Using MutPred derived mtDNA load scores to evaluate mtDNA variation in hypertension and diabetes in a two-population cohort：The SABPA study

Mitochondrial DNA（mt DNA） variation has been implicated in many common complex diseases, but inconsistent and contradicting results are common. Here we introduce a novel mutational load hypothesis, which also considers the collective effect of mainly rare variants, utilising the Mut Pred *** apply this new methodology to investigate the possible role of mt DNA in two cardiovascular disease（CVD） phenotypes（hypertension and hyperglycaemia）, within a two-population cohort（n = 363; mean age 45 ± 9 yrs）. Very few studies have looked at African mt DNA variation in the context of complex disease, and none using complete sequence data in a well-phenotyped cohort. As such, our study will also extend our knowledge of African mt DNA variation, with complete sequences of Southern Africans being especially under-represented. The cohort showed prevalence rates for hypertension（58.6%） and prediabetes（44.8%）. We could not identify a statistically significant role for mt DNA variation in association with hypertension or hyperglycaemia in our cohort. However, we are of the opinion that the method described will find wide application in the field, being especially useful for cohorts from multiple locations or with a variety of mt DNA lineages, where the traditional haplogroup association method has been particularly likely to generate spurious results in the context of association with common complex disease.

Spontaneous fungal peritonitis: Epidemiology, current evidence and future prospective

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is a complication of ascitic patients with end-stage liver disease(ESLD); spontaneous fungal peritonitis(SFP) is a complication of ESLD less known and described. ESLD is associated to immunodepression and the resulting increased susceptibility to infections. Recent perspectives of the management of the critically ill patient with ESLD do not specify the rate of isolation of fungi in critically ill patients,not even the antifungals used for the prophylaxis,neither optimal treatment. We reviewed,in order to focus the epidemiology,characteristics,and,considering the high mortality rate of SFP,the use of optimal empirical antifungal therapy the current literature.

CNTs tuning and vertical alignment in anodic aluminium oxide membrane

Anodic aluminium oxide （AAOM） membranes were used for template growth of carbon nanotubes （CNT） inside their pores by chemical vapour deposition （CVD） of different hydrocarbons, in the absence of transition metal catalyst. A composite material, containing one nanotube for each channel, having the same length as the membrane thickness and the external diameter close to the diameter of the membrane holes, was obtained. Yield, selectivity, and quality of CNTs in terms of diameter （up to very thin CNT）, carbon order, length, arrangement （i.e. number of tubes for each channel）, purity, that are critical requisites for several applications were optimised by investigating the effect of changing the hydrocarbon feedstock gas, also in the presence of hydrogen. The samples produced using methane as a feedstock have a well ordered structure. The role of the alumina channels surface during the CNT growth has been investigated and its catalytic activity has been proved for the first time.

The Death of the Reader： Meaning in the Era of Digital Narcissism

Roland Barthes' s famous essay on the "Death of the Author" inaugurated an intense reflection on the progressive dwindling of the importance of the traditional biographic idea of "author" in the activity of receiving and interpreting a text, especially a literary one. In the new epistemic era favored by the emergence and affirmation of structuralism, the meaning of a text was, indeed, no longer seen as stemming from an individual agency but from the social dimensions of language and culture. As digital communication is progressively supplanting many forms of non-digital meaning transmission, though, present-day semiospheres are confronted with a different scenario: on the one hand, "empirical" authors are actually becoming more and more prominent, meaning that audiences are starving for non-digital and "auratic" experiences of encounter with meaning, minding more meeting with authors, for instance, than reading their novels; on the other hand, given the easiness of meaning production with digital technology, the same cultures are going through a progressive "agony of the reader": individuals are so intent in creating new particles of meaning, with impatient and daily frenzy, that they never become patient readers of other people's meaning creations, especially if these challenge the instantaneousness that characterizes the contemporary digital communication. The shortness of present-day meaning creation and its lack of audience is bound to change the entire semiosphere. The essay aims at foreseeing some of these changes, pinpointing one of the main features of Narcissism in the digital era.

The paper consists in an in-depth semiotic analysis of the spatiality of present-day online teaching as compared with that of the traditional *** spatiality,the paper contends,cannot be properly digitalized,because it is strictly dependent on *** embodied spatiality of a classroom,it is argued,is nevertheless fundamental to bring about the ritual transfiguration that underpins the didactic experience and its socio-cultural ***,the urgent need to rethink digital teaching environments in relation to these crucial lacks,which only semiotics,with its specific attention to non-verbal elements of communication—including spatiality—is fully equipped to detect.

Non-invasive brain stimulations mainly consist of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation exhib- its satisfactory outcomes in improving multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord injury and cerebral palsy-induced spasticity. By contrast, transcranial direct current stimulation has only been studied in post-stroke spasticity. To better validate the efficacy of non-invasive brain stimulations in im- proving the spasticity post-stroke, more prospective cohort studies involving large sample sizes are needed.

Alcohol and hepatocellular carcinoma:A review and a point of view

It is well recognized that one cause of chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is alcohol *** in Italy and the United States concludes that the most common cause of HCC(responsible for 32%to 45%of HCC)is *** has recently been shown that a significant relationship between alcohol intake,metabolic changes,and hepatitis virus infection does *** may be a factor in the development of HCC via direct(genotoxic)and indirect mechanisms(cirrhosis).There is only one way of diagnosing HCC,which is early identification through surveillance,when curative treatments become *** stopping alcohol intake the risk of liver cancer decreases by 6%to 7%a year,and an estimated time period of 23 years is also ***,surveillance is also important in former drinkers and,in our opinion,independently from the presence of compensated *** cases of very early stage(VES)and early stage with portal hypertension,liver transplantation is the optimal option;and in cases of associated disease,percutaneous ethanol injections,radiofrequency and microwave ablation are the ideal *** the possibility of detecting microvascular invasion with HR,several studies and some randomized controlled trials revealed that overall survival and DSF rates in patients with VES HCC are much the same after ablation and ***,ablation can be regarded as a firstline choice for patients with VES *** is important to emphasize that the choice of treatment should be weighed carefully in the context of a multidisciplinary cancer team.
