Primary Systemic Amyloidosis Presenting as Skin Vegetations:A Case Report

Introduction:Primary systemic amyloidosis is characterized by clonal plasma cell disorder,and its signs and symptoms are various and complex,damage to the skin and mucous membrane is often more likely to attract attention.Here we reported a case of a 61-year-old male patient who presented with topical mucocutaneous lesion,as well unusual skin vegetations.Case presentation:A 61-year-old man was hospitalized due to repeated burning sensation on his back,multiple ecchymosis,and skin vegetations.Through a series of examinations(mainly including skin histopathology,bone marrow cytology,bone marrow flow cytometry,immunofixation electrophoresis),Primary systemic amyloidosis was diagnosed,but multiple myeloma could not be diagnosed.Subsequently,he received chemotherapy.In the half-year follow-up,there was no significant change in his symptoms and signs.Discussion:In this case,in addition to the typical skin damage of primary amyloidosis,the multiple skin vegetations in the buttocks,abdomen,and arms are particularly noteworthy.According to the histopathology and Immunohistochemistry of the skin vegetation,we infer that the formation mechanism of these skin vegetation is lymphatic obstruction caused by amyloid,which leads to lymphatic dilatation,lymph leakage,and dermal edema.Conclusion:Primary systemic amyloidosis is a rare disease,which is often difficult to diagnose.We should be alert to those atypical skin features so as not to delay diagnosis.

Numerical simulation of Marangoni effect induced by species transfer across iron droplet–molten slag interface

A mathematical model accounting for unsteady mass transfer across interface of a stationary iron droplet immersed into molten slag was established through the volume of fluid coupled with level set method.The Marangoni effect induced by mass transfer was reproduced successfully,and the hydrodynamic instability phenomena at the interface,such as the Marangoni convection flow,the evolution of the interfacial tension during the mass transfer,and the influence of Marangoni effect on the mass transfer rate,were revealed.The results show that the Marangoni convection flow develops quickly and behaves as an ordered structure in the forms of four pairs of the convection cell at the edge of the droplet once the oxygen transfer across the interface starts.The average convection flow velocity along the interface is high,even more than 0.025 m/s,depending on the droplet diameter,which facilitates the mass transfer.The Marangoni convection flow of the large droplet develops more easily than that of the small droplet,and the larger the droplet diameter is,the higher the convection flow velocity and the mass transfer rate are.Moreover,it is shown that the droplet diameter influences the impacting region of the Marangoni convection flow and its duration period.

Phase transition is a core content of black hole thermodynamics. This study adopted Kramer’s escape rate method for describing the Brownian motion of particles in an external field to investigate the intensity of the phase transition between small and large black hole states. Some existing studies mostly focused on the formal analysis of the thermodynamic phase transition of black holes, but they neglected the detailed description of the phase transition process. Our results show that the phase transition between small and large black holes for charged anti-de Sitter(AdS) black holes presents serious asymmetric features, and the overall process is dominated by the transition from a small black hole to a large black hole. This study filled a research gap of a stochastic process analysis on the issue of the first-order phase transition rate in the Ad S black hole.

The Arctic is one of the most significant changing areas on the Earth under the climate change scenario.More regions in the Arctic are becoming ice-free oceans in the melting season or through the whole year.Therefore,ocean wind and wave,as the two most important parameters in the air-sea interface,are drawing signifi-cant attention to the Arctic Ocean.Scatterometer and radar alti-meter are the two traditional remote sensing instruments for ocean wind and wave observations,while the former is limited by coarse spatial resolution and the latter has small spatial coverage.Wind and wave data in high spatial resolution and wide coverage by synthetic aperture radar(SAR)are currently lacking in the Arctic Ocean.We developed an ocean wind and wave dataset by Sentinel-1 SAR in the pan-Arctic Ocean(above 60°N),covering January 2017 to May 2021.By comparing with sea surface wind speed data of scatterometer,the SAR-retrieved wind data achieve an accuracy of 1.23 m/s,in terms of root mean square error(RMSE).Compared with significant wave height data of radar altimeter,the SAR retrievals have an RMSE of 0.66 m.The data records are in the standard NetCDF-4 format.The dataset is publicly available at:http://***/10.11922/sciencedb.00834.

Parkinson’s disease(PD)is the second most common and fastest-growing neurodegenerative disorder.In recent years,it has been recognized that neurotransmitters other than dopamine and neuronal systems outside the basal ganglia are also related to PD pathogenesis.However,little is known about whether and how the caudal zona incerta(ZIc)regulates parkinsonian motor symptoms.Here,we showed that specific glutamatergic but not GABAergic ZIc^(VgluT2) neurons regulated these symptoms.ZIc^(VgluT2) neuronal activation induced time-locked parkinsonian motor symptoms.In mouse models of PD,the ZIc^(VgluT2) neurons were hyperactive and inhibition of their activity ameliorated the motor deficits.ZIc^(VgluT2) neurons monosynaptically projected to the substantia nigra pars reticulata.Incerta-nigral circuit activation induced parkinsonian motor symptoms.Together,our findings provide a direct link between the ZIc,its glutamatergic neurons,and parkinsonian motor symptoms for the first time,help to better understand the mechanisms of PD,and supply a new important potential therapeutic target for PD.

Understanding the fundamental processes of human brain development and diseases is of great importance for our health.However,existing research models such as non-human primate and mouse models remain limited due to their developmental discrepancies compared with humans.Over the past years,an emerging model,the“brain organoid”integrated from human pluripotent stem cells,has been developed to mimic developmental processes of the human brain and disease-associated phenotypes to some extent,making it possible to better understand the complex structures and functions of the human brain.In this review,we summarize recent advances in brain organoid technologies and their applications in brain development and diseases,including neurodevelopmental,neurodegenerative,psychiatric diseases,and brain tumors.Finally,we also discuss current limitations and the potential of brain organoids.

The current electromagnetic environment brings a growing demand for efficient microwave absorption(MA)materials.Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x) MXene,one of the 2D transition-metal carbides,is considered to be a promising MA material owing to its superior dielectric properties and structural processability.In order to further improve the MA performance and environmental adaptability of Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x) MXene,Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x) MXene-based MA materials enhanced by composition and structure design have been extensively studied and the regu-lation ideas for its MA properties can be outlined as component optimization and structure manipulation strategies based on the microwave absorption mechanism.Herein,we briefly introduced the microwave absorption mechanism and focused on the design strategies of Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x) MXene-based MA materials based on recent advances.In addition,the prospects of Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x) MXene-based MA materials were also discussed.

Baicalin Antagonizes Prostate Cancer Stemness via Inhibiting Notch1/NF-κB Signaling Pathway

Objective To investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the effect of baicalin on prostate cancer(PCa)progression both in vivo and in vitro.Methods The in situ PCa stem cells(PCSCs)-injected xenograft tumor models were established in BALB/c nude mice.Tumor volume and weight were respectively checked after baicalin(100 mg/kg)treatment.Hematoxylin-eosin(HE)staining was used to observe the growth arrest and cell necrosis.mRNA expression levels of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 1(ALDH1),CD44,CD133 and Notch1 were determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction.Protein expression levels of ALDH1,CD44,CD133,Notch1,nuclear factorκB(NF-κB)P65 and NF-κB p-P65 were detected by Western blot.Expression and subcellular location of ALDH1,CD44,CD133,Notch1 and NF-κB p65 were detected by immunofluorescence analysis.In vitro,cell cycle distribution and cell apoptosis of PC3 PCSCs was assessed by flow cytometry after baicalin(125µmol/L)treatment.The migration and invasion abilities of PCSCs were assessed using Transwell assays.Transmission electron microscopy scanning was utilized to observe the structure and autophagosome formation of baicalin-treated PCSCs.In addition,PCSCs were infected with lentiviruses expressing human Notch1.Results Compared with the control group,the tumor volume and weight were notably reduced in mice treated with 100 mg/kg baicalin(Plin treatment significantly inhibited cell proliferation and promoted cell apoptosis.Furthermore,baicalin treatment reduced mRNA and protein expression levels of CD44,CD133,ALDH1,and Notch1 as well as the protein expression of NF-κB p-P65 in the xenograft tumor(Pliferation of PCSCs was significantly attenuated after treatment with 125µmol/L baicalin for 72 h(Plin for 48 and 72 h(Plin notably induced cell apoptosis and seriously damaged the structure of PCSCs.The mRNA and pro

In shallow-water areas,the marine magnetotelluric(MT)method faces a challenge in the investigation of seabed conductivity structures due to electrical and magnetic noises induced by ocean waves,which seriously contaminate MT data.Ocean waves can affect electric and magnetic fields to different extents.In general,their influence on magnetic fields is considerably greater than that on electric fields.In this paper,a complex adaptive filter is adopted to reduce wave-induced magnetic noises in the frequency domain.The processing results of synthetic and measured MT data indicate that the proposed method can effectively reduce wave-induced magnetic noises and provide reliable apparent resistivity and phase data.
