Chiral metamaterials(CMs)composed by artificial chiral resonators have attracted great attentions in the recent decades due to their strong chiroptical resonance and identifiable interaction with chiral materials,facilitating practical applications in chiral biosensing,chiral emission,and display ***,the complex geometry of CMs improves the fabrication difficulty and hinders their scalable fabrication for practical applications,especially in the visible and ultraviolet *** potential strategy is the colloidal lithography that enables parallel fabrication for scalable and various planar ***,we demonstrate a stepwise colloidal lithography technique that uses sequential deposition from multiple CMs and expand their variety and *** geometry and optical chirality of building blocks from single deposition are systematically investigated,and their combination enables a significant extension of the range of chiral patterns by multiple-step *** approach resulted in a myriad of complex designs with different characteristic sizes,compositions,and shapes,which are particularly beneficial for the development of nanophotonic *** addition,we designed a flexible chiral device based on PDMS,which exhibits a good CD value and excellent stability even after multiple inward and outward *** excellent compatibility to various substrates makes the planar CMs more flexible in practical applications in microfluidic biosensing.

Hole arrayed metal-insulator-metal structure for surface enhanced Raman scattering by self-assembling polystyrene spheres

A fabrication process based on the self-assembling polystyrene spheres is proposed to obtain hole arrayed metal-insulator-metal （HA-MIM） structure for surface enhanced Raman scattering （SERS）. The localized field enhancement aroused by the gap resonance in the HA-MIM structure is analyzed by finite-different time domain （FDTD） method. With reference to the theory result, the structure is experimentally fabricated and the Raman scattering spectrum of rhodamine 6G （R6G） is measured by a miniaturized Raman spectrometer. The results shows that the enhancement factor is 3.85 times higher than the control sample with single layered metal hole array. The fabrication process to obtain the HA-MIM SERS substrate is reproducible, fast, large area and low cost.

AIM:To investigate the utility of Beclin-1 and LC3,two autophagy-related proteins,in predicting the cetuximab efficacy in advanced colorectal cancer(ACRC) . METHODS:The data of 85 patients with ACRC treated at the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center from March 1,2005 to December 31,2008 were studied,including 45 cases treated with cetuximab-containing chemotherapy and 40 cases treated with non-cetuximab-containing ***-1 and LC3 expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry,and KRAS status was evaluated by polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS:Beclin-1 and LC3 expression in ACRC wassignificantly correlated(r=0.44,P<0.01);however,LC3 was more highly expressed in cancerous tissues than in normal tissues(Z=-2.63,P<0.01) .In the cetuximab-containing chemotherapy group,patients with low LC3 expression had higher objective response rates(ORRs) than those with high LC3 expression(52.9%vs 17.9%,P=0.01) ,and patients with low Beclin-1 expression had a longer median progressionfree survival(PFS) than their counterparts with higher Beclin-1 expression(9.0 mo vs 3.0 mo,P=0.01) . However,neither of these predictive relationships was detected in the group treated with non-cetuximabcontaining *** with wild-type KRAS had higher ORRs(42.3%vs 9.1%,P=0.049) and disease control rates(DCRs)(73.1%vs 36.4%,P= 0.035) ,and longer median PFS(5.5 mo vs 2.5 mo,P= 0.02) than those with mutant KRAS in the cetuximabcontaining chemotherapy *** Beclin-1(P= 0.52) nor LC3(P=0.32) expression was significantly correlated with KRAS status. CONCLUSION:Patients with low Beclin-1 expression had a longer PFS than those with high Beclin-1 expression,and patients with low LC3 expression had a higher ORR in ACRC patients treated with cetuximab-containing chemotherapy.

Palliative primary tumor resection provides survival beneits for the patients with metastatic colorectal cancer and low circulating levels of dehydrogenase and carcinoembryonic antigen

Background: It remains controversial whether palliative primary tumor resection(PPTR) can provide survival benefits to the patients with metastatic colorectal cancer(m CRC) who have unresectable metastases. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether PPTR could improve the survival of patients with m ***: We conducted a retrospective study on consecutive m CRC patients with unresectable metastases who were diagnosed at Sun Yat?sen University Cancer Center in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, between January 2005 and December 2012. Overall survival(OS) and progression?free survival(PFS) after first?line chemotherapy failure were compared between the PPTR and non?PPTR patient ***: A total of 387 patients were identified, including 254 who underwent PPTR and 133 who did not. The median OS of the PPTR and non?PPTR groups was 20.8 and 14.8 months(P < 0.001), respectively. The median PFS after first?line chemotherapy was 7.3 and 4.8 months(P < 0.001) in the PPTR and non?PPTR groups, respectively. A larger proportion of patients in the PPTR group(219 of 254, 86.2%) showed local progression compared with that of patients in the non?PPTR group(95 of 133, 71.4%; P < 0.001). Only patients with normal lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) levels and with carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA) levels <70 ng/m L benefited from PPTR(median OS, 22.2 months for the PPTR group and 16.2 months for the non?PPTR group; P < 0.001).Conclusions: For m CRC patients with unresectable metastases, PPTR can improve OS and PFS after first?line chemo?therapy and decrease the incidence of new organ involvement. However, PPTR should be recommended only for patients with normal LDH levels and with CEA levels <70 ng/m L.

Analytic Formulae for Estimating Motor Proportion of Load Model Under Small Disturbance

In the composite load model(CLM),which is commonly used in China,an equivalent motor and equivalent static load are used to represent all electrical equipment and networks connected to a load *** research has determined typical values of electrical and mechanical parameters for load models of different load types,which improves the basis for load ***,the motor proportion parameter is not the same for different load buses or at different times;therefore,obtaining the actual motor proportion is key to establishing an accurate load *** the existing load modeling method,motor proportion is commonly identified along with other parameters under rare large disturbances;therefore,the value of the motor proportion is fixed by the time when a large disturbance *** this paper,formulae are derived to estimate motor proportion under small disturbances,and these formulae allow direct calculation of motor proportion without using any optimization *** proposed estimation formulae do not rely on any parameters of load model or power system but instead rely only on measurement of the voltage and active power at steady-state points before and after a small *** of universality of small disturbances in power systems,estimating time-varying motor proportion under small disturbances will be helpful for solving the time-varying problem of load ***,the proposed motor proportion estimation formulae are validated by simulations,physical experiments,and field experiments.

Predictive and prognostic implications of 4E-BP1, Beclin-1, and LC3for cetuximab treatment combined with chemotherapy in advanced colorectal cancer with wild-type KRAS: Analysis from real-world data

BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer(CRC) is one of the main causes of cancer-related deaths in China and around the world. Advanced CRC(ACRC) patients suffer from a low cure rate though treated with targeted therapies. The response rate is about 50% to chemotherapy and cetuximab, a monoclonal antibody targeting epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR) and used for ACRC with wild-type KRAS. It is important to identify more predictors of cetuximab efficacy to further improve precise treatment. Autophagy, showing a key role in the cancer progression, is influenced by the EGFR pathway. Whether autophagy can predict cetuximab efficacy in ACRC is an interesting *** To investigate the effect of autophagy on the efficacy of cetuximab in colon cancer cells and ACRC patients with wild-type *** ACRC patients treated with cetuximab plus chemotherapy, with detailed data and tumor tissue, at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center from January 1, 2005,to October 1, 2015, were studied. Expression of autophagy-related proteins[Beclin1, microtubule-associated protein 1 A/B-light chain 3(LC3), and 4 Ebinding protein 1(4 E-BP1)] was examined by Western blot in CRC cells and by immunohistochemistry in cancerous and normal tissues. The effect of autophagy on cetuximab-treated cancer cells was confirmed by MTT assay. Velocity measurement based on orthogonal CCD shadow photograph system in Ballistic range

A method of measuring the velocity of fast moving object by charge coupled device （CCD） shadow photograph system is developed. This system consists of high resolution orthogonal CCD cameras, time detecting device and the pulsed laser which can generate two short laser pulses with adjustable interval more than 100 μs. Experiments are conducted to measure the velocity of the flying steel ball. The results show that the proposed velocity measurement is effective in modem ballistic measurement.

Chain Extender-induced Hydrogen Bonding Organization Determines the Morphology and Properties of Thermoplastic Polycarbonate Polyurethane

Thermoplastic polycarbonate polyurethanes(PCUs) are multiblock copolymers that have been applied for medical devices for long time. Aliphatic diols are common chain extenders(CE) involved in the composition of the hard segments of PCU. However, limited knowledge was discovered about how the chemical structure of CE affects the hydrogen bonding organization within PCUs and their mechanical *** investigate this problem, a group of PCUs were synthesized respectively by extending the polymer chain with 1,4-butanediol(BDO),aminoethanol(MEA), ethanediol(EO) as three kinds of chain extenders. Tiny differences in the CE chemical structure results in remarkable variations in phase separation, condensed morphologies, thermal and mechanical properties, which are characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, atomic force microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, differential scanning calorimetry, and tensile tests. The microstructural evolution during unilateral deformation and the different mechanism induced by the different CEs was probed and unveil by in situ wide-and small-angle X-ray diffraction. Symmetry of CE can improve the organization of the hydrogen bonding. The coherence strength of the urethane/urea group also plays a key role by comparing the two PCUs with ethanediol and aminoethanol.

High-Order Two-Scale Asymptotic Paradigm for the Elastodynamic Homogenization of Periodic Composites

The classical two-scale asymptotic paradigm provides macroscopic and microscopic analyses for the elastodynamic homogenization of periodic composites based on the spatial or/and temporal variable,which offers an approximate framework for the asymptotic homogenization analysis of the motion ***,in this framework,the growing complexity of the homogenization formulation gradually becomes an obstacle as the asymptotic order *** such a context,a compact,fast,and accurate asymptotic paradigm is *** work reviews the high-order spatial two-scale asymptotic paradigm with the effective displacement field representation and optimizes the implementation by symmetrizing the tensor to be ***,the modified implementation gets rid of the excessive memory consumption required for computing the high-order tensor,which is demonstrated by representative one-and two-dimensional *** numerical results show that(1)the contrast of the material parameters between media in composites directly affects the convergence rate of the asymptotic results for the homogenization of periodic composites,(2)the convergence error of the asymptotic results mainly comes from the truncation error of the modified asymptotic homogenized motion equation,and(3)the excessive norm of the normalized wavenumber vector in the two-dimensional inclusion case may lead to a non-convergence of the asymptotic results.
