Amplification effect of intra-seasonal variability of soil moisture on heat extremes over Eurasia

Drying soil has been conducive to a high frequency of extreme high-temperature events over many regions worldwide in recent decades.However,changes in the intraseasonal variability of soil moisture can also influence the likelihood of extremely high temperatures.Although previous investigators have examined the association between extremely high temperatures and large-scale atmospheric circulation variability,the role of land-atmosphere coupling dominated by soil moisture variability in extremely high temperatures,particularly over the Eurasian continent,is not well understood.In this study,on the basis of the Land Surface,Snow,and Soil Moisture Model Intercomparison Project,we found that land-atmosphere feedback amplified the variability of soil moisture in most regions of Eurasia during summer from 1980 to 2014.This amplification of soil moisture variability is closely correlated with more intensive intraseasonal variability of surface air temperature and more frequent occurrences of extreme high-temperature events,particularly in Europe,Siberia,Northeast Asia,and the Indochina Peninsula.This correlation implies that increasing the intraseasonal variability of soil moisture results in a high likelihood of heat extremes during summer in most parts of Eurasia except Asian desert areas.On the intraseasonal timescale,the land-atmosphere coupling increases the variability of surface sensible heat flux and net long-wave radiation heating the atmosphere by intensifying the soil moisture variability,thus amplifying the variability of surface air temperature and enhancing the extreme high-temperature days.This finding demonstrates the importance of changes in intraseasonal soil moisture variability for the increasing likelihood of heat extremes in summer.

Effect of Fe Substitution on Magnetic Properties and Radar Wave Absorption of the Y_(2)Co_(17) Rare Earth Soft Magnetic Alloy

The rapid development of information technology leads a demand for high frequency soft magnetic materials with ex-ceptional radar wave absorption properties.A new magnetic material with superior radar wave absorption is explored in this paper.we explored the preparation of Y_(2)Co_(17)-xFex(x=0.0,1.0,2.0,3.0)alloy powders using yttrium oxide as a raw material by a low-cost and short preparation cycle reduction-diffusion process.The crystal structure,intrinsic magnetic properties,high frequency magnetism and radar wave absorption of Y_(2)Co_(17)-xFex(x=0.0,1.0,2.0,3.0)were investigated.These compounds have a perfect magnetic repair of Y_(2)Co_(17) and enable the improvement of the overall magnetic properties of Y_(2)Co_(17)-xFex(x=0.0,1.0,2.0,3.0)compounds.The Y_(2)Co_(17)-xFex/Polyurethane(PU)(x=0.0,1.0,2.0,3.0)absorbers were divided in detail using the zero-reflection mechanism.The results show that all Y_(2)Co_(17)-xFex/PU(x=0.0,1.0,2.0,3.0)absorbers have excellent absorption performance(reflection loss RL is less than-85 dB);in addition,Y_(2)Co_(15)Fe_(2)/PU absorbers and Y_(2)Co_(14)Fe_(3)/PU absorbers are superior candidates for S-band materials.In particular,the perfectly matched frequency fp of the modulated Y_(2)Co_(14)Fe_(3)/PU absorber is shifted to the L-band(1–2 GHz)where early warning radars are located.The Y_(2)Co_(14)Fe_(3)/PU absorber has an effective absorption bandwidth of 300 MHz(1.5–1.8 GHz)at a thickness of 5.230 mm.It can also absorb the full L-band at-4 dB,which has rarely been reported.

Supertetragonal BaZrS: A promising perovskite sulphide with giant ferroelectricity and low band gap

Over the past century, ferroelectricity has offered exciting opportunities for fundamental research and device applications.However, most of the discovered excellent ferroelectrics are oxide materials with large band gaps, limiting their potential for optoelectronics applications. Here using first-principles calculations we identify a new narrow-gap ferroelectric beyond oxides,i.e., ferroelectric perovskite sulphide BaZrS3. Under large compressive strains, BaZrS3can be stabilized into a unique supertetragonal phase with an extraordinary polarization of 67.16 μC/cm2, which is even stronger than that of conventional oxide ferroelectrics. Excitingly, the supertetragonal BaZrS3exhibits a direct narrow band gap of 1.2 eV and excellent electronic properties. Based on the chemical bonding analysis, we attribute the formation of supertetragonal phase to charge re-ordering in which the π bond overlap along the long ?Zr-S? bond completely vanishes and the antibonding states of the σ bond appear below the Fermi level. Our work provides a conceptual strategy for designing new ferroelectrics for electronic and photovoltaic applications.

ROS-responsive hydrogels with spatiotemporally sequential delivery of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory drugs for the repair of MRSA-infected wounds

For the treatment of MRSA-infected wounds,the spatiotemporally sequential delivery of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory drugs is a promising strategy.In this study,ROS-responsive HA-PBA/PVA(HPA)hydrogel was prepared by phenylborate ester bond cross-linking between hyaluronic acid-grafted 3-amino phenylboronic acid(HA-PBA)and polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)to achieve spatiotemporally controlled release of two kinds of drug to treat MRSA-infected wound.The hydrophilic antibiotic moxifloxacin(M)was directly loaded in the hydrogel.And hydrophobic curcumin(Cur)with anti-inflammatory function was first mixed with Pluronic F127(PF)to form Cur-encapsulated PF micelles(Cur-PF),and then loaded into the HPA hydrogel.Due to the different hydrophilic and hydrophobic nature of moxifloxacin and Cur and their different existing forms in the HPA hydrogel,the final HPA/M&Cur-PF hydrogel can achieve different spatiotemporally sequential delivery of the two drugs.In addition,the swelling,degradation,self-healing,antibacterial,anti-inflammatory,antioxidant property,and biocompatibility of hydrogels were tested.Finally,in the MRSA-infected mouse skin wound,the hydrogel-treated group showed faster wound closure,less inflammation and more collagen deposition.Immunofluorescence experiments further confirmed that the hydrogel promoted better repair by reducing inflammation(TNF-a)and promoting vascular(VEGF)regeneration.In conclusion,this HPA/M&CurPF hydrogel that can spatiotemporally sequential deliver antibacterial and anti-inflammatory drugs showed great potential for the repair of MRSA-infected skin wounds.

Legumes have evolved specific inventions to enhance nitrogen(N)acquisition by establishing symbiotic interactions with N-fixing rhizobial bacteria.Because symbiotic N fixation is energetically costly,legumes have developed sophisticated mechanisms to ensure carbon-nitrogen balance,in a variable environment,both locally and at the whole plant level,by monitoring nodule number,nodule development,and nodular nitrogenase activity,as well as controlling nodule senescence.Studies of the autoregulation of nodulation and regulation of nodulation by nodule inception(NIN)and NIN-LIKE PROTEINs(NLPs)have provided great insights into the genetic mechanisms underlying the nitrateinduced regulation of root nodulation for adapting to N availability in the rhizosphere.However,many aspects of N-induced pleiotropic regulation remain to be fully explained,such as N-triggered senescence in mature nodules.Wang et al.determined that this process is governed by a transcriptional network regulated by NAC-type transcription factors.Characterization and dissection of these soybean nitrogenassociated NAPs(SNAPs)transcription factor-mastered networks have yielded a roadmap for exploring how legumes rewire nodule functions across a range of N levels,laying the foundation for enhancing the growth of N-deprived crops in agricultural settings.

Microwave-induced thermoacoustic elastic imaging:A simulation study

Microwave-induced thermoacoustic imaging(MTI)has the advantages of high resolution,high contrast,non-ionization,and non-invasive.Recently,MTI was used in the¯eld of breast cancer screening.In this paper,based on the¯nite element method(FEM)and COMSOL Multiphysics software,a three-dimensional breast cancer model suitable for exploring the MTI process is proposed to investigate the in°uence of Young's modulus(YM)of breast cancer tissue on MTI.It is found that the process of electromagnetic heating and initial pressure generation of the entire breast tissue is earlier in time than the thermal expansion process.Besides,compared with normal breast tissue,tumor tissue has a greater temperature rise,displacement,and pressure rise.In particular,YM of the tumor is related to the speed of thermal expansion.In particular,the larger the YM of the tumor is,the higher the heating and contraction frequency is,and the greater the maximum pressure is.Di®erent Young's moduli correspond to di®erent thermoacoustic signal spectra.In MTI,this study can be used to judge di®erent degrees of breast cancer based on elastic imaging.In addition,this study is helpful in exploring the possibility of microwave-induced thermoacoustic elastic imaging(MTAE).

Network analysis reveals context-dependent structural complexity of social calls in serrate-legged small treefrogs

Vocal communication plays an important role in survival,reproduction,and animal social association.Birds and mammals produce com-plex vocal sequence to convey context-dependent information.Vocalizations are conspicuous features of the behavior of most anuran species(frogs and toads),and males usually alter their calling strategies according to ecological context to improve the attractiveness/competitiveness.However,very few studies have focused on the variation of vocal sequence in anurans.In the present study,we used both conventional method and network analysis to investigate the context-dependent vocal repertoire,vocal sequence,and call network structure in serrate-legged small treefrogs Kurixalus odontotarsus.We found that male K.odontotarsus modified their vocal sequence by switching to different call types and increasing repertoire size in the presence of a competitive rival.Specifically,compared with before and after the playback of advertisement calls,males emited fewer advertisement calls,but more aggressive calls,encounter calls,and compound calls during the playback period.Network analysis revealed that the mean degree,mean closeness,and mean betweenness of the call networks significantly decreased during the playback period,which resulted in lower connectivity.in addition,the increased proportion of one-way motifs and average path length also indicated that the connectivity of the call network decreased in competitive context.However,the vocal sequence of K.odontotarsus did not display a clear small-world network structure,regardless of context.Our study presents a paradigm to apply network analysis to vocal sequence in anurans and has important implications for understanding the evolution and function of sequence patterns.

Influence of pore structure on thermal stress distribution inside coal particles during primary fragmentation

Thermal stress is an important reason of coal particle primary fragmentation,during which the role of pore structure is ambiguous.Thermal stress induced fragmentation experiments were conducted with low volatile coal/char particles,and the results show that the fragmentation severity enhances with increasing porosity.Various porous thermal stress models were developed with finite element method,and the influences of the pore shape,size,position and porosity on the thermal stress were discussed.The maximum thermal stress inside particle increases with pore curvature,the pore position affects the thermal stress more significantly at the particle center and surface.The expectation of the maximum tensile thermal stress linearly increases with porosity,making the particles with higher porosity easier to fragment,contrary to the conclusion deduced from the devolatilization theory.The obtained results are valuable for the analysis of different thermal processes concerning the thermal stresses of the solid feedstocks.
