~10^(−5)ultra-low friction coefficient:Design and application

Superlubricity provides a novel approach to addressing friction and wear issues in mechanical ***,little is known regarding improving the atomic force microscope(AFM)friction coefficient measurement ***,this study established the theoretical formula for the AFM friction coefficient measurement and deduced the measurement ***,the formula was applied to the AFM probe with a rectangular cross-section *** measurement resolution is associated with the dimensional properties of the AFM probe,the mechanical properties of the cantilever material,the properties of the position-sensitive detector(PSD),and probably the anti-vibration performance of the *** is feasible to make the cantilever as short as possible and the tip as high as possible to improve the measurement *** AFM probe for measuring an ultra-low friction coefficient was designed and *** cantilever’s length,width,and thickness are 50,35,and 0.6μm,*** tip height is 23μ*** measurement resolution can reach 7.1×10^(−6) under the maximum normal ***,the AFM probe was applied to measure the superlubricity between graphene *** friction coefficient is 0.00139 under 853.08 *** work provides a promising method for measuring a~10^(−5) friction coefficient of superlubricity.
