Objectives: We combine Hobfoll’s Conserva.ion of Resources (COR) theory a.d key components of self-help group “step work” ideology to investiga.e how dyna.ic cha.ges in key intra.individua. resource loss a.d ga.ns (self-esteem, a.stinence self-effica.y, existentia. growth) influence rela.se ra.es in a.sa.ple of individua.s in the Ma.ntena.ce Sta.e of substa.ce a.use recovery. Methods: Pa.ticipa.ts (n = 579) completed two surveys over a.nine month period tha. a.sessed ba.eline a.d cha.ges in intra.individua. loss a.d ga.n resources a. well a. rela.se ra.es over study course. Multiple regression a.a.yses were performed to predict whether ba.eline a.d dyna.ic cha.ges in intra.individua. scores predict rela.se ra.es over time. Results: Individua.s tha. reported lower levels of resource ga.n a. ba.eline, a. well a. decrea.ed ga.n tra.ectories a.d increa.ed loss tra.ectories over time were more likely to rela.se. Conclusions: Findings support self-help group “step work” models a.d the a.plica.ion of COR theory for rela.se likelihood prediction in a.sa.ple of individua.s in longer term substa.ce a.use recovery. Resea.ch efforts should exa.ine the complex rela.ionship between these dyna.ic intra.individua. resources, socia. cognition, self-regula.ion a.d rela.se risk. Future interventions should a.dress the importa.ce of the continua. development a.d protection of these va.ua.le intra.individua. resources to prevent rela.se.

Few studies ha.e exa.ined the effects of psy-chia.ric disorders occurring over a.long dura.tion a.ong pa.ients with chronic fa.igue syn-drome (CFS). The role of premorbid a.d current psychia.ric disorders in impa.rment wa. ex-plored with a.sa.ple of 113 pa.ticipa.ts with CFS. Subgroups were crea.ed ba.ed on pa.t a.d current psychia.ric sta.us including those whose psychia.ric history wa. premorbid a.d current, postmorbid a.d current, pa.t but not current, a.d those with no lifetime dia.nosis. Results from a.one-wa. Ma.OVa.revea.ed tha. pa.ients with a.premorbid a.d current psychia.-ric disorder reported significa.tly higher pa.n severity, more soma.ic symptoms, poorer sleep qua.ity, a.d poorer qua.ity of life tha. those with no psychia.ric history. Levels of fa.igue a.d physica. functioning a.ong pa.ients with CFS were unrela.ed to the four subgroups in this study. a.though those with a.premorbid a.d current psychia.ric disorder were differentia.ed from those with no psychia.ric history on some ma.kers of impa.rment, the sa.ple a. a.whole ha. severe fa.igue-rela.ed impa.rment, which is the ca.dina. symptom of CFS. Implica.ions for resea.ch a.e discussed.

Ba.kground a.d Objective: Previous resea.ch ha. specula.ed on the role of pro- a.d infla.ma.ory immune media.ors in the etiologic process of fa.igue, with contra.ting findings. The prepondera.ce of the evidence supports the role of infla.ma.ory media.ors in the disea.e process of Chronic Fa.igue Syndrome (CFS). The purpose of this study wa. to eva.ua.e the production of interleukin (IL)-8 by periphera. blood mononuclea. cells derived from individua.s with chronic fa.igue. a.seconda.y objective wa. to determine if there wa. a.significa.t rela.ionship between IL-8 production a.d pla.ma.cortisol level. Ma.eria.s a.d Methodology: Da.a.wa. collected from three groups, a.sa.ple of individua.s with CFS (n = 15), a.compa.ison sa.ple of individua.s with fa.igue tha. did not meet criteria.for CFS (n = 30) a.d a.group of puta.ively hea.th norma.ive controls (n = 23). Periphera. blood wa. dra.n a.d pla.ma.sa.ples derived. Periphera. blood mononuclea. cells were stimula.ed with a.mitogenic protocol a.d levels of IL8 in unstimula.ed a.d stimula.ed bulk superna.a.t determined. Results: Both fa.igue groups displa.ed significa.tly higher levels of IL8 tha. the control group. The CFS group demonstra.ed higher levels of IL8 in pla.ma.tha. the fa.igue compa.ison group. Conclusion: The findings demonstra.e a.clea. a.socia.ion between fa.igue a.d IL8. The a.ility to identify a. infla.ma.ory ma.ker in a.socia.ion with fa.igue could provide a.mea.s of identifying those who ma. be a. risk for the development of this disorder.
