Multiphasic scaffolds for the repair of osteochondral defects:Outcomes of preclinical studies

Osteochondral defects are caused by.injury.to both the articular cartilage and subchondral bone within skeletal joints. They.can lead to irreversible joint damage and increase the risk of progression to osteoarthritis. Current treatments for osteochondral injuries are not curative and only.target sy.ptoms, highlighting the need for a tissue engineering solution. Scaffold-based approaches can be used to assist osteochondral tissue regeneration, where biomaterials tailored to the properties of cartilage and bone are used to restore the defect and minimise the risk of further joint degeneration. This review captures original research studies published since 2015, on multiphasic scaffolds used to treat osteochondral defects in animal models. These studies used an extensive range of biomaterials for scaffold fabrication, consisting mainly.of natural and sy.thetic poly.ers. Different methods were used to create multiphasic scaffold designs, including by.integrating or fabricating multiple lay.rs, creating gradients, or through the addition of factors such as minerals, growth factors, and cells. The studies used a variety.of animals to model osteochondral defects, where rabbits were the most commonly.chosen and the vast majority.of studies reported small rather than large animal models. The few available clinical studies reporting cell-free scaffolds have shown promising early.stage results in osteochondral repair, but long-term follow-up is necessary.to demonstrate consistency.in defect restoration. Overall, preclinical studies of multiphasic scaffolds show favourable results in simultaneously.regenerating cartilage and bone in animal models of osteochondral defects, suggesting that biomaterials-based tissue engineering strategies may.be a promising solution.

Rate-transient analy.is(RTA)has been widely.applied to extract estimates of reservoir/hy.raulic fracture ***,the majority.of RTA techniques can lead to misdiagnosis of reservoir/fracture information when the reservoir exhibits reservoir heterogeneity.and multiphase flow *** work proposes a practical-y.t-rigorous method to decouple the effects of reservoir heterogeneity.and multiphase flow during TLF,and improve the evaluation of reservoir/fracture properties.A new,general,semi-analy.ical model is proposed that explicitly.accounts for multiphase flow,fractalbased reservoir heterogeneity.anomalous diffusion,and pressure-dependent fluid *** is achieved by.introducing a new Boltzmann-ty.e transformation,the exponent of which includes reservoir heterogeneity.and anomalous *** order to decouple the effects of reservoir heterogeneity.and multiphase flow during TLF,the modified Boltzmann variable allows the conversion of three partial differential equations(PDE's)(i.e.,oil,gas and water diffusion equations)into ordinary.differential equations(ODE's)that are easily.solved using the Runge-Kutta(RK)method.A modified time-power-law plot is also proposed to estimate the reservoir and fracture properties,recognizing that the classical square-root-of-time-plot is no longer valid when various reservoir complexities are exhibited *** the slope of the straight line on the modified time-power-law plot,the linear flow parameter can be estimated with more ***,because of the new Boltzmann-ty.e transformation,reservoir and fracture properties can be derived more efficiently.without the need for defining complex pseudo-variable *** the new semi-analy.ical model,the effects of multiphase flow,reservoir heterogeneity.and anomalous diffusion on rate-decline behavior are *** the case of approximately.constant flowing pressure,multiphase flow impacts initial oil rate,which is a funct

Cooperation in an asy.metric volunteer's dilemma game with relatedness

What motivates some members of a social group to voluntarily.incur costs in order to provide for the common good? This question lies at the heart of theoretical and empirical studies of cooperative behavior. This is also the question that underlies the classic volunteer's dilemma model, which has been previously.explored in scenarios where group members are related or interact asy.- metrically. Here we present a model that combines asy.metry.and relatedness, showing that the probability.of volunteerism in such sy.tems depends closely.on both the degree of asy.metry.and level of relatedness between interacting individuals. As has been shown in previous volunteer's dilemma models, the pay.ff ratio and overall group size also influence the probability.of volunteerism. The probability.of volunteerism decreases with increasing group size or decreasing cost-to-benefit ratio of the coplay.rs; in the presence of asy.metrical interactions, subordinate play.rs were more likely.to offer public goods than the dominant play.r. More asy.metrical interactions decrease the probability.of volunteerism of the dominant play.r; overall volunteerism increases with increasing relatedness.

The occurrence of obesity.has increased across the whole world. Many.epidemiological studies have indicated that obesity.strongly.contributes to the development of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, ty.e 2 diabetes, liver diseases and other disorders, accounting for a heavy.burden on the public and on health-care sy.tems every.y.ar. Excess energy.uptake induces adipocy.e hy.ertrophy. hy.erplasia and formation of visceral fat in other non-adipose tissues to evoke cardiovascular disease, liver diseases. Adipose tissue can also secrete adipokines and inflammatory.cy.okines to affect the local microenvironment,induce insulin resistance, hy.ergly.emia, and activate associated inflammatory.signaling pathway.. This further exacerbates the development and progression of obesity.associated diseases. Although some progress in the treatment of obesity.has been achieved in preclinical and clinical studies, the progression and pathogenesis of obesity.induced diseases are complex and unclear. We still need to understand their links to better guide the treatment of obesity.and associated diseases. In this review, we review the links between obesity.and other diseases, with a view to improve the future management and treatment of obesity.and its co-morbidities.

High–Speed electron beam curing of thick electrode for high energy.density.li-ion batteries

Electron beam curing is demonstrated as a promising method for high speed,low cost and environmentally.friendly.battery.electrode *** work reports transfer of this process to pilot scale equipment and evaluation of electrochemical performance in prototy.e 1.5 Ah pouch *** liNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2(NMC532)composite electrodes with an areal loading of 25 mg cm^-2(~4 mAh cm^-2)are successfully.cured at a line speed of 500 feet per minute at 275 *** to the NMC532 cathode processed via a conventional coating method,the electron beam cured electrodes show higher capacity.fade in the first 100 cy.les,but similar fade rate *** improvement strategies are proposed and *** work demonstrates that electron beam curing is a promising method for manufacturing thick battery.electrodes at high speeds and low capital/operation cost.

In response to thermal runaway.TR)of electric vehicles,recent attention has been focused on mitigation strategies such as efficient heat dredging in battery.thermal *** management with particular focus on battery.cooling has been becoming increasingly.*** usually.happened when an electric vehicle is unpowered and *** this state,traditional active battery.cooling schemes are disabled,which can easily.lead to dangerous incidents due to loss of cooling ability.and advanced passive cooling strategies are therefore gaining ***,we developed an enhanced thermal radiation material,consisting of~1μm thick multilay.red nano-sheet graphene film coated upon the heat dissipation surface,thereby.enhancing thermal radiation in the *** surface was characterized on the nanoscale,and tested in a battery.cooling *** found that the graphene-based coating's spectral emissivity.is between 91% and 95% in the mid-infrared region,and thermal experiments consequently.illustrated that graphene-based radiative cooling y.elded up to15.1% temperature reduction when compared to the uncoated *** the novel graphene surface to augment a heat pipe,the temperature reduction can be further enlarged to 25.6%.The new material may.contribute to transportation safety.global warming mitigation and carbon neutralization.

Simulations and analy.es of experimental data from leaks from high-pressure hy.rogen storage sy.tems will require knowledge of the stagnation state time histories and stream properties exiting the *** analy.ical ideal-gas model based on the ideal gas state equation and a computer program making use of the NIST standard reference database(REFPROP)were developed to model the entire process of leaks from high-pressurized hy.rogen gas *** results obtained by.the two methods agree with each other *** the gas behavior departs from the ideal gas properties at high pressures,the actual stagnation pressure and temperature decay.more rapidly.than with the ideal-gas assumption.
