The biogeochemical behavior of dissolved aluminum in the southern Yellow Sea:Influence of the spring phytoplankton bloom

Many recent studies have investigated the nutrient-type profiles of dissolved aluminum(Al) in the *** scavenging of dissolved Al can occur during phytoplankton blooms,but the mechanism remains *** distribution of dissolved Al in the southern Yellow Sea(SYS) was investigated in winter and spring *** measurements at grid stations during the spring sampling cruise,two drifting anchor surveys of more than 100 h were conducted to trace the variation of dissolved Al concentration during the spring phytoplankton bloom(SPB).The concentration of dissolved Al in the SYS decreased from 40 nmol/L in February to 30 nmol/L in March and 10-20 nmol/L in April,while the concentration of Chl a increased from 4 μg/L in *** concentration of dissolved Al in the SYS decreased significantly with the development of the phytoplankton bloom,which indicated biological scavenging of dissolved Al from water *** proportion of dissolved Al scavenged from water column by different phytoplankton species differed at the two drifting stations,with greater removal efficiency demonstrated by diatoms than *** samples collected from the Chl a maximum layer were washed with trace metal clean reagent(oxalate-EDTA-citrate,abbreviate as oxalate solution,Tovar-Sanchez et al.,2003) to enable the surface-scavenged(extracellular) and intracellular Al pools associated with phytoplankton to be ***-nine to ninetysix percent of the total Al was found to be existed in the interior pools,which indicated that biological absorption was the important way to scavenge dissolved Al during phytoplankton blooms in the SYS.

Mangrove forest degradation indicated by mangrove-derived organic matter in the Qinzhou Bay,Guangxi,china,and its response to the Asian monsoon during the Holocene climatic optimum

The response of mangrove ecosystems to the Asian monsoon in the future global warming can be understood by reconstructing the development of mangrove forests during the Holocene climatic optimum（HCO）, using proxies preserved in coastal sediments. The total organic matter in sediments of a segmented core, with calibrated age ranges between 5.6 and 7.7 cal. ka BP and corresponding to the HCO, from the Qinzhou Bay in Guangxi, china, is quantitatively partitioned into three end-members according to their sources： mangrove-derived, terrigenous,and marine phytoplanktonic, using a three-end-member model depicted by organic carbon isotope（δ13Corg） and the molar ratio of total organic carbon to total nitrogen（C/N）. The percentage of mangrove-derived organic matter（MOM） contribution is used as a proxy for mangrove development. Three visible drops in MOM contribution occurred at ca. 7.3, ca. 6.9, and ca. 6.2 cal. ka BP, respectively, are recognized against a relatively stable and higher MOM contribution level, indicating that three distinct mangrove forest degradations occurred in the Qinzhou Bay during the HCO. The three mangrove forest degradations approximately correspond to the time of the strengthened/weakened Asian winter/summer monsoon. This indicates that even during a period favorable for the mangrove development, such as the HCO, climatic extremes, such as cold and dry events driven by the strengthened/weakened Asian winter/summer monsoon, can trigger the degradation of mangrove forests.

Sediment grain size in the deltaic environment of the Luanhe River(LR),liaoning,china,contains sediment transport pathway information useful in elucidating the shoreline change and fluvialmarine *** this study,we utilized numerical partitioning of the sedimentary components and geostatistical grain size trend analysis(GSTA)to define the sediment transport pattern in the Luanhe River delta(LRD)and interpolated the sediment transport pattern using content changes of end numbers(EM).EM1(the mean grain size 7.12Ф,fine silt),EM2(2.37Ф,fine sand),and EM3(1.27Ф,medium sand)components were identified by the numerical partitioning by *** interpolation method was used to interpolate the parameters of the grain size for the regular grid,and the interpolation radius was 0.015 decimal *** chose 0.09 decimal degree as the characteristic distance for GSTA in the semivariogram model using the geostatistical *** FB(-)case(finer,better sorted and more negatively skewed)was adopted in GSTA for its satisfaction in the Global Moran’s I *** result of the GSTA shows that the sediments in the south barriers(SBs)were transported to the southwest of the study *** sediments in the north,in the SE direction of sediment transport trend from the river mouth,indicated that the sediments in the north of the study area were transported from the LR to the northern beaches,and to the south and east of the study *** sediment transport trend that simplified by GSTA as the FB(-)case was approved by the content changes of sedimentary components(***1,EM2,and EM3).In addition,the turbulent jet diffusion pattern indicated that the coarse sediments(EM3)were delivered by LR during the flood season,and the EM2 and EM1 were from wave and tide,respectively.

A new Doppler frequency anomaly algorithm for surface current measurement with SAR

Values for Doppler center frequency are calculated from the echo signal at the satellite using the Doppler centroid method and so include the predicted Doppler frequency caused by the relative motion of the satellite and the Earth,which is the main component of Doppler center frequency and must be removed to obtain the Doppler frequency anomaly for ocean current *** this paper,a new Doppler frequency anomaly algorithm was proposed when measuring surface currents with synthetic aperture radar(SAR).The key of the proposed algorithm involved mean filtering method in the range direction and linear fitting in the azimuth direction to remove the radial and the azimuthal component of predicted Doppler frequency from the Doppler center frequency,*** basis is that the theoretical Doppler center frequency model of SAR exhibits an approximately linear characteristic in both the range direction and in the azimuth *** the help of the new algorithm for predicted Doppler frequency removal,the estimation error of Doppler frequency anomaly can be reduced by avoiding employing the theoretical antenna pattern and imperfect satellite attitude parameters in the conventional Doppler frequency *** measurement results demonstrated that,compared to the conventional Doppler frequency with/without error correction method,the proposed algorithm allows for a pronounced improvement in the current measuring accuracy in comparison with the global ocean multi-observation(MOB)*** addition,the eff ectiveness and robustness of the proposed Doppler algorithm has been demonstrated by its application in the high velocity current in the Kuroshio region.

Sedimentary Records of Mangrove Evolution During the Past one Hundred Years Based on Stable Carbon Isotope and Pollen Evidences in Maowei, SW china

Mangroves accumulate sedimentary sequences, where cores can provide historical records of mangrove evolution with past climate change and human activity. The study traced the history of mangrove evolution during the past one hundred years in a mangrove swamp of Maowei Sea, SW china. The sedimentation rates(0.38-0.95 cm yr^(-1)) were calculated on the basis of ln(^(210)Pb_(xs)/Al) and mass depth in the core sediments. Chemical tracers, such as δ^(13)C_(org) and C:N values, were utilized to trace the contribution of mangrove-derived organic matter using a ternary mixing model. Because of potential diagenetic alteration and / or overlap in the isotopic signatures of different components, simultaneous use of mangrove pollen diagrams can help to supplement some of these limitations. Combined with mangrove pollen, mangrove evolution was reconstructed and could be divided into three stages: flourishment(1886-1905 AD), slight degradation(1905-1949 AD) and rapid degradation period(1949-2007 AD), which was consistent with previous reports. The reclamation of mangrove swamps to shrimp ponds was the major reason for rapid degradation of mangrove ecosystems in recent years, rather than climate change in the region.

Carbon dioxide emissions from the Three Gorges Reservoir,china

Carbon dioxide(CO_2) emission from the rivertype reservoir is an hotspot of carbon cycle within inland waters. However, related studies on the different types of reservoirs are still inadequate. Therefore, we sampled the Three Gorges Reservoir(TGR), a typical river-type reservoir having both river and lake characteristics, using an online system(HydroCTM/CO_2) and YSI-6600v2 meter to determine the partial pressure of carbon dioxide(pCO_2)and physical chemical parameters in 2013. The results showed that the CO_2 flux from the mainstream ranged from 26.1 to 92.2 mg CO_2/m^2h with average CO_2 fluxes of 50.0 mg/m^2h. The CO_2 fluxes from the tributary ranged from-10.91 to 53.95 mg CO_22/mh with area-weighted average CO_2 fluxes of 11.4 mg/m^2h. The main stream emits CO_2 to the atmosphere the whole year; however, the surface water of the tributary can sometimes act as a sink of CO_2 for the atmosphere. As the operation of the TGR, the tributary became more favorable to photosynthetic uptake of CO_2 especially in summer. The total CO_2 flux was estimated to be 0.34 and 0.03 Tg CO_2/year from the mainstream and the tributaries, respectively. Our emission rates are lower than previous estimates, but they are in agreement with the average CO_2 flux from temperate reservoirs estimated by Barros et al.(Nat Geosci 4(9):593–596, 2011).

Snow algal blooms in Antarctic King George Island in 2017-2022 and their future trend based on CMIP6 projection

Snow algal blooms have a remarkable climatic or environmental effect through influencing the snow-albedo feedback,accelerating the melting of surface snow,and amplifying global *** algal blooms occurred frequently on King George Island,Antarctic,during the recent six austral summers(December to next February)through *** on an assessment of satellite images,this study found that the range and amount of snow algal blooms in the summers of 2018,2020,2021 and 2022 are relatively larger than in the summers of 2017 and *** meteorological conditions have shaped the year-to-year variation of algal bloom intensities is analyzed through observational *** results suggest that during the strong bloom summers there exist prevailing northerly or northwesterly wind anomalies which advect warm and humid airmass from the southern ocean into the island,increasing surface air temperature and humidity;the warmer and more humid surface favors melting of snow and an increase of low cloud cover,subsequently enhancing the atmospheric downward long-wave radiation and amplifying surface warmth;the increased low cloud cover reflects more ultraviolet rays back to space and weakens the short-wave radiation reaching the *** these factors together favor to a stronger *** comparison,during 2017 and 2019 there exist weak southerly wind anomalies which induce the northward advection of cold and dry air from the Antarctic Continent and favor the cooler ***,it is unfavorable for the snow algal *** on these results,a snow algal bloom potential index(API)integrating the meteorological conditions is constructed,and its future trend is projected based on the EC-Earth3 run attending the CMIP6 under SSP245 and SSP585.A significant increasing trend is projected especially under *** snow algal bloom on King George Island will become more frequent and stronger in *** implies a potential accelerate melting of ice shelf

In the context of global warming and rapid environment change in the Arctic,the supply of organic matter(OM)has increased significantly and a large amount of OM are buried on the Arctic *** the fate of OM in Arctic shelf sediments is crucial to understanding the global carbon *** a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean,the Chukchi Sea is one of the most critical areas where OM is *** on the surface sediment samples collected during the sixth Chinese National Arctic research Expedition in the summer of 2014 and the SinoRussian joint Arctic research Expedition in the summer of 2016,this study takes amino acids(AAs)as the primary tool to explore the source and degradation of OM in the surface sediments of the Chukchi *** study shows that total hydrolyzable amino acid(THAA)concentrations(dry weight)are high,with a mean value of(32.7±15.8)μmol/*** spatial distribution is related to primary productivity,hydrodynamic conditions,sediment properties and other *** source of OM in the surface sediments of the Chukchi Sea is dominated by diatom-dominated marine productivity,with some input from terrestrial ***,as the main source of the D-enantiomer of AA(D-AA),not only have transforming effect on OM,but their cell walls and remnants likewise supply the OM *** on a series of diagenetic indicators,we conclude that the OM in the surface sediments of the Chukchi Sea has undergone extensive degradation[DI(degradation index)=-0.59±0.44],and the degradation degree in the slope is higher than that in the *** study uses AA to explore the sources and degradation of OM in the sediments of the Chukchi Sea,which facilitates our understanding of OM transport and transformation on the Arctic shelf.

^(210)Po,^(210)Pb,and^(234)Th were determined in water columns of the east china Sea(ECS)to investigate their biogeochemical behaviors during a severe red tide ***^(210)^(210)radionuclides were influenced by particle content effect and particle composition based on distribution coefficient(Kd)*** suspended matter(TSM)content and Kd *** of particulate organic carbon and total suspended matter contents(POC/TSM content ratios).The peaks of mass specific activities of^(210)Po,^(210)Pb,and^(234)Th indicated that degraded particles could have an intensified enrichment ability for radionuclides compared with the surficial suspended *** factor of^(210)Po and^(210)Pb(FPo/Pb)(>1)and fractionation factor of^(210)Po and^(234)Th(FPo/Th)(>1)were much higher at algal blooming regions than that at non-blooming stations,indicating that algal blooms promoted the fractionation of^(210)Po against^(210)Pb and^(234)Th,and proving that^(210)Po exhibited a stronger affinity for biogenic particles than^(210)Pb and^(234)Th when POC content increased in the ***/^(210)Po,POC/^(210)Pb and POC/^(234)Th ratios(content/activity ratios)sharply decreased with depth in both algal bloom and non-bloom *** outbreak of algal bloom promoted the complexity of suspended particles and increased the variability of POC/tracer ratios(content/activity ratios)in the different depth of the shallow *** considerations should be taken to the difficulty of the selection of export interface and the suitable tracers when algal blooming occurs.

Predicting sediment flux from continental shelf islands,southeastern china

Continental shelf islands are contributors of terrestrial sediment supply to shelf regions,and the sediment flux from these islands shall be *** calculated the sediment flux of continental shelf islands in the southeastern china using two empirical equations under two *** first,the sediment load/yield of the islands has the same pattern as the adjacent small,mountainous rivers along the coastline;and the second,each of the islands was treated as a single *** results show that the sediment supply from these islands reached an order of magnitude of 1 Mt/a,which is comparable to the supply from the local smaller rivers.A sensitivity analysis indicates that this value represents the lower limit of estimate;if the accurate amount of sub-catchments of any island is considered,then this value will be enhanced *** study demonstrates that the sediment supply from continental shelf islands to oceans is an important factor affecting the regional sedimentation and,therefore,should be paid with attention.
