Giardia duodenalis exhibits seven assemblages (A-G) that are distributed in different hosts. The A and B assemblages are commonly found in humans and several mammals, while C and D assemblages are typically found in dogs. The purpose of this study was to determine the assemblage of Giardia duodenalis present in the stool samples of ten canines using an assay based on PCR amplification, restriction analysis, and sequencing of the small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU-rDNA), β-giardin, and triosephosphate isomerase (tpi) genes in order to establish the similarities or differences between the assemblage obtained with each gene. The results indicated that all positive isolates belonged to assemblage A, and specifically to the sub-assemblage A-I. A comparison of the SSU-rDNA gene sequence revealed the presence of three subgroups of assemblage A. These findings highlight the importance of canine transmission of Giardia in Mexico and its genetic plasticity. They also establish a method for additional and more molecularly extensive epidemiological studies to improve sanitation and hygiene in the most affected areas.

The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of emerging parasites in two groups of immunosuppressed patients, including individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (AIDS) (HIV) or having acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with or without diarrhea. Stool samples were collected from 96 HIV and 77 ALL patients from March 2010 through December 2011. Screening for opportunistic parasites was carried out by the coproparasitoscopic Faust method, Ziehl Neelsen staining, and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Results showed that 22.9% of HIV fecal samples were positive for emerging parasites, including Cryptosporidium spp. (7.3%), Microsporidium spp. (5.2%), Isospora belli (1.0%), Giardia intestinalis (2.6%), and Cyclospora spp. (7.3%). On the other hand, 32.5% of ALL fecal samples were positive for emerging parasites, including Cryptosporidium spp. (9.1%), Microsporidium spp. (19.5%), Isospora belli (1.3%), and Giardia intestinalis (2.6%). Our results highlighted the need for specific, efficient, and reliable diagnostic methods to identify the presence of emerging parasites in immunocompromised patients susceptible to different infectious diseases or neoplastic processes and avoid the consequences for the host as an increased disease rate, alterations in the clinical manifestation of the infection or even exacerbation of its course.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the intestinal parasite prevalence in puppies from six different kennels;four kennels were in Guadalajara and Zapopan cities (Jalisco State) and two kennels were in Mexico City. From October 2006 to November 2007, we collected 441 fecal samples from 147 puppies, both male and female, ranging from 1 to 36 months of age. Three samples from every puppy were analyzed by using the Faust technique. The prevalence found were as follows: Giardia intestinalis (genotype A and B) 6.8%;Cystoisospora 21.08%;Uncinaria 7.48%;Toxocara canis 12.29% and multiparasitism (Giardia, Toxocara and Uncinaria) 4.76%. The highest prevalence for both Giardia and Cystoisospora were found in 2-3- month-old puppies;the highest prevalence for Toxocara canis was found in 3-4-month-old puppies. In the kennels of Mexico City we found mainly Giardia intestinalis, Cystoisospora to be most prevalent in Zapopan and Toxocara canis in Guadalajara. The high prevalence of intestinal parasites found in this study demonstrates an increased risk for infection in humans, as these animals are usually a common pet in many homes. This zoonotic phenomenon represents an important health problem for any community.

Orchidaceae is a large family of 1,260 species in Mexico, of which 433 grow in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Although economically important in horticulture because of the beauty of their flowers, researches have done little work regarding their medicinal properties. This paper aimed to present the results of ethnobotanical, pharmacological and active compounds research on Veracruz medicinal orchids. The ethnobotanical information was obtained by consulting the Atlas of the Mexican Traditional Medicine Plants, Veracruz Medicinal Flora Database （CITRO-UV project） and through field work in the Nahuatl community of Cuautlajapa, Veracruz. To obtain pharmacological and active compounds information of registered species, a search was carded out through MEDLINE （USA National Library of Medicine Journal Citation database）. Twelve medicinal orchids were recorded for Veracruz, i.e., Epidendrum chlorocorymbos Schltr., Habenaria floribunda Lindl., Isochillus latibracteatus A. Rich. ＆ Galeotti, lsochillus major Schltdl. ＆ Cham., Mormodes maculata var. unicolor （Hook.） L. O. Williams, Oestlundia luteorosea （A. Rich. ＆ Galeotti） W. E. Higgins, Oncidium ascendens Lindl., Scaphyglottis fasciculata Hook., Sobralia macrantha Lindl., Spiranthes eriophora （Rob. ＆ Greenm.）, Stanhopea oculata （G. Lodd.） Lindl. and Vanilla planifolia Andrews. Only two species have been investigated in terms of their pharmacology and active compounds. Also, information for another five species closely related to already identified ones was obtained. Given the relative poverty of current information on the topic, this paper demonstrates the need to further study the ethnobotanical, pharmacological and chemical aspects of the region＇s medicinal orchids.

Physicochemical and sensory characteristics of restructured meat of common carp （Cyprinus carpio） fortified with 0-8 g/100 g of chia seed flour （CSF） was evaluated. It had a higher nutritional value （higher fibre content and protein retention] （p 〈 0.05） and better cooking characteristics （higher cooking yield and moisture retention）（p 〈 0.05） than the control. The colour （a＊, b＊） increased; lightness and whiteness index decrease （p 〈 0.05）. Hardness increase （p 〈 0.05） occurred because of CSF addition. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that fibre fortification did not interfere with the thermal transitions of the restructured meat. No significant differences were detected with the preference test scores of 4% or 8% CSF compared with the control. Restructured （4%-8% CSF） had a higher content of fibre and fat, which could be linoleic and linolenic acid, and an increase in the content of protein compared with those of commercial products, among had 1.62 and 2.25 mg AGE/g. Therefore, the restructured properties of common carp were governed by CSF addition.

背景单克隆抗体的广泛的应用导致了超敏反应(HSRs)发生率的增加,这阻碍了单克隆抗体作为一线治疗方法在临床上的应用。HRSs的症状、诊断方法及定向治疗方法均尚未标准化。目的我们基于临床表型、潜在的内型和生物标志物进行脱敏的治疗方法提出一种新的基于循证医学的m Ab HSR分类方法。方法描述了104例患者对16种m Abs HSR的表型、内型和生物标志物,并与526次皮下及静脉脱敏治疗结果进行比较。结果初始反应呈现4种模式:Ⅰ型样反应占63%,细胞因子释放反应占13%,混合反应占21%,Ⅳ型迟发反应占3%。与之形成鲜明对比的是,在脱敏治疗期间突发的HSRs为23%,其中52%为细胞因子释放反应,32%为Ⅰ型反应,12%为混合型反应,4%为Ⅰ型伴Ⅳ型迟发超敏反应。58例患者对10种m Abs进行皮肤试验,41%的患者出现阳性。在脱敏治疗期间,1例患者血清类胰蛋白酶水平升高,8例患者IL-6水平升高,均为细胞因子释放表型。结论 m Abs引起的HSRs可界定为Ⅰ型、细胞因子释放型、混合(Ⅰ型/细胞因子释放型)型和Ⅳ型反应,可通过生物标志物如皮肤试验、类胰蛋白酶和IL-6进行鉴别分型。当确诊为m Abs HSR时,这些表型有助于患者接受个性化和精准医学治疗,并为脱敏治疗的实施提供依据。脱敏治疗是一种安全有效的治疗手段,可使出现过变态反应的m Abs仍能作为一线治疗方法。

Understanding the factors shaping species＇ distributions is a key longstanding topic in ecology with unresolved issues. The aims were to test whether the relative contribution of abiotic factors that set the geographical range of freshwater fish species may vary spatially and/or may depend on the geographical extent that is being considered. The relative contribution of factors, to discriminate between the conditions prevailing in the area where the species is present and those existing in the considered extent, was estimated with the instability index included in the R pack- age SPEDInstabR. We used 3 different extent sizes： 1） each river basin where the species is present （local）; 2） all river basins where the species is present （regional）; and 3） the whole Earth （global）. We used a data set of 16,543 freshwater fish species with a total of 845,764 geographical records, together with bioclimatic and topographic variables. Factors associated with tempera- ture and altitude show the highest relative contribution to explain the distribution of freshwater fishes at the smaller considered extent. Altitude and a mix of factors associated with temperature and precipitation were more important when using the regional extent. Factors associated with precipitation show the highest contribution when using the global extent. There was also spatial variability in the importance of factors, both between species and within species and from region to region. Factors associated with precipitation show a clear latitudinal trend of decreasing in importance toward the equator.
