A Multi-Constituent Pilot Study Improves Health Behaviors in Underserved Elementary Students

Few successful strategies address lifestyle and behavior change towards food and exercise among underserved *** spend the majority of their day in a school setting,providing an optimal environment to target behavior change with limited *** This school-based pilot study was a collaborative effort among professionals from a state university,a county department of health,a county school system,and a nearby regional public hospital to improve knowledge,intentions,and self-efficacy about nutrition and physical activity among underserved *** Thirty-three,fifth grade students were recruited from a low socioeconomic elementary school(Mean=10.55±0.56 years).Students were randomly assigned to a treatment(n=19),or control group(n=14)for 8 *** per week,the treatment group received 30 min of nutritional advice,and completed 30 min of functional *** and body composition assessments were made,and eating and physical activity behaviors were recorded using the CATCH Kids Club After-School Student Questionnaire at baseline,and at the end of week 8.A 2-way repeated-measure analysis of variance and paired-t tests with Bonferroni adjustments were used to analyze any *** Physical activity,intentions,and knowledge for a healthy nutrition behavior increased significantly in the treatment ***,causal inferences could not be made at this *** This public sector partnership demonstrated that a simple school-based intervention can play a role in healthy choices among underserved children.

Arterial Stiffness as a Cardiovascular Risk Factor in Prostate Cancer Survivors:A Case-Control Study

Purpose In New Zealand,prostate cancer (PCa) is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men and the third most common cause of male cancer *** these patients,the most common non-cancer related cause of death is cardiovascular disease (CVD).Aortic arterial stiffness may be clinically viable solution for detecting and tracking CVD risk factor in PCa *** aim of the study was to determine whether aortic arterial stiffness is increased in PCa survivors compared to age-matched *** Participants recruited for this prospective comparative study were PCa survivors who had completed treatment(other than endocrine therapy) or were on active surveillance compared,or were age-matched non-cancer *** a single 1-h appointment,all participants had measures of aortic arterial stiffness,arterial wave reflection,central blood pressure and body composition *** Ninety-eight men were recruited,51 PCa survivors and 47 *** was no significant between group dif-ference for aortic arterial stiffness[12.0 m/s (SD:1.7) vs.12.0 m/s (SD:1.9),P=0.953,d=0.0].Fat free mass[60.7 kg(SD:4.9) vs.65.1 kg (SD:8.3),P=0.007,d=0.6]and skeletal muscle index[8.6 kg/m2 (SD:0.6) vs.9.0 kg/m2 (SD:0.9),P=0.050,d=0.5]were lower in the PCa *** Aortic arterial stiffness is not increased (worse) in men with PCa who receive various treatments,compared to age-matched *** findings may indicate that factors other than increased aortic arterial stiffness contribute to heightened risk of cardiovascular events in this population.

Advances in spinal cord injury-based research in the last 50 years have resulted in significant improvements to therapy ***,the efficacy of such research could be further enhanced if threats to internal and external validity were *** provide perspective,a sample topic was identified:the effects of acute and chronic exercise on clinical and sub-clinical markers of cardiovascular *** intention was not a systematic review,nor a critique of exercise-based research,but rather a means to generate further ***-one articles were identified,and four common issues were found relating to:(1)sampling;(2)study design;(3)control group;and(4)clinical *** concerns were largely attributed to insufficient resources,and challenges associated with recruiting individuals with spinal cord *** these challenges will be difficult,but some opportunities include:(1)implementing multi-center trials;(2)sampling from subject groups appropriate to the research question;(3)including an appropriate control group;and(4)clearly defining clini-cal *** opportunities are not always feasible,and some easier to implement than ***,addressing these concerns may assist in progressing spinal cord injury-based research,thereby helping to ensure steady advancement of therapy options for persons with spinal cord injury.

Examination of Possible Flow Turbulence during Flow-Mediated Dilation Testing

The validity of the flow-mediated dilation (FMD) test has been doubted due to the lack of normalization to the primary stimulus, shear stress. Shear stress can be calculated using a simplified mathematical model based on Poiseuille’s law. Poiseuille’s law assumes that the blood velocity profile is parabolic. The presence of turbulence will violate this assumption. The Reynolds number (RE) is used to define critical values for the transition from laminar to turbulent flow. Between RE values of 2000 and 4000, flow enters a transitional phase where turbulence is possible. Purpose: To determine whether brachial artery blood flow becomes turbulent during reactive hyperemia following forearm ischemia. Methods: Eleven healthy male subjects (25 ± 5 years) were tested. Brachial artery diameters and blood velocities were measured continuously following 2, 4, 6 and 10 minutes ischemia. The peak post-ischemic RE (REpeak) and RE integrated over 40 seconds (RE40) post-ischemia were calculated. Results: There was a significant change in REpeak (F4,7 = 98.573, p = ≤ 0.001) and RE40) (F4,7) = 50.613, p = ≤ 0.001) in response to ischemia. Within-subjects contrasts revealed a significant increase in REpeak and RE40 for each duration of ischemia versus baseline (p = ≤ 0.001). Following 4 minutes of ischemia there was approximately 12 seconds of potentially turbulent flow. Conclusion: Blood flow transitions between laminar and turbulent flow during ischemia-induced reactive hyperemia. This may limit the efficacy of estimating shear stress when using the standard FMD test protocol.

Optimization of ultrasound assessments of arterial function

Ultrasound technology is widely used to make assessments of arterial function. The delicate nature of these measurements requires that sources of errors are limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess variability due to probe selection and optimization settings. Methods: Ten healthy 20 - 26 year old male and female subjects were tested. Brachial artery size (diameter) was measured thirty times a second using a B-mode Ultrasound unit equipped with a high-resolution video capture device. Distension was calculated using systolic and diastolic diameters. To assess intersession variability, we made recordings over twelve minutes;with the probe being removed and re-positioned every four minutes. To assess variability due to probe selection and optimization, we manipulated four parameters: 1) Probe selection (7 - 13 MHz, 5 - 10 MHz, 6 - 9 MHz). 2) Probe frequency (11 MHZ, 9.6 MHZ, 8 MHz). 3) Measurement location (near, center or middle field). And, 4) Image mode (B-mode, duplex-mode). To assess inter-session variability, three sets of recordings were made for each probe selection and optimization setting. Results: Mean diameter ICC’s for inter-session variability, probe frequency, measurement location, image display size, and probe selection were 0.99, 0.98, 0.97, 0.99, and 0.90 respectively. Distension ICC’s for intersession variability, probe frequency, measurement location, image display size, and probe selection were 0.66, 0.26, 0.62, 0.60, and 0.51 respectively. Conclusions: Altering probe selection increases measurement variability to the greatest extent. However, as long as probe selection and optimization settings are kept constant, our inter-session variability shows that reliable measurements can be made.

Purpose Children require 9-11 h sleep to ensure adequate growth and development by optimizing the efficiency of a number of biological systems,including the cardiovascular *** study aim was to determine whether short sleep duration(leep duration,time spent sedentary,and moderate-vigorous physical activity were measured using wrist actigraphy,and dietary patterns using a food frequency ***-tions between short sleep duration and cfPWV were examined using mixed effects *** There was a positive[unadjusted]association between short sleep duration and cfPWV(β=0.245,95%CI 0.093-0.396).This association persisted following adjustment for demographic factors and was strengthened following adjustment for lifestyle behaviors(β=0.331,95%CI 0.109-0.553).Conclusions Short sleepers(leeping the recommended daily 9-11 *** duration may be important for cardiovascular health independent of other lifestyle behaviors.

Impact of community-based exercise program participation on aerobic capacity in women with and without breast cancer

BACKGROUND Evidence for exercise as an efficacious strategy to improve aerobic capacity of breast cancer survivors(BCS)has come largely from intervention studies conducted in laboratory *** is an increasing need to translate to community-type settings,but the efficacy of those interventions using gold standard evaluation is not *** To investigate whether similar improvement in aerobic capacity(maximal oxygen consumption[VO2])measured with gold standard testing can be achieved through a community-based setting in *** A peak cardiopulmonary exercise test(VO2peak),6-min walk test(6MWT),and timed up and go test(TUG)were assessed pre-and post-16 wk of progressive intensity aerobic and strength training exercise at a community *** The sample consisted of 31 early BCS(<1 year since treatment completion)and 15 controls(CTLs).Both groups significantly improved VO2peak(+1.2 mL/kg/min;P=0.030),6MWT(+35 meters;P<0.001),and TUG(-0.44 s;P<0.01)following *** groups improved peak cycling power during the cardiopulmonary exercise test with BCS improving by+10 watts more than the CTLs(P=0.020).Average exercise attendance was 71%(34 of 48 possible days),but compliant days averaged only 60%of total days for aerobic,and<40%for strength in both *** Community-based exercise programs can be an effective strategy to improve aerobic capacity and physical function for early-stage BCS but potentially not to the same extent observed in laboratory-based randomized controlled *** research is needed to explore barriers and facilitators of exercise engagement in community-based centers to maximize training benefits for adults with cancer.

Detailed characterization of kHz-rate laser-driven fusion at a thin liquid sheet with a neutron detection suite

We present detailed characterization of laser-driven fusion and neutron production(-10^(5)/second) using 8 mJ, 40 fs laser pulses on a thin(<1 μm) D_2O liquid sheet employing a measurement suite. At relativistic intensity(~ 5 × 10^(18)W/cm^(2))and high repetition rate(1 kHz), the system produces deuterium±deuterium(D-D) fusion, allowing for consistent neutron generation. Evidence of D-D fusion neutron production is verified by a measurement suite with three independent detection systems: an EJ-309 organic scintillator with pulse-shape discrimination, a ~3He proportional counter and a set of 36 bubble detectors. Time-of-flight analysis of the scintillator data shows the energy of the produced neutrons to be consistent with 2.45 MeV. Particle-in-cell simulations using the WarpX code support significant neutron production from D-D fusion events in the laser±target interaction region. This high-repetition-rate laser-driven neutron source could provide a low-cost, on-demand test bed for radiation hardening and imaging applications.
