Long-term potentiation （LTP） at synapses between primary afferents and spinal dorsal horn neurons induced by noxious electrical stimulation or injury of peripheral nerve is con- sidered to underlie chronic pain [1]. The mechanisms of the spinal LTP have been intensively investigated, since it was discovered in 1995 [2]. In recent years, spinal application of ATP [3], brain-derived neurotrophic factor （BDNF） [4] and opioid [5] has been shown to induce spinal LTP at C-fiber synapses in the absence of conditioning activation of primary afferents. This is contrary to the general belief that coinci- dent pre- and postsynaptic activity is needed for LTP induction. Recently, Sandkiihler and his co-workers reported in Science that combined activation of microglia and astro- cytes by P2X7 receptor agonist BzATP induces LTP at synapses between afferent C-fibers and spinal lamina I neurons in the absence of presynaptic activation, which is termed gliogenic LTP [6] （Fig. 1C）. To determine the rela- tionship between the gliogenic LTP and high frequency stimulation （HFS）-indueed LTP, they used transverse lum- bar spinal cord slices with long dorsal roots which were separated into halves. Twenty two lamina I neurons that received independent monosynaptic C-fiber inputs from each dorsal root half were recorded. Homosynaptic LTP is recorded in 12 neurons, among them 6 neurons also show heterosynaptic LTP （Fig. 1A）. Interestingly, heterosynaptic LTP is also induced in 5 neurons in which HFS fails to induce homosynaptic LTP （Fig. 1B）.

A self-assembled, （H20）38 cluster stabilized by a mono-nuclear copper（H） complex 1 namely { [Cu（phen）2（CO3）].7H2O} is characterized by X-ray diffraction studies. The adjacent （H2O）38 clusters connect together resulting in an infinite 2D water layer structure. An improved synthetic method of saquinavir, an HIV protease inhibitor, is described. In comparison with the methods in the reported works, the improved procedures had several advantages, such as less expensive agents, shorter reaction time, and a smaller amount of the solvent needed. To measure the optical purities of the products, the intermediates were determined by means of chiral HPLC. Some of the intermediates can also be used for the preparation of new protease inhibitors.

Objective To investigate the clinical neurological manifestations of Takayasu arteritis (TA). Methods A retrospective study was conducted with 63 consecutive TA cases admitted to Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2009 to May 2010. All the patients fulfilled the diagnostic criteria of TA by the American College of Rheumatology. Among the 63 TA patients, 27 with neurological manifestations were included in the present study. All the patients were evaluated using standardized neurological examination, sonography, computed tomography (CT) angiography, and cerebral CT or magnetic resonance imaging. Results Dizziness and visual disturbance were the most common symptoms, which occurred in 20 (74.1%) and 16 (59.3%) patients respectively. Another common symptom was headache, observed in 15 (55.6%) patients. Six (22.2%) patients had suffered from ischemic stroke; 7 (25.9%) patients had epileptic seizures. Two (7.4%) patients were diagnosed as reversible posterior encephalopathy syndrome (RPES) based on typical clinical and imaging manifestations. Conclusions Neurological manifestations are common symptoms in TA patients in the chronic phase, including dizziness, visual disturbance, headache, ischemic stroke, seizures, and some unusual ones such as RPES. We suggested RPES be included into the differential diagnosis of acute neurological changes in TA.

Deep sequencing of small RNAs（sR NA） is widely used in sR NAs studies in plants. In order to investigate the sequencing frequency variation of sR NAs, the same sR NA samples from rice grains were sequenced twice using deep sequencing technique. The sR NAs were classified into three categories, high abundance（〉 100 RPM）, medium abundance（10–100 RPM） and low abundance（1–10 RPM）. According to the repeat sequencing data of the same sample, highly expressed sR NAs（〉 100 RPM） were less subject to random drift, and 95% of the sR NAs Log2 ratio between two samples fell between-0.649 and 0.558. The same trend was observed in mediumly expressed sR NAs（10–100 RPM）, and 95% of the Log2 ratio fell between-0.535 and 0.759. As to lowly expressed sR NAs（1–10 RPM）, 95% of the Log2 ratio varied between-1.009 and 1.011. These results can be used as a theoretical guide to find differentially expressed s RNAs in sR NA studies in plants.

AIM： To reveal the expression of multidrug-resistance associated proteins： glutathione-S-transferase π（GSTπ）, P-glycoprotein（P-gp） and vault protein lung resistance protein（LRP） in retinoblastoma（RB） without any conservative treatment before primary enucleation and to correlate this expression with histopathological tumor features. METHODS： A total of 42 specimens of RB undergone primary enucleation were selected for the research. Sections from the formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens were stained with HE and immunohistochemistry to detect the expression of GSTπ, P-gp and ***： GSTπ was expressed in 39/42（92.86%） RBs and in 9/9（100%） well-differentiated RBs. P-gp/GSTπ was found in 30（71.42%） of 42 RBs. Totally 9（21.43%） tumors were well differentiated and 33（78.57%） were poorly differentiated. Totally 15（35.71%） eyes had optic nerve（ON） tumor invasion, 36（85.71%） had choroidal tumor invasion, and 14（33.33%） had simultaneous choroidal and ON invasion. There was no statistically significant relationship between P-gp, GSTπ, LRP positivity and the degree of ocular layer tumor invasion and ON tumor invasion（P〉0.05）. CONCLUSION： RB intrinsically expresses GSTπ, P-gp and LRP. GSTπ expression is positive in 100% welldifferentiation ones, so in which way it is correlated with differentiation. But the other two proteins expressions are not related to tumor differentiation and to the degree of tumor invasion. GSTπ may be a new target of chemotherapy in RB.
